Subject: Superfly Dies: Ron O'Neal Dies At 66
Written By: gumbypiz on 01/17/04 at 01:53 p.m.
Ron O'Neal, best known for his role of Priest in the 1972 blaxploitation film Superfly dies at 66.
Superfly is one of my favorite films of the 70's, and after Shaft and Sweet Sweetbacks Bada*s Song, one of the most inportant of the blaxplotiation films.
His role as Superfly was an icon of the 70's and some of the trends in soul, rap & hip-hop music culture begin with this movie.
Ron's acting, with the style, action, & music of Superfly was and still is an great influence in film and black culture.
The music from Curtis Mayfields sdtrk are still sampled to this day.
Ironic is the fact that after many years of wrestling with Warner Bros, the DVD version of Superfly was just released Jan 13.
Ron O'Neal died of pancreatic cancer Jan 14 at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles.
Rest easy, Ron, we will miss you..
