Subject: Sad/Cheezy/Storytelling songs from the 70s

Written By: Katrinawitch on 03/03/03 at 11:40 a.m.

(I originally posted this one on the wrong board....sorry, ChuckyG...)

There was a thread about Sad-story songs, but I wanted to start a new thread because there were so many story-telling songs, especially from the 70's (what was it about the 70's, anyway!?)

Wildfire (the one about the Indian, whoops, sorry, Native American girl who lost her pony!)
Shannon (what the heck was that one about, anyway....was Shannon a dog?)
Ode to Billy Joe(one of my favorites, because of the movie)
Delta Dawn
The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia
The Night Chicago Died
Billy Don't Be a Hero
Indian Reservation (Cherokee People)
Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)
Please Come to Boston
Harper Valley PTA

Aah, these really bring me back!  Can anyone remember any more?

I just love this song!  I sang it Karioke one night & got a standing applause!  And I can't sing worth a cr@P!  I think this is one of those songs that just makes everyone feel good when they hear it.  Especially when you are drinking in a bar  :P

Yes, Shannon was a dog. The song was written about Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter named Shannon.

This is a great thread! It instantly made me think of the song "Last Game Of The Season (the blind man in the bleachers)" by David Geddes. Someone else had a hit with it as well but I can't think of who at the moment. I think I'll go download it :)

The most cheezy song was "Seasons in the sun" By Terry Jacks

I'll bet the longest story-telling song was Bob Dylan's "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" from Blood on the Tracks.  I think that one clocked out at over 11 minutes.

When did Harry Chapin record "Cat in the Cradle"?

Any decade's song is fine....it just seems that there were so many more from the 70's.

I do remember both the song "Run Joey Run" and the show "Run Joe Run"!

I don't remember the show but I do remember the song. When it first came out, I loved it. But now...well, let's just say if I hear it again, it will be too soon.  I was living in Conn. at the time and I was at the beach with a bunch of mother's friends. This one guy kept talking about his "boy." Then he said that his "boy" sang a song called, "Run, Joey, Run." I was shocked. So, I met the dude's father. I'm sure he doesn't remember me.

I don't know if you folks names 'em all, but you definately named enough to make me tear up :'( and get a queezy feeling. ;)
I miss the 70s as a time to grow up but I can leave my music memories behind for the most part.  Cats and the Cradle I think tops the list for most sad/cheezy.

What about Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris.  Not sure if that was 60's or 70's.  Not sure if it was released as a single but 'Barbed Wire Love' by Stiff Little Fingers sort of tells a story.  In fact quite a few of their songs do.

A couple of more recent songs spring to mind.  Never quite sure of the exact titles of either.  'Christmas in New York' by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl is one and the other is 'Need a Little Time' by Beautiful SOuth (I think).

Cheesy Story Songs.. (my guilty pleasure)

1. Rocky by Austin  Roberts ("Rocky I've never been in love before, don't know if I can do it... Rocky I've never had a baby before... Rocky I've never had to die before... ) This song goes through the entire lifespan of a doomed young girl in about 3 minutes.. Sorry to say.. I loved it...

2. Tell Laura I Love Her- I forget who did it... Ray Price I think... another doomed tragic song...

3. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad- Meatloaf

4. Lucille/ Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town- Kenny Rogers

5. Having My Baby- Paul Anka

I have already seen people mention Ode to Billy Joe, Billy Don't Be a Hero, One Tin Soldier, Wildfire, Shannon, Brandy etc etc...
another couple that may not really be so cheesy... Smoke on The Water- Deep Purple,  The Night Chicago Died (can't recall who sang it)

Oh, I thought of another one,  it's a little known ditty by Olivia Newton John....called the Banks of the Ohio.. about killing her lover on the banks of the ohio.. which reminds me of a couple other homicidal songs... The River- Neil Young,
Hey Joe- Jimi Hendrix... do these count?

Ray Peterson! That's him.. His name was on the tip of my tongue.. for some reason I kept thinking Ray Price or Ray Stevens and I knew it wasn't Ray Stevens.. He did the funny songs. (with the exception of "Everything is Beautiful")
I was born in 67 ... I remember hearing "Tell Laura I Love Her" as a little kid ... so I guess that's why I associate it with the 70's.  I just loved all those sappy songs when I was about 5!

There was a sad country song called "Spring" which Tanya Tucker sang in 1975 or 1976.

Also, "Don't cry Joni" which was sung by Conway Twitty and his daughter Joni.

Gawd, yes! This must have been the one by Red Sovine about a "lil' crippled boy" using his late father's CB radio "to keep in touch with all my trucker friends..."

How do I know so much about it? It was a belated Top 5 hit over here in 1981! There's no accounting for taste...!

Jud Strunk's "Daisy A Day" was also rather soul-destroying...!

...as was Daniel Boone's/Wayne Newton's (take your pick) "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast"...("I Just Couldn't Stand To Hear Those Words Again..." - how true!)

Lol, me too, Honey, gross!  I like "One Tin Soldier", worked at a Summer camp and the kids would lift the tables and crash them down every time it came to the part, "one tin soldier rides away."  The counselors and camp director would get mad, it was hilarious!

Jim Croce also had his share of sad songs, many of them in the "lost love" category. I think the fact that he died so young and tragically just adds to the sadness of some of his songs. I suppose the same could be said for Harry Chapin, who died long before he should have.

No one mentioned Convoy by C.W. McCall(?)  And depending on your perspective it could be called the first rap song to make the charts.  But its definitely very cheezy.

Not Cheezy-Smoke on the Water/Deep Purple, Working for MCA/Lynard Skynard, Son of a Son of a Sailor & Margaritaville/Jimmy Buffett, War Pigs/Black Sabbath, I Shot the Sheriff/Bob Marley
