Subject: Elton John
I have just recently become a big fan of Elton's music. I mean, I've known about it and have heard it for a really long time now, but I've just begun actually becoming a fan. He has so many great songs that I never took the time to listen to or appreciate, and to tell the truth, I love almost all of 'em (there are a few exceptions of course). What are everyone's favorite songs by Elton John?
Mine would be:
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Philadelphia Freedom
Someone Saved My Life Tonight (If you have not heard this you NEED to check it out!)
I'm Still Standing
Island Girl

Don't go breaking my heart
I'm still standing
Passengers
Candle in the wind

Sacrifice
Daniel

All of Kayhepburn's choices (apart from Daniel - I didn't like that). I also like 'Healing hands' and the album song 'I never knew her name'.

Better Off Dead
Benny and the Jets
Daniel

I Guess that's why they Call it the Blues.
I'm sure there is more but that is all I can think of right now.

Elton's catalogue is so vast so there's always room for debate about which songs of his (and mostly Bernie Taupin's) are good, bad, or somewhere in between...
...some good songs mentioned by those above, lebeiw - you can't really go far wrong with that lot...
I veer heavily towards "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" (normally a good half-drunken singalong!), but can I make mention of three of his earlier works, "Skyline Pigeon", "Lady Samantha" and "Border Song" (the latter covered extremely well by Aretha Franklin...)
Incidentally, you may like to know that "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" has its origins dating right back to 1968, when Elton became too involved in a somewhat disastrous relationship (my sources don't say with whom...) - this would have been around the time he and Bernie started collaborating on material...apparently, to this day, they never co-write in the same room...
Anyway, happy discovering...!
Modified to add...
Oh dear, once I get going I'm quite difficult to shut up...!
The metaphorical "someone" in the title was a guy named Long John Baldry who talked Elton out of this predicament...he used to front Bluesology, of which Elton was a member...when Elton (still Reg Dwight at the time) decided to leave the band and concentrate on his songwriting with Bernie, he pinched Long John's forename and used it as the surname of his new moniker..."Elton" was pinched from another Bluesology colleague, Elton Dean...ok, that's enough!
Just had a quick re-listen to "SSMLT", and indeed, it's still a cracking tune...ATB...

I heard the song was about a time when he was concidering getting married but decided not to (from the lyrics of the song it will be my guess that he walked in on his bride-to-be and someone else. Of course I don't know if he was out of the closet when that happened. Probably not).

I have been a very big fan of Eltons since way back in 1972. I love all of his songs but I esp like the ballad, I feel like a bullet in the gun of Robert Ford, if memory serves me correctly this was on the album Rock of the Westies. I don't think there is a song of his that I don't like. I had his posters all over my walls. I bought all his 45's and albums and have since replaced most of them with CD's. I went and seen "Tommy" four times just to see him in the part with the Pin Ball Wizard. Elton John is, to me, the very best musician. :D

In the Oscar winner "Almost Famous" movie starring Kate Hudson, there's was this shot of them on the bus singing to a song ..I liked it so much that I kept replaying the scene on my VCD just to hear the song..
I then found out that it's Elton's John "Tiny Dancer"
so my favourites of Elton John are
Tiny Dancer
Rocket Man
Your Song
Don't Go Breaking My Heart

"Holiday Inn" is a great song too, if you haven't heard that one, I recommend checking it out!
I just noticed the Weird Al avatar looks really misplaced in this thread, especially since I started it... just showing my broad taste of music :P

I like to listen to Capt. Fantasic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy all the way through. Every track. I think I've owned it on four different formats.
I also enjoyed the majority of the "Two Rooms" homage. Particularly Sinead O'Connor's version of "Sacrifice".

I bought this the other night. :D Do you have the disc with the bonus tracks (Philadelphia Freedom and the two Beatles covers)? He does an excellent job, especially with "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"! :)
Captain Fantastic is definitely a listen-through album.
Subject: Re: Elton John
I love the Captain Fantastic album, I went and bought the CD after the switch from LPs to CDs. I like the song "Better off Dead" it has a great beat, I also love "We all fall in Love Sometimes" and "Curtains". What a great album/CD.

I sort of like most of the stuff aleady mentioned - not my favorits but good music. My favorit is an album called "Tumbleweed Connection" that has a decidedly western, post Civil War theme. First heard it in Chile in 1972, of all places.

Nope. Just a a freebie (radio promo) from the 90s. Unfortunately, MCA's "Super Saver" series... recorded at about -4dbs. We always had to jack that one up! :)
Tumbleweed connection--- another good one! Madman across the water... another good one...

I just saw Elton live at the Harley Davidson 100th Birthday Bash in Milwaukee. I've always liked Elton John, however, he wasn't the best choice for a biker bash. :-/
