Subject: Lunchboxes

Written By: eightiesfan on 03/01/04 at 06:23 a.m.

To the best of my recollection, my first lunchbox was a Peanuts one, then I had one of those plain yellow cloth ones. After I got to the 5th grade I just started brown-bagging it.

I just bid on a Partridge Family lunchbox over on ebay and now I have to wait about 6 more days to see if someone outbids me; just have to keep my fingers crossed! :)

We used to have so many lunch boxes. I think I did have the Partridge Family one (or one of my sisters did).

I found this site which has a bunch of lunch boxes.

I don't know if they sell them or not. But, it was fun looking at all of them.

Lunchboxes I can remember having off the top of my head:

KISS
Evel Knievel
Happy Days
Superman

I had quite a few, as I couldn't stand the food served at school.

Scooby Doo
Speed Bugy (rare)
Superfriends
Fat Albert (rare)

I went through probably two a year, most due to my own fault.  I'd leave something in there that you shouldn't, like part of an egg-salad sandwich or something in it, and the lunchbox in the sun at the playground.
I can remember the smell now, it's NOT a good smell, and that smell NEVER comes out of the lunchbox, no matter how many times you wash it. :P
My mom would just get me a new one... ;)

Oh, I remember that dirty lunchbox odor, oh-ho-ho nnnnasty!
Dairy products and lunchboxes, a recipe for trouble!
I had...hmmm...
U.S. Mail (it looked like a mailbox, ultra-dorky)
The Six Million Dollar Man, and I can't remember what else.  No matter, my lunchboxing days were prior to the '80s.

Me too.  I discovered I liked brown-bagging better by 4th grade, so my mom started buying those packets of lunch-bag sized paper bags.  In retrospect, I should have been more grateful that my mom, as a thrifty sort, didn't send me to school with my lunch in a giant grocery bag, like some other kids.
Anyway, after a certain age, carrying a lunchbox became a GIANT social liability.  Then, in college, carrying a lunchbox was kitschy and cool!
Go to any university campus and you'll find the students who go Nerd to the Max.  Big Coke-bottle glasses with tape on the frames, plaid pants with a checked shirt that has a pocket protector, and so on.  We had one who looked exactly like Poindexter from ROTN.  I wanted to go up to him and say, "nice work!," but never got the opportunity.

I think we had one of those, too. LIke I said earlier, I can't remember what I had and my sisters had. It all kinds of runs together now.

Wow, lucky you!  I'd liked to have had that one.  I had several different lunchboxes:

Road Runner and Coyote
Hong Kong Phooey
Space 1999
Star Wars (I think everyone had one by '76)
Scooby Doo
6 Million Dollar Man

..there were a couple more I just can't think of right now.  For some reason I think I may have had "The Black Hole".

Well, I didn't get that Partridge Family lunchbox I bid on last week; somebody outbid me by $1!  :'(

I'm not giving up though, I'll see if there are any other places on the internet that might have it for sale.

There was a article in one of the major local newspapers here yesterday, about the old metal lunchboxes.  Found the same article on the internet:

I did it! I finally got my hands on a 1971 Partridge Family lunch box that I bid on at EBay - this one even comes with a Partridge Family Thermos. I won't be using it to cart my lunch to work in though; it will go on display on my coffee table next to my lava lamp.  :D ;D

I just thought of something else - this lunchbox and I are the same age as I was born in '71.

My mom bought me a metal “Gruesomes” lunchbox when I was in kindergarten. For anyone who doesn’t know who the Gruesomes are, they were the Aadams-like family with mod haircuts from the Flintstones. I LOVED that lunchbox but only had it for about a week because someone stole it from the cloakroom. I have not seen another like it since then but I would love to find one. :-[
