Subject: Who is the best band in the 70's?

Written By: randbfan23 on 06/11/02 at 11:31 p.m.

I believe, it is a toss up between Kiss and styx. But there are so many to choose from I can't really pick just one, but there are some that can and do, so I would like to hear opinions.

For the life of me, I couldn't think of one. But answering another thread I suddenly thought of 10CC, and Queen and Australias own Skyhooks.

It has to the Brotherhood of Man

Oh my god - what am I thinking ?  I thought it said worst band.....

Skyhooks for sure, RR  (Some of their lyrics are soon to appear in the 'Sexually Explicit Lyrics' thread if I ever get to it)

Icehouse started in the 70's (methinks) so they'd get a vote from me

And the early Bon Scott-driven AC/DC

Wow, I hadn't realized that Icehouse had been around since the 70's!!!  :o  Because I had only ever heard their 80's material, I figured they were an 80's band.  I guess you learn something new every day!  ;D

BTW, I was so disappointed that their song "No Promises" didn't make it onto the charts.  That is definitely one of my favorites from the 80's!

1. Foreigner
2. Doobie Brothers
3. Van Halen
4. Steely Dan
5. Chicago
6. Elton John
7. Paul McCartney & Wings
8. Boston
9. The Eagles
10.Fleetwood Mac

Depends on how you look at it. The group did originally form in 1978, under the name Flowers. But by the time they had scored a recording contract, and released their first material Down Under, it was the Spring of '80. So after scoring several hits in Australia that year, the Chrysalis label here in America took notice, and signed them to a U.S. deal. Their debut album, simply titled Icehouse, finally came out Stateside in the Summer of '81, nearly a year after its initial Aussie release (where it was released under their original group name of "Flowers"). The album did moderately well here, too, yielding the #62 pop/#51 AOR hit, "We Can Get Together" (Summer of '81), w/ the title track becoming a #28 AOR hit as well (Fall of '81). Starting w/ their second album, 1982's Primitive Man, the group's Aussie and U.S. releases were pretty much simultaneous. So I've always considered them an '80s band myself... ;D

Quoting:BTW, I was so disappointed that their song "No Promises" didn't make it onto the charts.  That is definitely one of my favorites from the 80's!

Actually, it did. I believe you have the book that only lists the songs that made the pop top 40 in Billboard magazine, right Karen M.? Because "No Promises" did much better than you think, hitting #79 pop and #9 AOR in the Summer of '86! So technically, it was one of their biggest hits Stateside, even if it did fall short of the pop top 40...

In addition to the three songs noted above, Icehouse also scored here in the U.S. w/ "Hey' Little Girl", "Cross the Border", "Crazy", "Electric Blue", "My Obsession", and "Touch the Fire"...

Of course, still waiting for a Best of... or Greatest Hits collection to come out domestically. In fact, their entire catalog is now sadly out-of-print here in the U.S... :-( :-( :-(

Once again I thank you, 80smusicfreak, for filling me in on a subject that I knew little about.  ;) You are right...the book I use the most is The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits.  In it they only show "Crazy" and "Electric Blue" as having made it into the Top 40.  I hadn't known that "No Promises" made #79 on the charts....

Does the band/singer need to come from the 70s or just have music in the 70s? In this case, it's a tie:

Pink Floyd and David Bowie.

Now for bands/singers that began making music in the 70s:

Roxy Music and Brian Eno.

For me the best band of the 70s was Led Zeppelin, for these reasons, their musical diversity everything from head on rock and roll to accoustic folk, and then there was the image, they looked the part more than most.I recently visited a music store with all kinds of posters on the wall from different bands and decades. The poster of Zeppelin was one of those full flight types with Plant  posed as a conquering viking and Page in black dragon suit and looking cooler than anyone who ever picked up a Les Paul with Bonzo and Jones driving the whole thing, you could almost hear it as well as see it.The other posters didnt have a chance. The recent DVD release of concert footage from the 70s shows like Earl's Court show them in their prime,a classic rock image with every frame.

A lot of good 70s bands have been mentioned here, but I am going to nominate the Good Ol' Grateful Dead. They got started in the 60s and are generally associated with that decade, and they lasted until Jerry's passing in 1995 (at least as the Grateful Dead...their current lineup is known as the Dead).

