Subject: Sugar Daddy Pops (Candy)

Written By: Smith on 6/29/2000 at 6:23 p.m.

Tootsie Roll Industries acquired Sugar Daddy and Sugar Babies from the Warner-Lambert Company in 1993. The Sugar Daddy was originally launched in 1926 by its inventor, Robert Welch, who sold chocolates on the streets of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The candy was first referred to as the "Papa sucker," but was changed to Sugar Daddy in 1932.

Sugar Babies were introduced into the market in 1935, named after the song "Let Me Be Your Sugar Baby," and also stemming off of the success of Sugar Daddy. Currently, both candies are being produced in Tootsie Roll Industries' Cambridge, Massachusetts Plant.
