Subject: Fish
Would anybody have any information on the old 70's sitcom FISH? I remember when the 70's had good shows like The Jeffersons,Maude,Odd Couple,All In The Family,Different Strokes,etc.. Even though I wasn't around to see them until some of them came to Nickelodeon many years back. So,when did Fish begin and last air? Thanks! ;D

Fish was on for only one season on ABC from 77-78. It was, as you know, a spin off of Barney Miller.
Fish was to have retired from police work to help his wife raise adopted/orphan/foster kids.
It was kinda of funny, but Fish's old sad sack schtick really worked better off of the other Barney Miller characters, the cute street-wise kids seemed to steal his thunder, so to speak.
It was mostly a one-trick pony and got tired pretty quick.
The only other thing I can remember is Todd Bridges of (wha' cha talkin bout Willis) Different Strokes was on this show proir to being Willis.
Subject: Re: Fish
Ohh yeah, Fish, with Abe Vigoda! Todd Bridges was "Loomis." The program also had Barry Gordon, as Charlie Harrison. Gordon was in the classic A Thousand Clowns with Jason Robards. Later he played Gary Rabinowitz, a young lawyer, on Archie Bunker's Place, a new "Meathead" for cousin Billie's "Gloria" character substitute. Gordon was president of the Screen Actors Guild, 1988-1995.

"Sanfor & Son" is one of my all time favorite! It's the anti-Cosby. I loved it because it took place in a junkyard and it wasn't all slick and glamorous. The best bits are the ones with Aunt Esther. "Back to yo' cave, bat!" "Watch it, sucka!" Redd Foxx played his character with a child-like charm. He and his dopey friends were always scheming, and LaMont, acting more like the parent of a child than an adult son, was always out to thwart them.
There were times when Redd Foxx was in contract disputes and wasn't on the show. They'd have him go to St. Louis, and write in Whitman Mayo's "Grady" character. Fred was preferable, but Grady had his own special charm (like Shemp in lieu of Curly). 8)

I would've liked to see Sanford and Son if it had lasted well into the middle 1980's but the show's ratings flopped big time and so everyone's tastes went towards St.Elsewhere,Knots Landing,Crest,etc...Sanford went on to produce his own comedy act and as for Demond Wilson he runs his own ministry for inmates.

Two things I remember about Sanford & Son.
1) Redd Foxx clutching his chest saying, "I'm coming Elizabeth."
2) Grady opening the door to Ester and saying, "Oh hi, Lester." She says, "That's Ester, No 'L'". He says, "Well, Merry Christmas to you too."

Yeah, the show sputtered on as Sanford for a few seasons after Demond Wilson left, but it didn't work. Where's a comic without his straightman? Wasn't there a "Grady" spin-off or something? The Grady Bunch? Demond Wilson later appeared on the (thankfully) short-lived New Odd Couple, then quit show biz to become a Baptist minister (oh, Howard already said that). Redd Foxx appeared on the terribleRedd Foxx Show in 1984, after a few years of drinking in Vegas hotels and hiding from the IRS. Foxx died while shooting an episode of the new show, you'll never guess how! ;)

I remember watching Fish as a kid with my Dad. Along with Sandford and Son. It was great. I also remember watching On The Bus and In Search Of, That's Hollywood, etc.. but I digress.
Hmm... imagine getting Eric Estrada and Abe Vigoda together in some crime fighting show. Would it be called: "Fish & CHiPs"? ;D ;D

Very witty, Wilde, very very witty! I wish I had thought of that! :D

Yes,Maxwell. Grady had his own spinoff, and he did have his own charm. Redd Foxx was a genius, but if you watch too many of the "Fred and Lamont" episodes, his character does get old after a while. It is refreshing to watch a "Grady and Lamont" episode once in a while. By the way,you can download the "Sanford and Son" theme, and watch a video clip of the intro to "Grady" on this website. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ What I thought was a bad idea was the "Sanford" spinoff of the early 1980's. Demond "Lamont" Wilson did not want any part of it. So they said Lamont got a new job in a different state, and moved away. There were no familiar neighbor characters except Rollo, and he actually became Fred's business partner. This would have been unthinkable in the early "Sanford and Son" episodes. Wow! All of us watched a ton of tv in our younger days. LOL! Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Redd Foxx died of a heart attack on the set of his last sitcom "The Royal Family" in 1991. His co-stars thought he was doing his old "I'm Coming to Join You,Elizabeth" routine and started laughing at him. When he collapsed on the floor, and never came back up,they realized it was the "real deal". Redd Foxx R.I.P. Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Oh, right, it wasn't "The Redd Foxx Show," it was "The Royal Family." I forgot about that one.
I never saw either the "Grady" or "Sanford" spinoffs. Whitman Mayo died just a couple of years ago. I'll bet they brought Rollo in on "Sanford" so the lazy writers could carry on with the "big dummy" routine. Did you know the actress who played Esther used to be a stripper in St. Louis?
BTW, the theme from "Sanford and Son" was written by Quincy Jones, its actual title is "The Streetbeater."
Subject: Re: Fish
Redd was a retired mailman, and Della Reese played his wife in "The Royal Family". She was also in some of the final "Sanford and Son" episodes as well. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101187/

If they had a Sanford and Son movie, Who Would be the best actor to portray Fred Sanford? ;D
Howard
Subject: Re: Fish
How interesting a question is that?
Hmm, the only person I know of that could actually pull off his schtick as Fred Sanford, is Eddie Murphy.
Eddie Murphy was an admirer of Foxx, was a close friend of Foxx, (helped bail him out of his IRS debt) & was in Harlem Nights with him.
Eddie is pretty good with character roles, i.e. "Coming To America & Nutty Professor"...with some good makeup, I'm sure he could pull it off.
