Subject: Mulligan's Stew

Written By: gumbypiz on 01/04/04 at 04:00 p.m.

You'd have to been in grade school in the mid-late 70's for this..
Does anyone remember this PBS/CTW(?) show about nutritional eating? Our teachers forced us about twice a month to watch this..very painful to watch as it was really outdated even though looked like it was only made in early 70's-late 60's.
It was about some kids, who were also in a band, "Mulligan's Stew", that sung really BAD tunes teaching good nutrition (y'know 4-4-3-2).
It had about 5 kids and one adult (not in the band). None of the actors were known for anything I can remember..except I could swear one of them was in the Partrige Family (not Susan Dey).
Can't find any info on the show on the net. Dying to get a vid or soundtrack from it. Can't get some of the songs out of my mind..."Bad food and fad diets, are bad for you so don't try it.."
Any help..?

It rings a bell. Not sure if I'm remembering something else like it.  I do remember all the campy ads for the dairy council and the Ad Council.  Especially, "Hi, I'm from Mars and eat lots of candy bars!  But what is this....?"

Mulligan Stew was what the hobos ate, it contained
"anything that walks or crawls!"

I remember this show!  We had to watch it in school, too.  I just remember the clothes looked like clothes the Brady Bunch would reject.

I remember Mulligan's Stew. I was probably in the first or second grade.  I liked it though.  I'm sure that if I was older I probably wouldn't have liked it so much!   :)

I used to have a Mulligan's Stew album.  How queer was I? ::)

I don't know what happened to it.  Have you checked PBS site?

So? We had an Arthur Godfrey album of patriotic songs for children (with children's chorus), an record made by Miss Jean of "Romper Room" (something about manners and etiquette), HR Puffenstuff, featuring Mama Cass, just to mention a few.

Just to let you know, the PBS site hasn't anything on Mulligans Stew, but they did actually sell copies of the show on VHS some time ago..missed a bid on it on e-bay too.
I found this out from the moderator of "Jump the Shark".com as he is adding the show to the JTS list (soon).
He's still doing some background on the show and will let me know any more info on it.
By the by, I would pay much $$ for the Mulligans Stew, Romper Room (did she ever look through the mirror and say your name?), & HR Puffn'Stuff albums if you ever want to sell! ;D

Oh the memories!

This was a PBS Educational series from 1977.  I remember them giving us an "Educational Comic Book" based on the series in grade school!

The series was much in the vein of Electric Company and the like, combining catchy songs and stories, in a way to make trick kids into learning.  The funy thing is, over 30 years later, and I can still remember parts of the song!

4-4-3-2, that's the formula for me and you!
2-4-6-8, hurry up now, don't be late!

I decided to look on E-bay, and sure enough...  somebody is selling tapes of this series!

I'd sell 'em if I had 'em, but they vanished with the rest of my childhood.  I often think back on individual toys and possessions I had as a kid, and wonder exactly when they disappeared and where they went.  That's why Puffn'Stuff and Captain Kangaroo records are so valuable.  We never gave them a second thought as we careened into adolescence.  They ended up rotting in some attic or sold for pennies at a tag sale.
If I had only kept all my Star Wars toys in their factory packages and hermetically sealed, I could now pay off all my debts!! ;)
