Subject: Childhood Medicines

Written By: continental619 on 03/05/04 at 01:55 a.m.

Does anyone have any memories relating to these?

I wish I could identify a gold colored syrup that had a taste I will remember to my death bed.  Does anyone remember such a thing?

This was in the very early 70s, and I was in upstate NY.  Hope to hear from some of you.

My memories of childhood medicine include cherry-flavored cough syrup and those chewable Bayer children's aspirin.

I also remember as a little kid screaming my head off in the doctor's office every time I had to get a shot until one time when I was about 5 or 6 I just made up my mind not to do that anymore.

I remember Coke Syrup...my parents would give this to us for an upset stomach.  I'm guessing it was just the sugary syrup that soda was made from, but no bubbles.  Anyone else ever take this stuff?

Those little orange chewable aspirins from Bayer RULED!
I had to take penicillin for something when I was about five.  It was in a liquid form, P.O., and it tasted terrible.  We got those Sucrets cough drops, too.  They were really cool because, in the '70s, they still came in hinged metal boxes and each tablet was wrapped in foil.  Maybe somebody can find and post a picture of one of those boxes.
Along with film canisters, hippies found Sucrets boxes ideal for stash storage!
The general comfort foods for a febrile kid in our family were ginger ale and saltines.
:)

I remember taking those little orange Bayer aspirin too. They were awesome. I think we probably snuck a few we shouldn't have had, they tasted so much like candy. I also remember mom putting this red stuff on cuts, I think it was called Mercuracrome or something? Anyway, it didn't do anything, I have no idea what it was for, it just made a mess. And Chocks vitamins, they were in the 60's. Don't think they are around anymore.

St. Joseph's were little and orange. :) Edited to ask: Were these made by Bayer?

Vicks Formula 44 and 44D

I also remember seeing Witch Hazel around the house.

No, you're right, it was St. Joseph's.  In fact, St. Joseph's recently ran a TV commercial for their children's aspirin.
I too remember taking spoonfuls of sticky, red Vick's.  There was also Vick's vapor rub, and speaking of vapor, my mom was a big believer in steam vaporizers for our coughs and respiratory problems.
Witch Hazel I remember used for various scratches and bug bites.  We lived in an old farmhouse with a big swamp at the end of the property, so we couldn't help but get nipped in our sleep by a few mosquitos on those muggy summer nights.

Swallow enough Vicks with codeine and you'd feel like you were swimming inside a bottle of Vicks!

LOL!!! ;D

I also remember the Vicks Inhaler. It was this smooth, rounded, plastic, white, finger-sized stick with two small holes on the tip that one would insert in the openings of the nostrils and inhale the Vicks medicine from within. It is my suspicion the Vicks Inhaler contained a cotton strip covered with Vicks Vapor Rub. I carried one around in my pocket when I suffered from stuffiness. :P I remember it worked well. :)
