Subject: "Me & My RC" commercials
:-*
Hey everybody! I used to LOVE singing along to those 1970s commericals from RC Cola: "Me & My RC". I haven't heard them on TV in many, many years. I actually remember all the words to one of their ads! A geeky young man was trying to reunite with his old girlfriend, Mary Lou, but she lived many miles away. So he hitchiked to get to her, then they both enjoyed a glass bottle of RC cola (yes, soda was sold in those tall skinny glass botltes back then--I miss them too...pop just doesn't taste the same in cans or plastic bottles). Anyway, for those of you who remember the jingle, here are the words to that one ad I remember:
"Rode forty miles with some chickens in he back of a pick-up truck,
Rode with a man who smoked cigars and charged me half a buck.
Most folks thought I was crazy with nothin' much to do,
But they'd-a hitched a ride with both hands tied if they knew my Mary Lou.
Me and my RC, Me and my RC.
'Cause what's good enough for other folks
Ain't good enough for
Me and my RC...."
I love those ads! Anyone else have good memories about those commercials or about the tall 16 oz. glass bottles? Interestingly enough, I took a trip to Mexico five years ago, and they do NOT have cans....all their soda machines dispense the tall glass bottles like the U.S. had in the '70s! And today's fast-paced commercials drive me nuts, they are very hard to watch because the scene changes every half-second and very loud music, too.

I have a misheard lyric on that one. I've been debating whether or not to submit it. I might as well do that now.

I LOVED RC! I remember drinking in quite a bit when I was about 11. Shortly thereafter they stopped distributing it in my region, and now it's hard as hell to find here in the northeast.

For me, RC is an odd tasting drink. The initial guzzle is delicious, but about halfway through the bottle, gets kind of a strong, strange flavor. Have to work hard to finish a whole RC. Moon pies and RCs go hand in hand and assist each other in the effort to ingest both foods.

Don't know about RC, but Coke still sells their famous cola formula in glass bottles here in the States, not just in cans and plastic bottles. In fact, our local BJ's Wholesale Club sells the glass bottles of Coke by the casefull! They aren't in 16-oz. bottles, though - they're only about 10 or 12 ozs. each. So if you don't mind the smaller size, you needn't travel south of the border! :-)

Just last month, I was shopping at our local K-mart, when I got to the soda aisle, and saw that they had cases of RC (in cans) on the shelf. It happened to be on sale at the time, too, and since I hadn't tried the stuff since the '80s, I figured what the heck, and bought a case. It's now long gone, so needless to say, I thought it was pretty good. :-) I, too, live in the Northeast, and while I admit I haven't seen RC anywhere else lately, K-marts are anything but scarce in this region, so give 'em a try... ;-)

This string brought back a lot of memories.
I love RC, and actually used to go out of my way at the local Mall to get my food in one stall, then to another just so I could get my RC. I still drink it on occasion, but not as often as I used to (weight reasons). ANd if you ever go to Mexico, that is the best RC. They still make it there with sugar, not corn suryp like they do up here in the US. If you don't find Royal Crown, try looking for Diet-Rite. That is the diet form of RC.
For those that remember Meathead from "All In The Family", he was a loyal RC drinker also. Once Gloria and her mom made a bet that he could not pick RC from a choice of 3 glasses. He correctly Identified the Coke, Pepsi, then the RC, then walked away, leaving them puzzled as to how he did it.
This bit is more 90's, but it is RC. In 1995 or so, they made "RC Draft" for about a year. It was draft soda (like ROot Beer or Creme Soda), and came in a dark brown bottle (no cans). I remember going to Wall-Mart and buying 10 CASES at $1 a 6-pack when they were closing it out. My fiancee and I drank it like crazy until it was gone. I still miss it.

If you can't get it in your region, contact the local 7-Up bottling facility. RC and 7-Up are both owned by the same company.

My favorite soft drink when I was a kid was root beer. There was Hires and Ramblin.' Dr. Pepper was a big favorite of mine, too. Dr. Pepper is best from a soda fountain when it's mixed a bit stronger than bottled. Once and for all, there is NO prune juice in Dr. P!!
A regional favorite among yankee old-timers is Moxie. It tastes like a blend of cheap house-brand cola and Vick's cough syrup. You can only get it up here in New England because we're the only ones who didn't get the joke!
