Subject: colours and design style: hints pls

Written By: SunUp on 04/14/03 at 00:30 a.m.

hi folks,
i've offered to make a website for someone, and it must have a 70s look. i know that the colours for this period are avocardo green, harvest gold, and rust. ... then, later the pinks and purples came in with disco.
does anyone know of good links to pictures of 70s designs, colour schemes, etc?
i've done searches on google, altavista, ixquick etc and have visited lots of them. i've also tried clipart.com and various other free image databases. i'm getting a rough idea, but i though u folks might know of "the best of the best" and could direct me to it :)
thanks.

I dont have any sites to offer you, but I wondered if you've considered using red, white and blue b/c the bicentennial was a big deal in 76, before and after..and since its in the middle..? Maybe a big flag with some lil pics of fads (dancing people or a pic of mood ring, etc) just an idea!  :)

I think of avacado green, harvest gold & rust when I think of 70s appliances!  Otherwise, the 70s to me were strictly orange and yellow.

I know this is probably a little late, but, in addition to the usual, multicolored "oozy-lava-lamp-looking" lettering that a lot of 70's nostalgia sites use, you might also try to incorporate some colorful spheres into your layout.  I remember a lot of circular things going on back then.  And I don't mean a bunch of colors *within* one sphere - I mean monochromatic spheres *next* to (or overlapping) each other, like in the MasterCard logo:

...or of the same color, like polka dots - but BIG.  Seems like Sonny & Cher had big circles on their show's set...  And the birds in the Partridge Family intro were drawn so simply, so minimalistically, like basic geometric shapes, but each shape filled with just one color:

Game shows would have big circles on the walls, or have big flowers, like on The Dating Game...

http://www.angelfire.com/celeb/billbixby/images/RD16391.jpg
It was simple and bold - it was like, "Here's a big yellow dot - and hey here's an even bigger, purple one!"...  It was almost like it was made for children - big and cartoonish...

Anyway, just think *large, free floating basic shapes, only one color in each*. :)  ...Oh, and do come back and give us the link to your site so we can all dig it!
