Subject: The Great Gatsby
Written By: JC008 on 02/27/03 at 06:03 p.m.
I need to know what the significance was of why it took until 1974 for the Great Gatsby to be made into a film. I am doing a research paper on the adaptation from what was different in the book and the movie the time the book was wrote and the point in time the movie was made. The movie was made a lot "fluffier" leaving out the true deception of people...is that b/c of the difficult times america was in? What attracted america at the time to make them want to see a movie about the roaring twenties filled with tommy guns, bootlegging and flappers? ??? Is there anywhere I could look to find these answers? If anybody knows some info would be greatly appreciated....thanks.

Hey JC :)
Um...I don't know exactly where you would look, but you can always google for other essays about Gatsby.
About your "time period" point...Robert Redford played Gatsby in the movie, if I'm not mistaken, and the movie was released a year after "The Sting" (winner of best picture Oscar, btw) which was also set in the 20s, methinks...so maybe you can talk about that?
I'm sure someone else has a better idea :)

I think that one reason was that it was a Robert Redford vehicle project, can't make him look to bad when he's at the top ot the Hollywood hill. Also the charchters in the book were still quite young, it's been over 20 years since I read it but I think they were under 30, Robert and the rest were well over that.
