Subject: "Disco Duck". Who remembers this song?

Written By: Steve_B. on 02/11/04 at 06:55 p.m.

I remember rushing to the record store when I was 8 years old,and buying a 45 rpm vinyl record of this song. Little did I know that Rick Dees, the guy who sang the song, was actually making fun of the disco genre, when he recorded it. I think its success even surprised him. I remember reading somewhere he was a disc jockey at some radio station, and actually got fired for plugging, and playing his own song.  :-/ Who remembers the "Disco Duck" song? Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Yes, I remember it and I had the 45, too. I didn't know Dees was making fun of disco, though. The song was also in Saturday Night Fever, but it wasn't on the soundtrack.

How can you PARODY the Village People?  ;) Come on!  I thought "Nacho Man" was a clever ad campaign for...I can't remember what.

I grew up right outside of Memphis where Rick Dees was the DJ, so I heard the song quite frequently!

Thank's 80's lady. It's good to know Rick Dees is still in the music industry. He must be a pride-inducing,local celebrity to the people who live in Memphis, sort of a "local boy makes good." One thing I always wondered was if he did BOTH voices for the song, the "normal human guy",and the voice of "The Duck"?  ??? Does anybody know? Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

You mean the song once voted as one of the worst disco songs of the disco era. Yes, I think I even have a 45 rpm copy of it someplace. Actually, this is one of the few disco songs I actually liked.

I must have a liking for bad disco music. Other songs voted as  the worst disco songs of the disco era are "The Hustle" by Van McCoy and "In the Navy" by the Village People. Both of which I actually liked.

I LIKED Disco Duck, mostly because I played it until it drove my parents up a wall  ;D!
BTW Rick Dees just got canned from KIIS FM 102.7 here in LA after many years on the air as the morning DJ. He (and some of his listeners) are not happy about it.
Seems his contract wasn't offered for renewal, there was a minor stink about the circumstances, made the local news here in so Cali...

Oh my! What a little sadist!  I can just imagine your father's blood pressure escalating by the minute.  One time I heard my dad yell at my sister, "If you want to listen to Grace Slick scream her lungs out, WILL YOU PLEASE USE THE HEADPHONES!"

No job security for Rick Dees?  What does that say for the rest of us?  :o

I LOVE "In the Navy" - but then I love VP all around.  Hustle was OK, but went on too long.

Though I wasn't alive in the 70s, I got into retro 70s music in the mid 90s when I was 13 and loved the 70s since. Anyways definitely heard this song and loved it.

I had no idea Rick was taking the piss out of disco music, but nonetheless it's a great song and funny too. I love the drumbeat and funky bassline to this song, it goes off well! I've got the Top Of The Pops clip of this song which is the TOTP dancers (known as "Ruby Flipper" that year) and the clip was piss funny cos some of the people were wearing the dopiest duck costumes I've ever seen and were waddling through the studio in a real dopy way, what a cack :D!!!

Anyways I'm a big disco and funk fan whom listens to disco and funk of the 70s of all sorts especially the really hard to find disco songs that most people never heard of, funk45.com is a fantastic place to listen to samples of the rarest funk records on earth ;D! Also into rock, glam and metal of 70s too.

i remember the song and yes, it was a suprise hit. More of a suprise that Rick Dees had a talk show opposite The Tonight Show which I enjoyed. I remember he had Bobby Hatfield (of the Righteous Bros) on shortly after the "Unchained Medly" reappeared in the charts due to "Ghost"
