Subject: Favorite Harmonizing Bands of the 70s *PIC*
First of all, this is my first post and I'm so glad that I found forum dedicated to an era I'm obsessed with, the 70s.
ANYWAY, I was wondering what some of yalls favorite bands were that have beautiful harmony together. Oh, I know I am going to miss listing some great ones(there were so many in the 70s)so this is why I want to here from everyone.
Here is a list of some great harmonizing bands:
1. Bee Gees: These guys have such beautiful harmony!
2. Hall and Oats: Wow, songs like "she's gone", and "Sara Smile"! Its so amazing how well they sound together!
3. The Doobie Brothers: Speaking of their latter days, Michael McDonald is one of my favorite vocalists.
4. America: Oh wow, I love their music, it's so mellow.
5. The Temptations: Gosh, their early 70s era music is so funky(example: "Papa was a rolling stone")! This along with their great harmonies!
6.Don't you just love ELO's harmony! One song in my head now is "Strange Magic". That lead guitar part at the first of the song, almost puts me in tears!
7. The Eagles: One song I'm thinking of now is "One of these Nights". What a beautiful tune!
I could go on and on, but I wanna hear from yall!

You got some awesome bands listed there. I'll just add to yours:
Seals And Crofts, ABBA, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Toto, Chicago, and a whole bunch of other bands (not quite "harmonious," but excellent nonetheless - I'm thinking of T. Rex, Led Zeppelin, and, the allmighty, Rush).

I liked Paul Davis and England Dan & John Ford Coley, just to name a few.

Wow, TX! I thought I was the only one who still liked some of that mellower stuff. ED&JFC are top-notch! If you really like them, be sure to hunt down LeBlanc & Carr's 1977 album, "Midnight Light" (w/ their huge hit, "Falling"). Bread, Firefall, and Ambrosia are also highly recommended...

TO TEX and 80s music guy. IM NEW TO THIS BOARD TX and failed to see your first message(at the bottom of your first post). I REALLY DIG England Dan and John Ford Coley, my favorite song by them is "Love is the Answer". ALso Paul Davis, my favorites by him are "I go Crazy", and "Cool Nights"(1981). Also mentioned were Ambrosia, and my favorites are what you mentioned(plus "I keep holding on(to yesterday)"(1975). Also, Bread is one of my favorite bands of all time(I loved the tunes you mentioned), plus "Guitar Man", Aubrey, Everything I own(i cant remember if you mentioned that one), plus others. ALso FIrefall is really cool. Thanks for discussing this!

Yes Bread has a ton of good songs, I had to stop somewhere. Those are my favorites from Paul Davis too. My favorite from England Dan/John Ford Coley would have to be "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" this is a GREAT song.
Here are some more good soft songs:
Nilsson - Without You
Charlie Rich - The Most Beautiful Girl
The Stories - Brother Louie
Harry Chapin - Cat's In The Cradle
Nick Gilder - Hot Child In The City
Player - Baby Come Back
Little River Band - Reminiscing
Billy Joel - Piano Man
Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun (I may be alone on this one )
Maybe I'll think of more later.

Agreed. "Nights Are Forever Without You" is my personal fave. Second is a toss-up between "...Tonight" and "Love is the Answer"...
: Here are some more good soft songs:
: Nilsson - Without You
Yep - first-rate! Mariah trashed it!
: Charlie Rich - The Most Beautiful Girl
Okay, but not great. Was never much of a CR fan...
: The Stories - Brother Louie
Another excellent choice. I've met lead singer Ian Lloyd. The original by Hot Chocolate is fantastic as well...
: Harry Chapin - Cat's In The Cradle
Again, okay, but not great...
: Nick Gilder - Hot Child In The City
Yep, loved that song, too...
: Player - Baby Come Back
Liked it about the first 100 times I heard it. This one was played to death in Cali, where I lived at the time. Personally, I prefer their other big hit, "This Time I'm in it for Love"...
: Little River Band - Reminiscing
Always loved LRB. But out of all their hits, this one is actually probably my least favorite. Give me "Man on Your Mind", "The Night Owls", "It's a Long Way There", or even the overplayed "Lonesome Loser"...
: Billy Joel - Piano Man
Pretty good. But since I currently live in his native stomping grounds of "Lawn Guyland, Noo Yawk", I've been on BJ overload for the last 10 years...
: Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun (I may be
: alone on this one )
Nah. A "guilty pleasure" from my childhood as well...
: Maybe I'll think of more later.
Say, I don't think Chicago has been mentioned on this thread yet...

