Subject: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
Any of you out there remember any of the discos especially in NYC and surrounding areas? I went to many and sat on those bar stools waiting for Mr. Right, then shaking my booty on the dance floor. Loved the music, the era, and the craziness of it all. Sounds like many of you on this message board were still very young in the 70's....guess I am getting old LOL! ::)
Subject: Re: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
Stop it with the "getting old" stuff. :P We're all young forever! :D
Disco and Discotheques ruled! It's really great to see someone who appreciates this aspect of the 70's. :)
Did you make it into Studio 54 and The Palladium?
Subject: Re: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
:D 8) Wow! Thanks for saying that, I do feel about 25 yrs old and still dance like a disco lady LOL! I did get into Studio 54 2X's with a friend who knew Steve...don't remember the Palladium though! Hit 2001 in Brooklyn, that is where Saturday night fever was shot (just outside) inside was much smaller than shown in Movie...Miss all the craziness of it all, but still feel the same when I hear Disco music....

Oh my! The memories. I still "kick it" when I hear Disco. 8)
Anyway, I think the Palladium may have been 80's. Darn fog! :P LOL!! ;D
Do you like Disco that was within the clubs and not necessarily in the American Top 40? Heck, familiar with EuroDisco? ;D
Subject: Re: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
Hey,I'm sorry to say but we can't stay young forever unless you want to be like Michael Jackson living in a hyperbaric chamber. ;D

I used to go to a few local places. The big one was the roller skating rink (always had disco music on-if you can count that). But, it wasn't something I did ALL THE TIME.
I did go to one when I was in Greece. What kind of bothered me about that was they would only play a part of a song before switching to the next song. As we were standing outside of the discotheque waiting for our ride, some guy on a moped was hit by a car. They put the guy in the back of a car and took him to the hospital (didn't bother waiting for an ambulance). And then (I am NOT making this up) the discotheque started playing the song "Another Bites the Dust." I was in shock when I heard that. I'm sure it was just a coincidence because I'm sure there was no way that the person who was playing the music knew what was going on outside.

Can't help remembering that fog!!! I always had to bring a curling iron and hair spray in a huge bag to lug around so that I always tried to look great...now thinking back on it, I wondered why I tried so hard when those guys really weren't looking at my hair anyway, especially with those danskin skirts that always showed leg when spinning around or doing the freak...Haha!!!!

Ooh, you mean like "Moon-Boots" by ORS (Fall of '77), "Romeo & Juliet" by Alec R. Costandinos (Spring of '78 ), or "The Ring" by Savage Lover (Summer of '79)? ;-)
"Ahh, let's do it/Let's dance/Let's dance across the floor..." :-)

Hey, did anybody see VH-1's special When Disco Ruled The World last Saturday? It was very interesting! Lots of images of Studio 54 and other clubs that were hip back then. 8)
If only I'd been 10 years older.... ;D

Wow! :D I'd just played the "Romeo & Juliet" 12" a couple of nights ago. :o It's a coincidence you picked that one as one of your examples.
Would you want to name some others? ;D
It's nice to see someone else naming off tunes I like but many don't remember.

I always preferred the underground or EuroDisco songs and not so much the familiar Top-40 crap. For example, a true Disco Head never really liked the BeeGees or KC, etc. In fact, most clubs I went to wouldn't dare play even Donna Summer!
We were more into songs like this (not sure of exact titles):
Is It All Over My Face?
Deputy of Love
Infatuation
The Devil's Gun
Do What You Wanna Do (Be the Judge & the Jury Too)
Get on up and Do it Again (You Can Do It One More Time)
I Like What You're Doing To Me
Your Place or Mine
Soul Makossa
Keep On Jumpin'
Dancer (Let You're Body Free, Now)
Is It In?
Spank
In Central Park After Dark
Got Me Jumpin', Got Me Stumpin'
Let's Do It
Let's Start the Dance
I loved going into Midtown NYC to get my 12" singles at "Downstairs Records" which sold mosty underground tunes.

"Downstairs Records" ? ! :o :o
Wow!! What memories! :D The last time I was in there was 1985. I wonder if they're even around anymore. ???
As far as your listed tunes, my fave off of that list is "I Like What You're Doing To Me", but I prefer the "mostly instrumental" version. 8)
I will add that I very much like Donna Summer's hits, The Bee Gees and KC and the Sunshine Band and I considered (and still do) myself a pretty big Disco fan.
I just don't believe in labels like "Disco Head", whether true or fake. ;)
Subject: Re: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
Disco was a fun era! ;D
Anyone remember what we wore!
Many of those styles have come back!
Platform shoes
Early 70's- Bell bottom hip hugger pants
Thick belts
70's jewelry
Subject: Re: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
I loved dressing up disco style in the 70's. I made sure I had the body suit (danskin) low cut...along with the danskin skirt that always flung open while doing the hustle or some other dance and showed leg, also, I remember I had these tight velvet pants and a blouse that was so flowy but very femine, of course had to have the high heels to match....oh, those were the days. I still don't know how i danced for hours in those shoes LOL!!!!! Lots of the clothes especially empire dresses with wild prints are coming back. Even if I saved the clothes they would have never fit now..... :o :D
Subject: Re: Baby Boomers who were into the Disco Scene
Very few people if any remember, liked or even heard of the album "Evita Festival '79", Joe Bataan's tune "Rap-O-Clap-O", the groups "The Rice & Beans Orchestra", "El Coco", "Poussez" or Amant's tune "If There's Love". I'd be pretty happy if someone else had not only heard of these, but liked them as well. 8)

I've lived in the city for the past 16 years and haven't run across it, so it's doubtful... But where in midtown were they located, Hairspray? I live in the midtown area...i could do some investigating if you want. ;D
One of my favorite disco songs is "Cherchez la femme..."
But I was a bit too young to ever go disco dancing. When I got here in 87, the Palladium was still going strong as a nightclub, but it had a different kind of music beat. Sadly, a few years ago it was turned into a giant NYU dorm (called "Palladium Hall")!

Downstairs Records was on the northern side of 43th Street between 5th and 6th Ave. It was right next to a Fire Station. You actually had to go "upstairs" (go figure the name).
I have not been there since the late '80s. I have no interest anymore in getting those rare 12" singles. I'm happy with my collection from back in the day. My kids and their friends all think the songs from my collection are new anyway. Little do they know the dates on them!
