Subject: Aussies - Jeff St John
Need help from my fellow older aussies.
Do you remember Jeff St John ? He was kinda eclectic and used really electronic sounds back in the mid to late 70's. He suffered from either spina bifida or cerebral palsy and was in a wheelchair.
My friend just recorded a song with him and she is too young to know of him. So I was saying to her "omigid he was like a legend back then" - and then I promptly went blank when I tried to think of his big commercial hit.
I can picture him on stage singing it - and it just wont come to me !
The last I saw of him in public was a guest appearance on A Country Practice in the early to mid 80's. Then he basically became a recluse here in the hills of perth - working out of his recording studio on his own property.
Can anyone remember the name of his band ? it was something short and sweet like Sky or something. And the big hit ?
Help !!!!!!

Incidently, I was working on A Country Practice at the time of his guest appearance in 1985. He has spina bifida.

Yes, I remember Jeff St. John. In fact I remember seeing him in concert in Brisbane many years ago. His big hit was Teach Me How To Fly. Can't remember the name of his band though ???

I still have something like Sky in my head connected with Jeff. Unless he had a song with Sky in the title ! That could be throwing me.

Nah Gecko - you are same age as me arent you ?
He was never really a chart topper - his audiences knew him from pub gigs mostly. I dont recollect any airplay at all to be honest.
I know of him more because in perth his names gets whispered in hushed tones suited only to legends !!!!

I dunno. How old are you? I'm 30 (okay - 31 next month ::)). I always figured we were about the same age cos we have the same taste in a lot of bands (especially Aussie bands).

hehehe I assumed we were the same age for the same reason !! But nah I am an old fart - 35 last month :o
Thats why I was old enough to fly to Melb every few weeks to see Bwian - and you weren't !!!!!!

Yep - I think I was in LOVE with Brian when I was about 13 or 14. I think that's how old I was when 50 years was a hit (I still love that song!) ;)
I remember songs from the 80s by my grade at school. Take on Me was a huge hit when I was in Year 8 (I think), The Choir Boys were a hit in Year 10 (along with Slice of Heaven cos I remember singing that song on the way to science class with my friends ::)), and 1927 was huge later on - Yr 11 or 12.
But Brian's still my favourite 80s crush!!

Yes for me Bwian was a post highschool lurve. During high school it was more Bowie and hmmm Bowie !!!
50 Years - to this very day - is still the song I want played at my funeral !!
Take on Me - I adored - until I accidently went to A-HA's hotel room after their concert and discovered they were not very nice boys at all.
Slice of Heaven !!!! Luv it to death. ba da bup ba da bup da da bah de dah dah bup !! hmmm think I missed a few ba da's !!
Will have to dig out all my party pics of me and Xmen from those days - lots of extra people in them too like Red and Wilbur, and a few other bands that use to come to the parties too.