This being said, they really did a lot of great work in the 70s. The studio albums American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, Wake of the Flood, Mars Hotel, and Terrapin Station are all quite good, and even the disco-tinged Shakedown Street has its moments.

Their live shows were so great, I wish I could have experienced some in person. Thank goodness for their liberal taping policy, which has provided johnny-come-lately Deadheads like me the chance to listen to their older concerts. The 40-minute plus version of Dark Star (Europe Tour 1972) is just one example of the long, strange, beautiful trips they took from 1970-1979. Then there are the 1971 Ann Arbor, Michigan shows with Ron "Pigpen" McKernan belting out "Turn on Your Lovelight" among other things. I have a copy of the ad that ran in the U of Michigan student newspaper for those shows...ticket prices of $3, 4, and 5!!!! For the Grateful Freakin' Dead!!!!

OK, I'll stop channeling the spirit of Garcia now!

What's a gurner?  I loved Noddy Holder too.  I really like the story about him walking down the street and running into John Lennon.  The story goes that John Lennon looked at him with a wry smile and said "I know who ya are".  They both laughed and just kept walking.

Dave Hill was also an interesting character from the bottom of his platform boots to the top of his really bad hair!!  Oh and that roller-door brow of his.  Still thought he was really cool though.  ;D

I looooved that song, it had a sort of Spandau Ballet/Ultravox New Romantic sound, with just the right amount of Bowie thrown in there!  Na na na na nananana, Nooo promises, but if you should fall...

I also liked Icehouse's "Hey Little Girl" from the same album.

Icehouse is definitely an '80s band.  I mean, for example, A Flock of Seagulls formed in 1979, but you would't call them a '70s band?

Back to bands Down Under, would you consider Split Enz a '70s or an '80s band?  I associate them with the '80s because their indie hits ("I Got You," "One Step Ahead," "Six Months in a Leaky Boat") broke in North America in the early '80s.  However, they were big in Aus/NZ years before that and released records starting in '74 or '75.

It's about 9 and a half minutes but the first coupla verses are genius. Neil is a great innovator on guitar and Rolling Stone said Stills was in the top 50 ever. I am going to agree with almost every post I've seen so far, but I won't say which ones I don't agree with cuz I'm a nice little punk girl( contradiction in terms I know). I can't believe that some really great bands were left out in the cold of this post though!!

I am going to put a couple of them up, even though I might be one of the only ones to put them up here, okay, I will be the only one to put these bands up here but they deserve to be on this post too. Here it goes...

The Sex Pistols
The Ramones
Siouxsie and the Banshees ( I NEVER spell Siouxsee right... see?)
The Clash
and of course....my personal favorite...
Adam and the Ants... Some of the Ants best music came out in the 70s like Plastic Surgery, Cartrouble, Bathroom Function, Digital Tenderness, Zerox, Kick, and even Whip in my Valise.

Now I know I am probably all by myself on this one, as if I'm standing in the opposite side of a room with everyone huddled on their side of a line draawn on the floor, but I don't care. I'll just keep my head up and keep on liking any music I want to, even Queen 8).

My definate favorite was the early 70s James Taylor group made up of Carol King, Leyland Sklar, Danny Koochmar, James, and an awsome drummer (forgot his name).  Last part of the 70s returned from the Peace Corps and don't remember any favorite band(s).  Just kind of ambled through life for a while trying to figure out what was happening, all music seemed to be disco and punk.

Maybe I'm coming from left field on this but..there are a lot of famous and well liked bands of the 70's, but what about the ones that most influenced, or had the most impact on music and the future of music..
My choices for these would be..

T-Rex -his imprint is in new wave to 80's goth & mercybeat.

Iggy & the Stooges - far beyond the Sex Pistols & the Clash (or any other "punk" band), Iggy brought punk & DIY asthetic to the stage. Surprised no one has mentioned him so far.

Kraftwerk - some of the roots of electronic pop starts with them. Their use of electronic media and rythyms are still with us today.

Funkadelic(Parlement/Funkadelic) - rock/psychedelic rock to R&B/funk..with the exception of James Brown, every rap/hip-hop & rap/rock band  of the last 20 years find there roots here..where would we be without George Clinton.

