Subject: Deep Purple 1968-1979

I realize "Hush" is from the 60's....and the last two were sung by David Coverdale of Whitesnake fame....anyway, I chose Space Truckin' followed By Hush and Woman From Tokyo....I also would probably be better off not hearing Smoke On The Water to much more though ::)

AAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH Smoke on the water. :( That song makes me CRINGE. We lived next door to a band and that was the ONLY song they knew how to play. It was like I was listening to it 24/7 and they were totally awful. :o Now, I can't listen to that song at all. Also because of that BAD, BAD experience, I never really listened to ANY Deep Purple.

that"s so funny!! i just pointed out to a friend of mine as we watched a commercial for fender guitars during the grammy's or something that the ad was so funny because they showed all these little kids trying to learn that song on their first guitars because, of course, it's the easiest song in the world to play. if that's the only song your band knows, then that is pretty pathetic....but funny!!!!!!

definitely!!! i used to play that in various cover bands and it was always the high point of the night. absolutely cooks from beginning to end. there's an interesting version of it that's played regularly on vh1 classic(what isn't played regularly on vh1 classic - same video's over and over) - it's live in a studio somewhere, and apparently performed previous to recording the album version since the lyrics are alot different (sounds like ian gillian is just making them up on the spot).

Other - 'Black Night'.
I have this on 45, so it's a sentimental fave. :)

Oh, absolutely! I was virtually 'brought up' on this number...
The riff was stolen from The Blues Magoos' 'We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet' (itself a great song...)

Once again I'm with Moo and Paul -" Black Night". A school dance favourite. ;D
I've just bought the Best Of Deep Purple for my son's 11th birthday! He loves "Smoke On The Water" - he also asked for the Best Of Chuck Berry and Blink 182. :D :D

I have seen that commercial and I felt like I was going through a time warp because it sounded a lot like that band. http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-040.gif

Ive got 3 that are my favorites that arent mentioned...
-Kentucky Woman-Who would have thought hard rockers like Purp would remake a Neil Diamond song?
-Lazy-Off Machine Head, a greal duel between Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore
-Knocking at Your Back Door-From the DP Mark II reunion in the mid-80s that actually was one of the highest charting songs

I used to be a big fan of Highway Star and Woman from Tokyo, but I got burned out on both of them... :P
Now I would have to go with Kentucky Woman.
They also did a nice version of "Help" - which shows what a decent band can do with a Beatles song... ;)

take heart, when i was first learning to play guitar ritchie was definitely one of the big influences, among guitar gearheads he's one of the all-time greats.
