Subject: A very easy question
A couple of days ago, I heard the last bit of a song with the lyrics:
"I keep forgett'n we're not in love anymore..."
I am positive this is a song by The Doobie Brothers (an awesome band!), but what is the name of this song? (Maybe it isn't TDB, but it sure sounds like them).

Definitely Michael McDonald (solo). Just thought I'd add that less than three months ago, in mid August, I went to see MM live at a local venue. Great show! In addition to "I Keep Forgettin'" and other solo hits, he also performs most of the Doobie Brothers' hits on which he sang lead vocals ("What a Fool Believes", "It Keeps You Runnin'", etc.). Had the pleasure of meeting and chatting w/ him before the show, too, and of course got his autograph while I was at it! Very gracious and down-to-earth guy; he signed and talked w/ everyone who was there. Catch him on tour!

Totally. He's a very good singer - I woke up today to the song "What A Fool Believes"! His voice is easily recognized and I thought he did "I Keep Forgettin" with the Doobies (I have both their "Best Of..." albums and a live double cd set - and that song was not there). I saw the Doobies on TV a couple of months ago during the whole Napster ordeal and they spoke against it (to which I wholly agree with them) and how tracks from their new cd were already available to be downloaded for free (and thousands of people had already done this)....
Most of my favorite songs from the band are sung by Michael McDonald, so this weekend I MUST get his cd! While I'm at it I'll keep an eye out for the Show section of the OC Register to see if anyone's doing a show locally (I was amzed at the amounts of bands, that I had thought defunct, that are still around doing shows - especially at The House Of Blues in Hollywood...).
Thanks for the info.

"I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" was a huge top 10 hit for Michael McDonald here in the U.S. in the Fall of '82. It was off his 1982 solo album, "If That's What it Takes". Fortunately, the album is still in print today on CD here in the U.S...
Other '80s hits of his that you may recall include "Yah Mo B There" (w/ James Ingram), "On My Own" (w/ Patti LaBelle), and of course, "Sweet Freedom", from the soundtrack to the 1986 movie, "Running Scared"...
Since you indicated you were going to purchase his debut solo album, it's worth noting that the Rhino label currently has a Michael McDonald solo hits collection on their upcoming release schedule, to be titled "The Very Best of...". (As you indicated, while there have been Doobie Brothers compilations released here in the U.S., this will be the first-ever collection of MM's solo work.) In fact, it was originally slated to be released on October 17, but I see it's now been pushed back! So keep checking...
In the meantime, there is one import CD of his solo hits available, titled "Sweet Freedom", which came out in Europe back in '86. It's still in print, and not that hard to find in import bins here in the U.S. (or through on-line retailers). It's a little skimpy at just 12 tracks, but it includes all of his hits, including the aforementioned duets w/ Ingram and LaBelle, as well as the odd inclusion of one Doobie Brothers track - "What a Fool Believes"! Excellent sound quality, too. It was the front of this CD booklet that I had him autograph for me when I met him in August. (After 15 years, except for quite a few more gray hairs, the guy still looks exactly the same today, LOL!)
Incidentally, when I caught the show in August, Michael & his band (which includes his long-time wife, Amy Holland, who scored a top 40 hit of her own here in the U.S. in the Fall of '80, "How Do I Survive") performed an 82-minute show, and this was the set list (wrote it all down as the concert went along): "It Keeps You Runnin'" (DB), "Sweet Freedom", "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)", "The Meaning of Love" (BO), "No Love to Be Found" (BO), "Obsession Blues" (BO), "Where Would I Be Now?" (BO), "You Belong to Me" (DB), "Matters of the Heart", unknown solo song(?), "Minute By Minute" (DB), "What a Fool Believes" (DB), "Do Right Woman - Do Right Man" (w/ Phoebe Snow), and "Takin' it to the Streets" (DB). "(DB)" = Doobie Brothers hits; "(BO)" = songs from his new solo album that he's currently on tour promoting, "Blue Obsession". Late in the show, he had '70s singer Phoebe Snow come onstage as a "surprise guest", and as indicated above, they duetted on the 1967 Aretha Franklin classic. I'm happy to report he still sounds as good as ever...
McDonald hasn't reunited w/ the Doobies since the band's original break-up in '83, and I doubt he plans to anytime soon. Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons are the two key (and founding) members keeping the DB's alive today...

Your lucky, I didnt get to meet him or get his autograph when he was here two weeks ago for 2 shows with the local symphony orchestra--it was great though! I have Amy Holland on an old episode of Solid Gold performing that song I think!
He had 3 encores!!
"You Belong to
: Me" (DB),
I love this song and totally forgotten that he co-wrote this with Caryly Simon, who I remember recording this song moreso than the DB. It was a much bigger hit for her than him.
: "Do Right Woman - Do Right Man"

I loved "Poetry Man" by her!

He was a surprise guest with them as recently as a month ago and has said he never left the group officially. He has appeared with them several times a year on tour over the years since 1983.

Until they appeared onstage together at the show that evening, I'd completely forgotten that McDonald & Holland were still married - didn't know that she'd be making an appearance in his backing band, either. I had a front row, aisle seat for the concert, and at one point early on, Amy left the stage for a couple of songs, and came over and sat by the side of the stage less than five feet from me! I actually have her first album (w/ "How Do I Survive") on cassette, and failed to bring it w/ me! Could've gotten that autographed, too. D'oh!

Yeah, I always preferred Carly Simon's hit version of the song, too. (BTW, I've met Carly as well - sweet lady!) But it was the DB's who actually recorded it first, when the song came out on their album, "Livin' on the Fault Line", in the Summer of '77. Carly's version would hit the top 10 here in the U.S. in the Summer of '78. The DB's never released their studio version of "You Belong to Me" as a single back in '77, which is why it was rarely heard on the radio. However, a live version did become a minor hit in the Summer of '83, when released as the single off the band's 1983 live double album, "Farewell Tour" (recorded just as MM was going solo)...

Yeah, that song was okay. Have her s/t debut from 1974 w/ that song on it...

I stand corrected, although I've never heard him say he "never left the group officially." I guess I was thinking more in terms of actually *recording* w/ the DB's, as opposed to making the occasional live guest appearance here and there. But if he were to make some new recordings w/ the band sometime down the road, I certainly wouldn't complain...