You're right! Chicago needs to be mentioned. I do prefer their 80s music though. Not to say it is better or worse than their 70s music, their 80s music just has more memories attached.
Some of Chicago's 70s music that I like:
"If You Leave Me Now"
"Saturday in the Park"
"Baby What A Big Surprise"
"(I've Been) Searchin' So Long"
"Beginnings"
What about The Eagles. I think they had more good singers in their band then any other, ever. Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Glenn Frey, all had solo hits.
"Take It to the Limit" (this was a roller rink classic)
"Desperado"
"Take It Easy"
"One Of These Nights"
"Best Of My Love"
"Hotel California"
"New Kid In Town"
"I Can't Tell You Why"
"In the City"

I know what you mean. I liked Chicago in the '80s up until Peter Cetera left in '85. 1984's "17" was my favorite album of theirs, and needless to say, I was VERY disappointed when he left the following year! I enjoyed a few of Chicago's post-"17" hits, but they weren't the same, IMO...

All good choices. Frankly, I didn't think they had any bad songs in the '70s, LOL! Personally, I'd add "25 or 6 to 4", "Wishing You Were Here" and "No Tell Lover" to your list...

Randy Meisner, Don Felder, and Timothy B. Schmit all had solo hits as well. Love Meisner's early '80s hits, "Hearts on Fire" and "Never Been in Love", as well as Schmit's 1987 hit, "Boys Night Out"! First-rate...

Having grown up in the band's home turf of California during their entire existence (the mid '90s reunion notwithstanding), frankly, I got rather sick of the Eagles. Yes, most of their hits were great about the first 100 times I heard them. However, if I don't hear "Hotel California" again for the next 10 years, I wouldn't miss it! Although it's actually from the '80s, "I Can't Tell You Why" is probably my personal fave...

"I Can't Tell You Why" was off their 79 album Long Run (which I'm sure you know.) I don't know when the single was released, but it was on the charts the 1st week of Jan. 80. I don't know if it was on the charts in 79 (I don't have them), so I guess it could go either way.

Yeah, their album "The Long Run" came out in '79, but "I Can't Tell You Why" wasn't released as a single until early February, 1980. It was the third single off the album, following "Heartache Tonight", and the title track. (So no, it wasn't on the charts the first week of January, 1980. Also bear in mind that "I Can't Tell You Why" was a featured song in the 1980 movie, "Inside Moves", and included on the soundtrack - which I also have, BTW! So it made sense to promote the single while the movie was out.) It debuted on "Billboard"'s singles chart in the February 23, 1980, issue, and peaked at #8 in the April 19 issue. I was 12 and in the 6th grade at the time, and will forever associate that song w/ that year, as that was just a few months after my family moved from Northern California to SoCal...
In the music biz, a song is considered a hit the year it *peaked* on the charts, not when it debuted. Since the majority of songs that first hit the charts in the months of October, November, or December of any given year actually *peak* on the charts in the month of January or February the following year, they tend to be considered hits of the latter year. So even if "I Can't Tell You Why" had first hit the charts in December of '79, it would still be considered a 1980 hit. There's an excellent book available (which I often refer to when posting on these message boards) that actually categorizes all of the singles that made the pop chart in "Billboard" magazine by year and peak chart position. It's called the "Pop Annual 1955-1999", by Joel Whitburn - it'll set you back $69.95 for the softcover edition or $79.95 for the hardcover, but for an "80smusicfreak" like me, I find it's worth every penny!
