Subject: POP ROCKS
Does anyone remember "POP ROCKS?" You put a handle full of candy in your mouth, and the candy would start popping inside your mouth. It came in different flavors. It was made by Kool-Aid. My neighbor in my old neighborhood worked for Kool-Aid. He used to bring boxes of Pop Rocks home for us kids in the neighborhood. We used to down those things like crazy. I LOVE POP ROCKS!!!!!

Loved 'em. There was a rumour going around that several children had died from..........how can I put this........non-detinated rocks "exploding" in their throats, thereby, suffocation. ::) Did any of you guys lose any friends to them? ;) ;D

The rumor I heard was that Mikey, of LIFE cereal fame, died after eating Pop Rocks and guzzling Coke because his stomach exploded. There was a kid's joke circulating at that time: "Did you hear Mikey died? -- He lost his Life." Any connection?
I remember in the late 70's, a full-page ad in the Baltimore Sun describing how an R&D guy at General Foods came up with Pop Rocks while trying to make carbonated Kool-Aid. The ad proclaimed Pop Rocks were totally safe and the rumors were just BS. This must have been a real profit-killing rumor if the company was forced to run suppression ads instead of the regular promotional fluff.

That Mikey thing is so old....and he didn't die as we all know. And I do remember the joke.

I vaguely remember Mikey as an adult in a resurrected LIFE cereal commercial several years back.

I loved little Mikey! Think I saw some early 90s commercial when he was all grown up into kind of a chub, ha ha the pop rocks may have puffed him up. Liked Pop Rocks, they kind of sizzled your tongue, think they (not tongues) became illegal.

Nah, they're not illegal. But they are available at "Spencer's" gift shops. :D 8)

Sure. But how about 'Space Dust'? I guess it was just ground up Pop Rocks.
Space Dust was more popular in my area.

I'm sure I posted this on an earlier thread about Pop Rocks but here it goes again. When they first came out, I was living in a different place as my sisters. They didn't have them yet when I introduced the candy to them. Well, they really got a kick out of them. We set up a system where I would buy them, ship them to my sisters and they would sell them to their friends for a profit. ;D This worked for a while until where they were living started getting them in stores. :( So much for our enterprising ways.

If tongues became illegal, how would we taste?! (just like chicken, I suspect... ;) )

There is nothing wrong with Pop Rocks. They were a cool candy. That rumor about Mikey was nothing but lies. If Pop Rocks were not safe, they would of taken them off the market a long time ago.

Have you seen the movie "Urban Legends"? There's a scene where a college professor challenges the class to disprove the U.L. by eating Pop Rocks and drinking a soda. No one will do it. Finally, the class clown does it and scares the class & professor by faking a seizure.
Subject: Re: POP ROCKS
I have never seen Urban Legends. I don't know anyone that has attempted eating pop rocks and drinking soda. If anyone has done this, let me know.
Subject: Re: POP ROCKS
I liked it when they sizzled in your mouth and on your tongue. ;D

What I liked to do, was give them to people who have never had them before. "Here, try this candy" and then watch their reactions when it starts to sizzle and pop in their mouths. ;D
