Subject: Did you know this?
Way back in the seventies, a friend told me to get a magnifying glass and a playboy magazine that had liquor ads in it. He said to look closely with the magnifying glass at the ice cubes(would have rather looked at other things in the book. ;)) in the glass, in the ad, and I would see faces in the ice cubes. Sure enough, he was right. I dont' know the purpose of this, or if this is still going on today. Sounds pretty weird but it's a true story. Anybody else ever try this?

Can anyone post the ad here so we can try it? Anyone got any 70s Playboys lying around?
Subject: Re: Did you know this?
I heard something about that in the 80's but never found anything. I was always more interested in the *center* of the magazine. ;)

These are called "subliminal messages." It wasn't just found in Playboy. It was common place in ads during the 70s-and still happens, today. The purpose of these "sublimial messages" was supposed to hit the subconscience (without you knowing it)
Here is website with some FAQs http://www.bcx.net/hypnosis/sublims.html

You don't need to go to Playboy. The Sunday NY Times is cheaper (although I admit that the photos arenb't as interesting ;)) Ice doesn't photo very well, so is always air brushed, and images imposed. Also think about the shape of containers, especially cosmetices, and the positioning of the models. There is a great film on this called "Killing Us Softly" Its old, but still very relevant.

Yes that is subliminal advertising and its been used for quite a few years now. Whether some things are a coincidence Im not sure sometimes......
-A few years ago I think the ice cubes shown on Coke vending machines had images of naked women in them.
-Remember about 10-12 years ago when Pepsi came out with the cans that if you stacked them one on top of the other the word SEX would appear.
-If you look closely at the camel on a pack of Camel cigarettes you can see the profile of a man that we will say is rather "aroused"
-More currently the face of the advertising character Joe Camel closely resembles parts of the female anatomy. Take a close look. The nose resembles a womans rear-end wearing a bikini bottom. The mouth/lips resemble a womans genitals.

I also heard that stores use subliminal messages in the music they play through the speakers, stuff like "You will not shoplift". You can't hear it with the "naked ear", but it's there.
