Subject: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
If you look at them, these are two very, very similar groups. Very 70's, very ornate production, very well-crafted songs, very professional songwriting. Of course, there is one major difference: Abba's music always seems very upbeat, even the "sad" tunes like "Knowing Me Knowing You," whereas the Carpenters always sounded sad, even with so-called happy tunes like "We've Only Just Begun."
Frankly, I prefer the Carpenters. Abba just never did anything for me, whereas the Carpenters always hit me right there. Perhaps it was Karen's voice.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
Carpenters, definitely. ABBA can get kind of annoying at times, while I can most always listen to Carpenters. I mean, ABBA has some good songs like "Does Your Mother Know?" and "Take a Chance on Me", but Carpenters' music is way better IMO.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
I love both, but would have to choose The Carpenters.
Abba are really good fun, and great music to have at a disco, but The Carpenters are much better otherwise IMO.
I wouldn't necessarily say that The Carpenters always sounded sad, how about "Top of the world"??
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
If I really had to choose I think it would be Abba...or maybe it would be the Carpenters...why i've sat here for five minutes thinking about it I don't know...I like them both equally!
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
I prefer ABBA for a Sturday night having a home party with my friends.
I prefer Carpenters for a Sunday afternoon relaxing with my girl firend.
I like both.
btw, what IMO means???

It means in my opinion. Sometimes people use IMHO instead meaning in my humble opinion.
On topic I think I agree with Youke. Abba music is good for parties and The Carpenters is generally just easy listening type stuff.

IMO = In My Opinion Youke
Hubby flatly refused to take me to the show Mama Mia even after I promised to sit as far away from him as possible, he said he wasn't wasting the money because he'd still be able to hear what I laughingly call my singing and we'd get thrown out.

Thanks Karen, boris66au!
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
The Carpenters get my vote. Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice. To me their music is timeless.
I never cared for ABBA.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
I prefer the Carpenters. As a kid, I got a teddy bear that I named after them but I couldn't quite pronouce their name so I came up with "Carpenger" (Still have him ;D)
The one song that they did that I really like but most people have never even heard of was the Piano Picker-sung by Richard-instead of Karen. Very cute song.

I like both groups's songs..
You can enjoy them in different mood settings...
I will vote for Carpenters cos of the great songs and great voice of Karen.
Anyway slow songs doesn't date sound as dated as fast-tempo songs...

Karens voice does it for me everytime....although ABBA were slick....they didn't give me goosebumps.. :)

I love both ABBA and the Carpenters equally.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
To be honest, I can't see the connection. I would never listen to The Carpenters if I could possibly avoid it!
But ABBA are just wonderful!
Though, for some strange reason, the full glory of ABBA only seems to be fully appreciated by Brits and Australians. Don't know why that is but it certainly seems to be the case...
all the best

I'm no Brit, Aussie, or yank, am an American & I dig Abba too and Freeda when she went solo.

I think I agree with you on that one.
I'm not a big Carpenters fan really. Abba all the way for me. They're not one of my favourite bands, but 'One Of Us' is just a fantastic, fantastic song. I also adore 'Knowing Me Knowing You', 'Winner Takes It All', 'Name of the Game' and 'SOS' :]
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
I guess I saw this thread late... ::)
Anyway, I love both bands in question here. I have greatest hits CD's from both of them. I think I prefer ABBA more for their music and The Carpenters more for Karen's voice. :)
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
At the moment it is ABBA. We recently saw MAMA MIA, which is based round ABBA songs. It is a brilliant show. If I'm in the right mood Carpenters are good, but ABBA are tops right now.

I NEVER have liked the Abba song "Fernando" yet lots of people say it's thier fave....mine is "Knowing Me, Knowing You"...as for the comparison...Karen touched my heart like Abba never could. Thanks to Karen for all the wonderfully spiritual music ;) You are sorely missed :'(
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
Kenny, I can't believe you would like Abba or (gasp) the Carpenters! :o
Actually I'm surprised at all the support here for the Carpenters at all; they're generally maligned as too nice and "mushy-gushy" or bubble gum (thus = bad) in the category of Manilow, Cassidys, et al.
Abba gets trashed too, but not as much from my experience!
To me, in any case, they don't seem comparable at all!
Anyway, MO:
I like them both, but Carpenters probably win out cuz I liked more of their songs.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
Well, I seem to be late also in entering into this discussion, but I will throw in my 2 cents anyways. :)
Well, this would be a hard choice for me. Partially, because they had 2 totally different styles, and were popular at opposite ends of the decades.
The Carpenters were big in the beginning of the decade. I even remember seeing them when I was young at the Universal Ampetheatre in Los Angeles (a few months before my parents took me to see Blood Sweat & Tears and The Fith Dimension).
Typical with the beginning of the decade, most of The Carpenter's songs were about love. They were fairly simple, with lots of accoustical feeling. Add to that the fantastic keyboard skills of Richard, and the skills of Cubby as the drummer (yes, the same Cubby from The Mickey Mouse Club).
Although later on, they did get some fun quirky songs. "Calling Occupant Of Interstellar Craft" is always a favorite of mine.
Abba was more in tune with the last part of the decade. Disco, with lots of synthetic sounds and an almost plastic harmony. They sang of more material things, like "Money Money Money".
But both were very gifted, and spoke well for the current era. I can't think of the early 1970's and not think of The Carpenters. I also can't think of the end of the decade and the Disco era without thinking of Abba.
But I find it hard to compare the two. It would be like asking me if I like Beethoven or The Beatles more.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
just catching up!
I loved the natural talent of Karen. Her singing was so natural without all the effects you hear on many female vocalists.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
In my opinion, there is NOTHING similar about the two groups. However, I prefer the Carpenters, though I like some of abba's work.
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
Carpenters, no contest, hands down.
But I do like ABBA too. :)
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
It's hard not to love the Carpenters....the sound is SO SO 70s!
Subject: Re: ABBA vs. THE CARPENTERS
Totally differn groups here. The Carpenters were a great song writing duo...Abba was special, unique, the Carpenters did a lot of layering, overdubbing of the harmonies...Abba did not, they just sang the harmonies...
