Subject: Captain Kangaroo
Who out there used to watch Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans, and what the heck was the rabbits name that Captain Kangaroo would talk too, and what else does everyone remember from this fun show (if you thought it was fun, and if it was on in your area)
Subject: Re: Captain Kangaroo
I never really got "into" Captain Kangaroo but it always seemed to be on in my house because my sisters used to watch it. I can still hear the music from the show in my head.

The rabbit's name was Bunny Rabbit. The Captain was a funny dude, sometimes Bunny Rabbit would pull a prank and Captain would stare into the camera with a blank look as gook ran down his face or something. He used to give bunches of carrots to Bunny Rabbit, and it always made me hungry for a carrot. I liked the story he read called "Stone Soup."

I loved Captain Kangaroo! Those sideburns of his were something else!
Subject: Re: Captain Kangaroo
I enjoyed the Captain as well. However I never fully understood "Dancing Bear". Was it some kind of interpretive dance he would perform? It always seemed like he popped in for no apparent reason. My only real "beef" about the show.

ha ha ha, I remember that Dancing Bear. Didn't the Captain lead the group on some type of journey, to Tibetz, or was that on Howdy Dooty?

First off, one of my favorites!
Second, this is a perfect place to settle a bet. If I remember correctly, this is the show that had Picture Pages with Bill Cosby. A friend of mine says it was on Sesame Street. Anybody with a clear recollection?

This is a link to some facts on the Capn'. Did anyone else know that he was the original Clarabell the Clown on "Howdy Doody"? He was fired for being "too aggressive" and getting the "kids too keyed up right before dinner". ::) Now, through the wonders of modern psychiatry and chemical wellbeing, we all know that they were all just afflicted with ADD!! Give 'em a PILL!! ;)

I knew that. You guys must be thinking about Mr. Greenjeans because he passed away a long time ago. I was trying to find some links to some of the latest things the "Captain" has been up to, but it didn't work out. Sorry. I know that he is in his 80s and is still pretty active. I know he makes personal appearances a lot. Never met him personally but I hear that he is a super nice man.

Yes Picture Pages was definitely on Capt. Kangaroo. You are right Howard as Bill Cosby used a squeaky pen. I remember you could get the pages Bill used at the library so you could follow along with him.
Yes Bob Keeshan is still quite alive but hes got to be getting way up there in years.

I used to watch Captain Kangaroo every Saturday morning. Back then sat morn cartoons and kids programs was what we all waited for, we didn't have cartoon network and nickalodeon. The kids of today wouldn't survive living in the 70's.

Thanks, Jeffpcmt. Actually, I got off my duff and researched on my own. This site , and several others, confirms that it was a Capt Kangaroo segment.

And Howard, from what I've seen, it last aired Dec '84.
Of course, no one has mentioned the 90's attempt of the "All New" show. I remember catching 5 minutes of it one day. ughh! :P That just kinda faded as fast as it appeared, thankfully!

Remember the funny Captain Kangaroo theme song with violin, dee dee dee dee, dee dee dee dee, da da da da da da da daaaa, (repeat).

So,what was shown after Captain Kangaroo went off the air in 1984?

I loved the way the Captain made things with construction paper, "construction" had such a thick magic sound and when he cut it, it made a rich cutting sound - he'd just shape and cut and I'd be mesmerized, wishing I could make stuff too. Then the scotch tape cutting also made thick and sticky sounds, the way he manipulated it carefully - I was too little to cut with scissors. Also, wasn't Tom Terrific the cartoon on the show?
