Subject: Benny Hill

Any Benny Hill fans here? That show rules! I didn't care too much for when he just stood there & did his poetry/singing/whatever it was, but I loved the skits he had, & of course...the dancers!   :D

I remember watching some episodes of his show with my parents when I was a kid.  Now (many years later), I find it too slapstick.

Yeap, yeap! That was definitely a show to which I looked forward.

A bit of trivia:

Frazier's "Daphne" (Jane Leeves) was a "Hill's Angel" (1983-1984).

"Yes, It's the Benny 'ill show". I used to watch it all the time. I loved "Little Jackie" the short, older guy who Benny used to slap on the head all the time. That poor guy. I'm surprised he didn't get a concussion.

LOL! Yeah, I felt sorry for him too. I remember asking my parents "why does Benny always do that to him?".  8)

I always liked "Benny Hill."  Can you believe some American parents wouldn't let their kids watch it when it came over here?  Really!  I had friends whose mothers thought Benny Hill was too racy.

It was considered to racy by my mom too, I had to sneak downstairs in the dark to watch it Sunday nights at 11:30pm, thats the only time it was shown in Baltimore. ;)
BTW, what was the name of the tune/song with the heavy sax they used at the ending fast-motion chase scene at the end of every Benny Hill? Been looking for a copy of that for a while...

Mah Na’ Mah Na’  - Piero Umiliani

This legendary track was used on The Benny Hill Show, and was covered by a wide array of artists, including the disco creation Lipstique, and The Muppets

You can find more info, & links on it (you'll see it about ¾ down the page) at this link:

Yes, but that's not the one with the big sax riff in it.  I could do a Google search for it, but my interest is just not aroused.  Speaking of, I've read the unlikely history behind Umiliani's "Mah Na Ma Na," the long and short of it being its origins as a theme for a '70s skin flick.

It was an adaptation of Boots Randolph's 'Yakety Sax' which used to close the show (the fast chase sequence at the end, normally)

You're quite right about 'Mah Na Mah Na' - it was used in the soft-porn flick 'Sweden Heaven And Hell' (1969)...and before you ask, no - I haven't seen it!

Back to Benny - he was immensely popular up until the late 1980's when his act was deemed too 'politically incorrect'. A big reshuffle at the TV company that used to make it led to the show being axed around 1990, and poor Benny never really got over this setback.

He died, largely forgotten by the industry in 1992.

Yeah what a great show with a great piece of music at the end (Yakketty Sax). It had a kind of cheeky seaside postcard humour that was difficult to resist.

His only problem was that awful accent. Was he from the south of England somewhere, Paul UK? It sounds like a cornish accent to me.

Still, great programme. His assistants made me laugh. One was called Henry Magee but I forgotten who the other one was called.

I used to stay up late to watch it as a teen in 1984.  It came on right after SCTV.  I used to hope there would be an uncensored version of The BH Show.  ;)

On a side note, I remember seeing Benny Hill in an old Disney movie.  I got a chuckle out of that.  :D

Benny Hill was in the original "Italian Job" movie with Michael Cane, he played a electronics whiz who had a penchant for older women with big rear ends ;D.

I can't imagine "Yakety Sax" (1963), was not inspired by The Coasters' "Yakety Yak (Mike Stoller) (1958)

Whereas performance artist Karen Finley's act of rolling nude in chocolate syrup and cramming canned yams into bodily orifices was very politically correct.  Funny old world.

Ha ha! No probs. Have you heard the B Side called Tingalingaloo? It goes a little like this . . .

"Now If you're feeling miserable
If you're feeling Blue
This little ditty will help to pull you through
All the clouds will dissapear and the grey skys turn to blue
Just stick your finger in your ear and go Tingalingaloo . . ."

They don't make 'em like that anymore.  ;D

Which is probably just as well!

Well spotted with the accent, Bobby - yes, indeed he was from the south of the country...Southampton, to be precise - born there in 1924...

More anoraking - his 'theme' song, 'Ernie', was loosely based around a minor US hit, 'The Ballad Of Irving' by Frank Gallop...

Heh! Not sure where you'd go to see 'Sweden H&H' these days Maxwell...but it does have almost legendary status among collectors of soundtrack LP's - a good vinyl copy on the US Ariel label will set you back around US$125...!

Mind you, Karen Finley's act does sound interesting...!

Heh heh! Tingalingaloo appeared amongst the glut of novelty records that occurred in the 70s/very early 80s. I suppose these type of records are like what Mr Blobby was in the 90s (one of the most horrendous Christmas songs ever!) and Bob the Builder's 'Can we fix it?' later on. It shows that as things change in the pop business, things stay the same - well in principle anyway.   ;D

Thanks very much for your facts, Paul. They are always welcome.  :)

The name of that tune is "Yakkety Sax" that they used to play at the end of every show; I loved Benny Hill's show too and I actually own several tapes of his shows. I think he's even funnier than a lot of the comics out there today.
