Subject: Worst movies from the 1970's
Here's what I consider the worst:
3. "Grease"
No offense to fans of the movie, but I can't stand
musicals!
2. "Beyond The Posedian Adventure"
Saw this on tv a few weeks ago, and it was a wreck!
No pun intended.
1. "Night of the Lepus"
Killer rabbits, C'mon! :P Even a five year old wouldn't
be afraid of this movie.

I agree about "Grease," didn't see the other two, but I've heard they were pretty dumb.
One '70s move that was terrible was All The President's Men. The facts that Watergate was the story that brought down Nixon, and Redford and Hoffman were the stars, blinded everyone--critics included--to what a p*ss-poor and booorrring movie ATPM really was!
Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke. Don't get me wrong, there are some funny bits in UIS, but it's nothing more than a sloppily slapped together bunch of scenes.
Death Race 2000
Soylent Green
All That Jazz Bob Fosse's hagiography--of himself! Starring Roy Scheider & Jessica Lange.
Mitchell, a favorite among MST3K fans, but don't let that foool you, it really is terrible!
Roller Boogie
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. George Burns, Aerosmith, The Bee Gees, Billy Preston, and Peter Frampton all in ONE MOVIE? Who could go wrong? These guys.
The Amityville Horror. Perhaps such a bogus story deserved a crummy movie.
The Bad News Bears Go To Japan
Caligula It was actually 1980 by the time this pseudo-pornographic-wannabe gorefest was released. Bob Guccione didn't think the final product was racy enough, so he inserted a bunch of soft-core scenes willy-nilly (no pun intended). Stink-O!
Rocky Horror Picture Show No comment.
:P

"Night of the Lepus" is a classic! ;D Not really, but I like it anyway. 8)
I'll vote for "Psychomania". :P

I might be alone on this, but I think Love Story bites the big one! CHEESY!!!
"Love means never having to say your sorry!" Please.
I did get a good laugh even though I probably shouldn't have.

It was based on Al & Tipper Gore, or so Al claimed. Eric Segal (who wrote the book) did know Al at Harvard, but was equivocal as to how much of an inspiration the Gores were. How much of an inspiration are the Gores for anything? Sheesh!
:P
Subject: Re: Worst movies from the 1970's
Heaven's Gate- the biggest bomb of the 70's!
All the disaster films- Airport77, Earthquake, etc
I like Grease but Grease 2 was really bad.

No you're not alone, can't STAND that film. :P
Some other bad ones...
The Big Bus (stikeroo, I dare anyone to watch this to the end)
Cannonball (I love "car" movies but this is just a "steaming pile")
Viva Kienvel (or anything starring George Hamilton)
The B*tch (or anything starring Joan Collins)
Corvette Summer (proving early on that Mark Hamills acting life was over)
The Fish That Saved Pittsburg ,or Fast Break (or any basketball movie with a member from the cast of Welcome Back Kotter in it)
any movie that has anything even remotely to do with 'rollerskating'. :P

Not to forget the originality for a title of a sappy romance film. ::)
C'mon, atleast "Scary Movie" wasn't titled "Scary Movie Parodies done in this Comedic Horror Spoof". :P

"The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh," what the....? Even I haven't heard of that one.
"Corvette Summer" was a constant late show feature in the early '80s, along with "Chevy Van," and "Car Wash." I kinda liked "Fastbreak," even though it was just Kotter as a basketball coach, and you knew he'd win in the end because the Nevada coach was such a d*ck. Oh, and of course they had to have a gay player on the team and call him "Swish." Yup, it was the '70s. And being the '70s, they had to bring a giant bag of marijuana on the trip....and then try to eat it all when the cops were pulling the over....for a tail light violation or something!
Wasn't "The Big Bus" a political movie of some sort?
???
I LOATHE Joan Collins. I always think of her as "Alexis" on DYNASTY...and I DESPISED DYNASTY. It was emblematic of the Reagan era worship of aristocracy, glitz, and the filthy rich. The "family values" the Reagans really exalted were Carrington family values!
:P

Movies about HEAD TRANSPLANTS...I guess movie studios thought that this was a brilliant idea, because there are two equally stupid but entertaining movies that came out in the 70's...
"The Incredible 2 Headed Transplant" staring Bruce Dern.
"The Thing With Two Heads" starring Ray Milland and Rosie Greer.
If you haven't seen either of these you're missing out! LOL!!
Oh yeah, another classic..."Invasion of the Bee Girls"

Be glad that you never heard of "The Fish that Saved Pittsburg", you're not missing a thing... :P
Corvette Summer was a dissapointment to me, for one, can't believe Mark Hamill as a high school student, and two can't believe anyone would customize a Vette to look as ugly as it did, and three really care about it being stolen... ::)
The Big Bus was some kind of farce/spoof on disaster films of the era (Airport and their ilk). It wasn't funny, we're talking about a two story, three-block long, nuclear powered "bus", that had suites and a bowling alley. Had this been done by the Zucker brothers it may have actually been a funny film but as it is, its just schlock... Let's put it this way, Stockard Channing was in it, just by the laws of 70's films, this meant it was a bow-wow of a movie (don't misunderstand, I always thought Stockard, with those sexy green eyes, was kinda hot, but she always managed to find the worst films to be in).

