Subject: Olympic Massacre In Munich
Written By: Indy Gent on 11/02/02 at 10:31 p.m.
In 1972, 11 Israeli athletes were killed by Arab terrorists after they were kidnapped and taken hostage for 24 hours in the Munich Olympic Games. Most of the blame was placed on the German police force that was lax in their security. Although most of the Arabs were killed after several years, one terrorist remains, under tight security, in a foreign prison. (Watch the documentary, narrated by Michael Douglas, on this tragedy and the aftermath at your convenience.) Is security today better, worse or the same as in 1972?

From the little I remember of it Indy, I would be forced to say that security was a lot more lax in those days.
Terrorism was still by and large in it's infancy (I would like a better descriptor) and unfortunately I believe part of what happened to the Israeli athletes was down to the same old human failing of not really believing something could happen until it does.....
Whilst I am unaware of the specifics regarding the German police as you have mentioned, I suspect that they were acting in the way most other forces in would have at the time....
These days, the security forces that be are obviously a lot more advanced and professional in their thinking and approach.
Regrettably I'm afraid, so are those that choose to inflict misery upon others.
