Subject: ELO Question
Can anybody tell me who Jeff Lynne is referring to when he sings...
"Don't bring me down...Brrrruce!"
(from the song "Don't Bring Me Down" - 1979)
I heard the song the other day and I have always wondered about that line. Thanks. :)
Subject: Re: ELO Question
Hi Karen
I can partly answer !
For years I thought it was Bruce * as well, but one day I checked it out and it is : Groooossss !
as in :
Don't bring me down, grroosss
Most of the lyrics sites confirm this
So maybe it is simply a rhyming word, or maybe they were saying it was Gross to bring them down.....?
* As An Aussie, it was always funny to think it was 'Bruce', as that is a generic term for someone is typically ocker (Aussie).... (Neville is another...)
FB ;D
Subject: Re: ELO Question
It is in fact, gross as FBVP has said...I heard Jeff Lynne interviewed once and he said that it is pronounced "Gruce" and it means absolutely nothing..it just sounded good in the studio...

Many thanks to Fuss and Jonman for answering my question. :-* It's interesting to think that he (Jeff Lynne) threw that in there when it didn't have any particular meaning! ;D

Maybe he was just following Lennon's philosophy that lyrics don't really have to mean anything. They're just words.

Yep ! True ! In that case Gore, a lot of musicians are following Lennon's philosophy ;D ;)

You are all wrong - it was "Bruce" and was referring to Bruce Jenner who was Jeff Lynne's lover at the time

Instead of wasting everyone's time being rude, why don't you provide a link with information to prove your opinion.
An opinion is all it is until you can provide evidence that will prove otherwise.

The word is actually "groos". It was made up to fill in a blank spot. check it out at http://admiralty.pacific.net.hk/~bluesky/best/elo_300.htm

the stroy of that it just sounded good is true and he later found that groooooosss is a german greeting
Subject: Re: ELO Question
The word "Grroos" is correct. I had the ELO concert on when it ran on the PBS Station. I had the words put on caption to see what Jeff was actually saying when he got to that part of the song. He did say "Grroos."
