I always liked Beaker, the assistant to the scientist guy Bunsen Honeydew. Beaker always seemed to get blown up or mutilated during Bunsen Honeydew's scientific demonstrations.
What cracked me up was the look on Beaker's face as it became more and more apparent as the sketch went on that he was about to become the fall guy yet again....
I just remembered, all Beaker could say was "Meep Meep!"

Yep! Another vote for dear ol' Beaker from me - and the Swedish chef, too!...mind you, all the characters were marvellous...
There was a very sad and touching tale when Jim Henson died suddenly in 1990. At the rememberance service, apart from the floral tributes and what-have-you, there was a solitary figure of Kermit - prominently displayed from the rest...just underneath was a solitary message...'I've lost my voice...'
Subject: Re: Who is your favorite Muppet character?
There was a huge big blue character - kind of in the same vein as Sweetums. Not sure what he was called, but he was my favourite. You realy only see him at the opening credits I think when the big monster characters walk through the arches. I remember I used to have a Muppet annual when I was younger (taught you how to make a papier-mache fozzie bear!! which I attempted - much to my mother's annoyance!!) Anyways, this blue character was in some of the cartoons! :)

There were so many it's hard to pick a favourite. But I liked that creepy looking guy called "The Phantom" on the Muppet Show. :D He's only on in a couple of episodes. I think the one with Alice Cooper was one of them.
I also liked that newscaster guy.

Why Beaker is my favourite Muppet:
Despite only two facial expressions (mouth open, mouth closed), one word of dialog ("Meep") and an unchanging plot in every sketch, Beaker cracked me up every time.
Typical Beaker scenarios:
- busy pouring coloured liquid into test tubes, suddenly does double take on hearing his name mentioned by Honeydew in context of a dangerous sounding experiment
- stares straight at camera and shudders
- shakes head violently and drops test tube
- taps Honeydew on shoulder with increasing urgency
- waves hands about in protest, saying "Meep" a lot
- falls backwards in dead faint
- falls forwards, banging nose on desk and saying "Meep"
- loses nose in explosion
- hair black and face covered in ashes, post explosion, mouth opening & closing like a fish
- nose and eyes positionally rearranged on face during Muppet chemical catastrophe

Yes, he is Don Music. He could never get the notes right and could never remember the words to his own songs. I think he was banned from Sesame Street because he banged his head on his piano and that was promoting violence or something. ::) Whatever.
I like Beaker and Bunsen Honeydew also! I forgot about them! ;D
Subject: Re: Who is your favorite Muppet character?
Beaker was my favourite also. The newscaster was also a good character because he was always serious.
However, I think all the characters together is what made the muppets a hit. If any one muppet was missing, it would have made a big difference.
Subject: Re: Who is your favorite Muppet character?
Kermie has always been my fav. but others that I love is Beaker, the Swedish Chef, Statler and Waldorf, Animal, Cookie Monster, and Ernie.

I am also a Kermit and Miss Piggy fan. I loved watching Muppet Babies and Sesame Street when I was younger. Now that I'm older, I get my Muppets fix from the "Keep Fishin'" video by Weezer. :)

Just a little Muppet Show trivia; I found this article in a back issue of "Discover" magazine dated January 1982. It had an issue about the 2nd spaceflight of the 1st Space Shuttle "Columbia".
________________________________________
"Who Hogged Capcom?"
NASA refused to say who dreamed up the novel way to rouse astronauts Joe Engle and Richard Truly for their morning ablutions in space. Whoever had it, the idea was inspired. Each day the spacemen were awakened by the dulcet tones of Miss Piggy and other familiar porkinauts from the "Muppet Show" feature "Pigs In Space".
The 80-second dialogues from First Mate Piggy and the Swine Trek crew were loaded with private and public jokes. "It is time to speak to the astronauts," chirped Miss Piggy on the first morning. "Really and truly?" asked Captain Hogthrob. "No," replied Dr.Strangepork, "Engle and Truly." That joke, said Miss Piggy, had been used before. "It doesn't matter," said Strangepork. "So has their spacecraft!"
Muppet creator Jim Henson called it a "wonderful lark" to prepare the messages for NASA. Miss Piggy was starry-eyed about the experience. Cooed the inimitable astropig, "Moi was over the moon about it."

Oh that's sweet....and sad. How attached we get to American Icons ... it's amazing to me still how much we love those characters and actors on television, especially from when we were children.

I believe you're right, karen, the show was produced in England with a lot of UK technicians and production staff. However I think we have to recognise that the majority of creative input came from Americans like Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Plus of course Sesame Street was a US production (from "The Children's Television Network", if memory serves).

I hope you don't mind me clarifying...it's Children's Television Workshop. You remember this kind of stuff when you watch Sesame Street five days a week (sometimes twice in one day, at 8AM and 4PM) between the ages of 3 and 6. :)

Whether made in England or on the moon, these are AMERICAN ICONS because they mean something to us. Kermit, Sesame Street, etc, are AMERICAN ICONS because they are part of American Culture.....and Henson was American.
