Please help! I have been trying to describe a song to some of my friends and everyone says i'm nuts or thinks I made it up. The lyrics were something like "My name is Eugene - I stick my hands in fans for fun". Please oh please confirm that this is a real song and who did it if you know. Thanks in advance!!

Somebody already asked about this song - Crazy Joe & The Variable Speed Band from 1978 or 79. Yes, this was a novelty song that did exist. It came out on Casablanca Records as a 45. My local station growing up in Rhode Island, JB-105, played it all the time when it was out.

I must confess, now you've got me *very* curious about this song, Dave! I'm pretty sure I've never heard it, but would love to track down the band's 1981 album that contains "Eugene". (Yeah, I've already found it on the 'net in LP form, as well as both the 7" and 12" vinyl singles, but I'd prefer the cassette. Yep, they were signed to Casablanca, just like you said!)

Incidentally, in your response to the first person who asked about "Eugene" back in May, you claimed that the song failed to crack the U.S. charts. Well, it depends on how you look at it - believe it or not, "Eugene" just barely missed cracking "Billboard"'s "Hot 100" chart in the Winter of '81, "Bubbling Under" as high as #105. So while certainly not a smash, it did a little better than you might have thought (and was actually from the early '80s). Know of any CDs that contain the song (even if they're just V/A comps.)???

If you would like to hear "Eugene," go to the link.

I don't think I've ever heard it either.

Now I know I've never heard that song before, LOL! Not bad, but clearly a "novelty" song all the way. Evidently, its moderate success led to the band recording a follow-up, titled "Eugene Goes to School". Hmmm...
