Subject: Who did "The Monkey Song"?

Written By: Maggie on 02/26/03 at 05:31 a.m.

Monkeys domn't turn up too often in teen pop, but there's one song I recall which had a lot of monkey growling to it. My brother used to have it on a cassette when I was a kid. It's called "The Monkey song" and the lyrics begin "Did you ever hear the story of the monkey King Kong?" and on to the chorus:
Sing a monkey song /got to sing along /Come on monkey, sing a monkey song!
Sounds cute, doesn't it? The sound had a lot of Hammond organ or growly electric piano to it, a tinge of early jazz, and these monkey growlings all about the chorus. It will have been done around 1970, and I'm sure it was a single. Anyone here who knows the artist's name?
Notice: I'm not after the "King Kong Song", a track that ABBA cut for the Waterloo album in 1974. That's worth checking out too, though: with a B-movie quality, theatrical singing and it's quite different from their later disco leanings.
