Subject: Shields & Yarnell
I was wandering through the movie chanels on satellite this weekend, and happened to catch "The Wild Wild West Revisited.
Now I saw this movie when it first came out in 1979, but have not seen it since. I remember loving it as a kid, having been a long time fan of the original series.
Paul Williams is a great actor in addition to a songwriter and singer, but his performance as the villan was especially well done.
What caught my attention though was a part I had forgotten. Performing as 2 clockwork guards (Williams called them his "$600 people", a spoof on the popular series at the time, "The Six Million Dollar Man") were mimes Shields And Yarnell.
For those that forgot the mania in the 1970's for variety shows, Shields & Yarnell was unique. A 1 hour show every week, featuring 2 mimes. They got their start as performers on the Sonny & Cher show, and still perform their act today in Los Angeles.
For those that remembered that show, I thought you might get a kick out of knowing this, not that it is worth anything :P

Now this is a doozy. Of course I remember them. They had their own tv show! I don't think I liked it though.

You are not the only one-that is why the show didn't last too long.

Now WHY did you have to go off and do THAT for? Here I was leading the rosy life, and YOU had to bring up Shields and Yarnell! Why do you hurt me so? Why don't you bring up Doug Henning too, while you're at it? I could stand to lose a pound or two, but I didn't want to do it by puking for three days! You BUM! >:(

Oh man, Doug Henning!!!
In the early-mid 1970's, I went through a big magic phase, just like most kids did during that time. WHen Doug reserected a lot of Houdini's tricks, he made big news for several years. I still remember him doing the Water Torture trick for the first time.
I have to admit, I prefer Doug Henning to David Copperfield or many of the newer "Illusionists". Today, the show is more special effects then slight of hand. Lots of lights and flash, very little substance in my view.
I saw ZIgfried & Roy several years ago, and was not all that impressed with their "Magic". Oh yes, it was flashy, and impressive. But I had less the feeling of seeing magicians, and more the feeling of seeing a special effects show.

Paul Williams is one of my cult faves, wrote Rainbow Connection and Phantom of the Paradise, hilarious role in Smokey and the Bandit, truly a gifted artist.

Doug died 7 February 2000, of liver cancer.
In addition to being a magician, he was also a vegitarian, and he ran for office. He ran for House Of Commons in Canada under the Natural Law Party.