I looked up The Fish movie, I see why you mentioned it in conjunction with "Fastbreak!"
"Corvette Summer" was directed by the same Matthew Robbins who directed "*Batteries Not Included"!
You gotta love Annie Potts as "Vanessa," a young hussie-in-training, who helps Ken track down his Corvette. Also featured, Danny Bonaduce as "Kootz."
"Car Wash" (1976) is about some dudes who work at a car wash, and the weirdos that that drift in and out of the place. Not exactly a black Repo Man, but close enough. This one's got Richard Pryor and the Pointer Sisters!
"Chevy Van" (1977) is pretty cheesy, but it does have Danny DeVito in it, prior to "Taxi," and just after "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest." The original title was "The Van." Maybe they changed it to "Chevy Van" to coincide with the popular song by Sammy Johns of that title, "We made love in my Chevy van, and that's alright with me..."
:P
Here's something terrible--
The Other Side of the Mountain
Starring Marilyn Hassett and Beau Bridges.
It's the about the Olympic Skier who crashes and gets paralyzed in a skiing race crash.
Theres a lot of screaming and yelling and emotional turmoil and surmounting the staggering odds. It's supposed to be triumph over tragedy, all inspiring-like, but it's just nauseating!
Even worse, Larry Peerce directed "The Other Side of the Mountain II" (1978-), Marilyn Hassett again, but this one with Timothy Bottoms. An excuse for a REALLY sappy love story. Wretch, hurl!
Another movie--by rights I should hate it because it makes me cringe, but I still love it for old time's sake--
Harold and Maude
starring Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort.

I love Car Wash! Picked up the sdtrk when it was re-releaseed back in '97. Car Wash was one of the few movies that the director had played for the actors while they were filming it, so they had a good "feel" for how the tunes and the movie where going to fit together.
When I moved out to Cali, the first place a friend showed me, was a tour of locations of cool movies, he pointed out the Car Wash in West Hollywood location (gone now) with glee!
I've had it on tape for a while now, I know its on DVD but haven't run across it yet.
Harlold & Maude was one of those films that I didn't "get" until I was 16-18 yrs old. By that time, after a lot of screwed up social mishaps in high school, and lot of Smiths tunes under my belt, I started to like the film more. It's a classic to me now...
As far a bad movies are concerned, what about...
1941, this was Speilburgs most well known and expensive flop.
I liked it when I was younger, but it's hard to watch now without wondering what the point of this movie was, and its oh so loonnngg!

Oh, I love 1941! I love it BECAUSE it's just a riotous big mess with no point. It's like Fellini meets the Three Stooges! Many of the gags are well-orchestrated, too. I never get sick of 1941!
The critics loved to trash "Harold and Maude," but I always enjoy it. I'm more a fan of its atmosphere and its comedic aspects. The "inspiring" central message is just too precious and simplistic for me to swallow. Maybe, when I was that age, if I found myself an eccentric 80 year old holocaust survivor for an affair, I might find it credible.
The parts that REALLY make me cringe are the two of them shouting and cavorting in the meadow, and when Ruth Gordon sings Cat Stevens. YEEESH!
Compare Ruth Gordon's role in H&M to her roll in "Rosemary's Baby"!

hey! I'm from Pittsburgh (originally)!
But even I have to admit it's one of the worst films -- not only of the 70s, but of all time! I remember as a little kid hearing radio ads to come down to the Civic Arena to be extras in the film. Not a lot of folks were interested, as I recall.

LOL! You know they're making a cinematic sensation when they're buying radio ads begging for extras!
Peter Jackson used 25,000 extras for "Return of the King," but he didn't invite us to the Civic Center for free hot dogs and punch. :D

Any "disease movie", you know, movies with someone with a fatal illness, and they die at the end and its supposed to make you cry. These were BIG in the 70's, even on tv!
"Ice Castles" comes to mind!
by the way, I am also a fan of Harold and Maude, its just so quirky!
Subject: Re: Worst movies from the 1970's
I saw "Beyond The Posedian Adventure" when it first came out at a drive-in movie theater. It had some well-known actors, but my date and I couldn't make out because we were howling so much. It was a race to the cellar... was the script the worst we'd ever heard, or was it the acting? Sally Fields, fighting for her life in an exploding, lurching hull of a capsized ship, must jump over a gaping chasm of seething death. Her line is something like:"I came in second as a girl scout in the long jump" That was one of the better attempts at character development! A movie looking all the world like it was made by first graders.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!!!
THE WORST!!!
Subject: Re: Worst movies from the 1970's
Some of the worst 1970's movies were post-Jaws ripoffs. After the enormous success of Jaws, it was open season for cheesy movies about gigantic creatures that like to nibble on people:
Grizzly (1976)
This was the worst of the ripoffs. Imagine taking the original Jaws classic, then remaking it scene-for-scene, except for having a big Grizzly instead of the shark, and it's filmed in the woods instead of the beach. They copied Jaws all the way down to a ripoff "cardboard fin" scene. ::) Jaws came out in 1975, and this movie came out in 1976, so there was not alot of time for them to come up with original ideas. :P
Piranha (1978 )
Probably the cheesiest special effects ever. Amazingly they actually filmed a "Piranha 2" a few years later. If I recall correctly, one of them was in 3-D and was so cheesy it was even cool at times. :P
Alligator (1980)
Here's the plot: GIGANTIC flesh-eating creature on the loose in the sewers of Chicago. For most of the movie, nobody believes the protagonist who keeps telling people of the huge creature. Not even the governmental authorities. LOTS of people are munched like hor d'oevres, but in the end the gator gets blown up.
Empire of the Ants (1977)
Gigantic ants take over whole sections of the Everglades. Technically, not a Jaws-ripoff because this movie is based on the H.G. Wells classic "Empire of the Ants" novel. There was another H.G. Wells movie of the same ilk in 1976, "Food of the Gods".
