Subject: Cold War Memories

So, what are your memories of the Cold War?
I get nostalgic when I think about air raid sirens being tested on Saturday mornings, the EBS being tested over the radio and TV and going to bed when I was 10 years old wondering if a nuclear war would start before I woke up.
Looking back, some of it seems crazy. We had an 18 year old intern working in our office a few years ago who said that he couldn't imagine growing up in a world where you were under such heavy mental duress. Comparing the worries of today to the worries of 25 years ago, it's a wonder we all just didn't go crazy.
I built a webpage with some of my Cold War Memories. You can access it here: http://frenchy84.tripod.com/coldwarindex1.html
So, what do you remember about the Cold War and how did it affect you?

Very interesting webpage. I remember having nightmares about the nuclear holocaust. We were led to believe that it wasn't a matter of IF but WHEN. I don't remember having to hid under my desk in school, I was a bit young for that. But my sisters told me about it. We were brought up to fear the Soviets and communism. As I get older, I realize that communism isn't the "enemy." The U.S. government was just as dirty as the Soviet government was. When I was in the service in the 80s, I remember having a briefing with the OSI (Office of Special Investagations). They showed us a slide show. There were two people in the car-one American, one Soviet. On one side of the car in the woods, stood an American taking pictures. On the other side in the woods, stood a Soviet, also taking pictures. Everyone knew that everyone was there. It was so ridiculous and it reminded me of "Spy vs Spy" from Mad Magazine. I remember laughing during the briefing and I think the guy presenting the information was trying not to laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Talk about your war games (or Cold War games).
