Subject: Stairway to Heaven

I don't want to offend anyone, cause I know it's a really popular song, but could someone please explain to me what's so great about Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven"? It's probably the biggest rock song ever, but I just can't see anything special about it.

I only heard it for the first time about 5 years ago on the radio since the song's quite a bit before my time. I knew how famous it was, so I was listening with a bit of anticipation. I was pretty disappointed when the song finished, however. As far as I could tell, it was just an 8-minute slow song without anything special to distinguish it, except for maybe a spooky, medieval sound that I think is coming from a flute. I've heard it a bunch of times since then, and my opinion hasn't changed too much, although I began to find it had a slightly soothing quality after a while.

I know that musical taste is an entirely subjective thing, but this is like the most legendary song of all time. There must be something I'm missing. And it's not like I've got anything against Led Zeppelin either, or even that particular album. Songs like "Rock n'Roll," "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Black Dog" always get me out of my chair.

I've asked a few people I know are really big Led Zeppelin fans, but the closest thing any of them has given me to an explanation is that "it sounds really good on drugs." So please, would someone tell me just what is so great about "Stairway to Heaven"?
