Subject: More Talk About TV Commercials

What Public Service commercials do you remember from either the 60s or the 70s ?

I remember an anti smoking commercial which had a cowboy entering a saloon. One cowboy said to the other ,"We figured,....cough cough, you'd be here" cough cough and everyone in the saloon is coughing for like ten seconds.

Rubella Umbrella - Get your Rubella  shot :P

V.D. Commercial -Girl on telephone says, "Well...that must mean I have it to" :o

Urban renewal commercial in which a small animal is walking around an ally and a child is saying, "Here kitty, kitty" and the animal turns out to be a rat. :(

It seems like the networks today are so intent on making money there are so fewer PSA type commercials on anymore.

Well, there was Woodsy the Owl, with his "Give a hoot, don't pollute!"  Not sure if I really cared for his tone though - a bit strident. ;)

(btw, you can still find Woodsy at http://www.fs.fed.us/spf/woodsy/ - he's apparently still available for hooting...er,...speaking engagements.)

And of course those "Keep America Beautiful" spots with the Native American (then "Indian") crying... http://www.kab.org/psa1.cfm

Here's a link to a page with a lot of 70's commercial clips (audio) and kids tv show themes, and a few PSA's (down toward the very bottom) :

I also remember a PSA that was about electric power lines, and how kids shouldn't climb trees that were near any.  Not sure whether that was in the 70's or 80's.  I remember it was an 11-12 year old boy (billed as "tree climbing expert, Billy " - and, while climbing down from a tree, he informed us that "...if you touch one of those lines, or if your weight makes a branch touch a line, you could get hurt..."

Don't know why I remember that line so vividly - I just do. :)

And he is still going strong:

Wow, yes. Whatever happened to Neighborhood Watch ? Last I knew of any was in 1985 or so. Do people still have a Neighborhood Watch ? I remember the metal signs on the streets, too. I live in a major congested city and no one does Neighborhood Watch anymore, at least not here.

Hehe I still remember on a scavenger hunt taking the neighborhood watch sign as one of the items ::), it had a redcircle with a line through it like the NO BOZO stickers of the mid to late 80s, however the image inside was a shadow of a thief.  :o

In the seventies British TV had some great public service commercials.  There was some boy (what was his name?) and his cat Charlie warning about going with strangers I seem to remember.

I can also remember a couple, Petunia and ?, who did a series of these about dropping litter and not swimming out of your depth plus a couple of others.

There was also Rolf Harris and his 'Learn to Swim' campaign and Jimmy Saville "Clunk Click - every trip" before seat belt wearing became compulsory.

Nothing along the lines of VD stuff though.  It was only in the late eighties that advertising of 'feminine' products was allowed.

Remember the "commercial", but stuck on the boys' name also (if, indeed he did have one).

Not forgetting my fave, the mighty Tufty the road-safety squirrel (no, I haven't been drinking!), Dave "Darth Vader" Prowse doing his Green Cross Man duty - as did certain pop luminaries like Les Gray (of Mud) and Alvin Stardust ("Hey, you must be out of your tiny minds...!")

Must have left a certain impression on me - I still haven't managed to be run over - yet!

I liked the one with the Indian standing on a hill with a highway in the background and he's crying about pollution. Actually anything that is about nature and the environment is good.

Anybody remember "Johnny Smoke"? I think it was a public announcement commercial. He was a cowboy, I think. Something maybe about the dangers of smoking? ??? Also, there was a commercial that I just barely remember. I think Willie Mays was in it, talking about drugs. All of a sudden there was a tidal wave coming over a stadium. Maybe I was dreaming this.
