Subject: Badfinger: Behind The Music response

Written By: james martin on 11/7/2000 at 8:57 p.m.

This past Sunday, Vh1 aired probably the saddest, darkest BTM I've ever seen. It's on the 70's group Badfinger. Their story goes from being signed to The Beatles' Apple label to their ex-manager stealing their royalities and leading to depression, and sucicide of lead singer/guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Pete Ham in '75. Then, they tried to continue on; but, after 2 failed albums and a disaster signing contract to a unknown promoter along with series nasty lawsuits with Tom Evans which cause him to take his own life. It's a sad story, but their music lives on. Comments please!!!

It truly is a sad story of unrealised talent.

I've always considered Badfinger to be an indication of what the Beatles would have sounded like if they'd moved into the 70s.
That said, it's there non-Apple albums that I find great - praticularly "Wish you Were Here". The Warner Brothers years also gave us the song "Just a Chance" Superb! I'd argue that these albums are superior to the Apple albums (which I also love)because the band moved away from being Beatle clones and became themselves.
