The song is a critique of what group members Don Henley and Glenn Frey saw as an overindulgent lifestyle undertaken by many California residents in the late 70s.
Useless trivia:
-The line "They stab it with their steely knives" was the group's tribute to Steely Dan, whose work they admired. Steely Dan returned the favor by mentioning the Eagles in one of their songs.
- Henley was infuriated by a letter he once received from a person who misunderstood the lyrics and complained that he had spelled "Benz" wrong in the line "her mind is Tiffany twisted, she got the Mercedes bends."
