Many people don't care for America. I always liked them. Okay, they do have some clunky songs ("Muskrat Love" and "You Can Do Magic" come to mind) but when they're good, they're very good; just ask Janet Jackson ( ::) )
These were always my favorites (in order by year)
1.Ventura Highway (1973)
2.Tin Man + Miniature Intro (1975)
3.Lonely People (1975)
4.Daisy Jane (1975)

Don't you just love America's odd/quirky lyrics: ;)
"And cause never was
The reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad..."
"Sorry boy, but I`ve
Been hit by purple rain
Aw, come on Joe
You can always change your name
Thanks a lot son, just the same..."
"In the desert, you can remember your name
Cause there ain`t no one
For to give you no pain..."
But their good songs were always good enough that you just ignore it (as I do) or the rest of the song's (or another song's) lyrics made up for it...
;D

I was stuck on the Ventura Freeway last month going nowhere real slow it seemed like forever & ever, wasting lots of gas too. I love that song but don't like the highway/freeway! Yeah, Don't Cross the River is an understated classic.

I'm a black woman who grew up loving all kinds of music; but none more impressionable than "Ventura Highway", "Horse with No Name", and "Tin Man" by America. This was a cross-over group which touch the entire audience, not just white folks. The group "America" show a variety of natural talent, great harmony, and soul as their lyrics set your mind as ease and your heart at peace in a troubled world. This was a group bold enough to name itself "America" and talented enough to have earned that priviledge. If you do nothing else, write nothing else, perform anywhere else; that formula you call "America" will always be remembered and cherished as our masterpiece in history. May your lengency live on!

??? Can anyone tell me the story behind Janet Jackson's use of the "Ventura Highway" music in "Someone to Call My Lover?" When I first heard her song, I was infuriated, partly because "Ventura Highway" was one of my favorite songs. Now, I hate to admit it, but I like her song, too. Surely, she paid a good sum of money for this... Didn't she? By the way, America was great when I saw them back in the mid '90s, and all the songs listed here are great. I'd also like to add "Political Poachers," "Are You There," and "Hideaway" to the list.

I'm not aware of it, but maybe someone here knows or can do some prospecting on the internet and find out the story. I'm curious now myself. Whe i heard them on the PBS special, I was glad they stayed true to their original sound.
