Subject: 70's Song, again.

Written By: America on 6/27/2001 at 8:59 p.m.

I need the artist who sings the song "Rings" (Ring, ring, telephone rings). I swear I had a version of that song by Lobo on an old K-Tel LP. I don't believe he did it originally.

It's by a little-known band called Cymarron and the song reached #17 on the charts in 1971. It's a good song...got it myself, in fact! While I will agree with you that the lead singer sounds quite a bit like Lobo, I don't believe he ever did a version of it.

It was originally recorded by Cymarron but Lobo also recorded it in 1974. According to Rhino records, Lobo changed the reference to James Taylor in the original version ("Got James Taylor on the stereo") to Jim Croce in his version. Cymarron's version is on Rhino's "Super Hits of the 70's, Have a Nice Day", volume 17. I think Lobo's version is on his greatest hits, but I'm not positive.

The Lobo version was on my sister's old K-Tel album, "Dynamite". It also included heavily watered down versions of Nazareth's "This Flight Tonight", Stealers' Wheels' "Stuck In the Middle With You" and The Stylistics' "Let's Put It All Together".

I also have the "Dynamite" compilation on K-tel, among many others of that era. Just what exactly do you mean by "heavily watered-down versions" of the various songs???

80smusicfreak: I'm sorry. Wrong choice of words. I meant to say heavily edited. "This Flight Tonight" turned into an under 2 minute song. "Let's Get It All Together" was all but 1 and a half minute on "Dynamite". It also had to have very bland filler songs like "Meet Me At The Corner Down At Joe's Cafe" by Peter Noone.
