Subject: Jeremiah was a bullfrog...

Written By: Def Trick on 03/05/04 at 06:16 p.m.

was a good friend of mine.  Never understood a single word he said but I helped him drink his wine.

Anyone have a clue what that's supposed to be about?  Is it just supposed to be nonsensical, or is there actually a reason why he's drinking wine with a bullfrog?  Or is it some sort of slang term that isn't used anymore?   I love that song, but I've always been curious about what it's really trying to say.

Good question. I never really thought about that before.

I know the term "frog" was used for the French but I don't know if bullfrog had the same meaning. But if it was, that would really make sense because if he spoke French-he wouldn't had been able to understand it and we all know about French wine. I could be wrong about this but it is one theory.

"...and he always had some mighty fine wine!"

I always thought that song was an anti-war, pro-hippie kind of ditty.  as in make love, not war -- especially the part where the Three Dog Night sing "if i were the king of the world/tell you what i'd do/i'd throw away the cars, and the bars and wars and make sweet love to you."

but who Jeremiah was (besides being a bullfrog) is a good question!

Joy to the World was written by country music legent
Hoyt Axton.  I never knew growing up it was called "Joy to the World," I always thought it was "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog."
What does it mean?
I tried to link Jeremiah the Bullfrog to Jeremiah the Biblical prophet...but no dice.  Back to the old drawing board.

Couldn't Jeremiah be something else instead of a bullfrog? Why not a cow or a chicken? :D

THe only reason why it is "jeremiah was a bullfrog" is cuz the guy who wrote it was either drunk or on drugs. it is not really supposed to be sensible jsut somethiing someone said while on crack or something lol  :D

Here's the answer, straight from Hoyt Axton, himself:

"Jeremiah was an expedient of the time. I had the chorus (for 'Joy to the World') for three months. I took a drink of wine, leaned on the speaker, and said 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog.' It was meaningless. It was a temporary lyric. Before I could rewrite it, they cut it and it was a hit."

Excerpted from an interview I found at:

Thanks for clearing that up. I never really thought about it before this thread but it really hasn't been keeping me up at night.  ;)

I had never thought about it before, either.  I've been under the weather, today and was bored, so figured I'd run a quick search and see where it took me.  Figures that when I have time to meander a little I'm taken straight to the answer.

Our guesses are always so much more fun and interesting,  aren't they?   I always thought Jeremiah was a short stout guy with a deep voice and a tendency to mumble.  It's rather difficult to picture someone sharing a bottle of wine with an 8 syllable line of cadence as they toast the world, the boys and girls, the fishes and each other.