Roxy Music - absolutely far ahead of its time, the pairing of Brian Eno, Brian Ferry made this band THE 80's band before the 80's. Without them there would be no 80's sound or ambient, electronicpop or new age (hmm, maybe thats a good thing..)

King Crimson - Pink Floyd before Pink Floyd, experimental sounds and styles still coloring the music of today, no other band other than Pink floyd itself or I guess Genesis (before Abacab) is as powerful an influence..

Inspired by recent posts, I'd have to go with artists who saw success in the '70s, but are not likely to appear on Time/Life Music of the '70s comps.

David Bowie
The Clash
Kraftwerk
Brian Eno
Roxy Music
The Ramones
Talking Heads
Blondie

If I had to pick one above all others, it would be
DAVID BOWIE

You hear so much about what a drag the 70s were and how boring and blah blah blah, but I think the greatest music ever came out of that decade. All of my faves are of this era. But to me, the primo supremo would be

1. WINGS
2. QUEEN

Queen was a phenomenal band 2B sure!  Anyway, it's all subjective, whatever one enjoys listening to.  I can't count the number of times I've heard '80s New Wave ranked on as "bubblegum," "sterile," "vapid," "shallow," "cold," "repetitive," or so many other negative adjectives.  But, hey, screw'em! I like it and that's what counts.
The funny thing about my generation, the first post-baby boom generation, is how so many of us went for the music our parents listened to.  Sooo many kids my age loved CSN&Y, Grateful Dead, Doors, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Who, and so forth.
My parents wouldn't be caught dead listening to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, or Benny Goodman.  They couldn't wait to differentiate themselves from the older generation.  That was part of the whole establishment they were rejecting.
I did the same thing with '60s and '70s rock.  New Wave felt like MY music.  I grew to despise the whole hippie thing the way my parents hated their parents' lifestyles...and for much the same reasons.  I found it phony and hypocritical.
Fortunately, I didn't turn my back on the older generation's music forever.  Now I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Donovan, The Beatles, The who, and so on.  Heck, I even gained an appreciation for big band and lounge music from the '40s and '50s, stuff my parents hate to this day!

While Icehouse started out as a covers band (they were called Flowers at the time), they didn't actually release their first album (which I would highly recommend) until 1980.

I think the best band of the early 70s were Slade, who made some great records and always put a smile on my face.  From the mid 70s onwards Abba would get my vote for some outstanding music.

Quoting:

Wow, I hadn't realized that Icehouse had been around since the 70's!!!  :o  Because I had only ever heard their 80's material, I figured they were an 80's band.  I guess you learn something new every day!  ;D

BTW, I was so disappointed that their song "No Promises" didn't make it onto the charts.  That is definitely one of my favorites from the 80's!

Slade was relatively unknown in the U.S. until 1984.  Quiet Riot had two hit Slade covers, "Cum on Feel the Noize" (1983), and "Mama Weer All Crazy Now" (1984).  This helped Slade achieve Top 40 status with "Run Runaway," and a hit album with Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply, a title I kept thinking of during the great California energy crisis of 2001!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I used to work in a CD shop and always had the wannabe hip kids asking where the "alternative" music is.. I always would say "Alternative to what?" REM was "alternative" in '85 but by 90 they were all "pop"ped up..I guess we need a new (and better) term to descibe it.

JOY DIVISION
Joy Division wasn't what you'd call a "70s band," but they were a band in the '70s.
Why did I love Joy Division?  As Charlie Brown sez:

For some reason, it wasn't until I had listened to them for years until I found out Ian Curtis killed himself..
I never knew why, although I read that he had sort of a deathwish..I guess that was what "Dead Souls" was about?

He was very young, just under 24 when he hanged himself on May 18, 1980.  He had severe depression and worsening epilepsy.  These health problems compounded by a crumbling marriage and the stress of being a new father were too much for him to bear.  Joy Division had met great success in Britain and Europe. They were about to embark on their first U.S. tour when Ian committed suicide.
The band immediately changed their name to New Order.  The first New Order album, "Movement," is essentially a Joy Division album.
There were rumors that the name "New Order" was a neo-nazi reference.  The Nazi Third Reich did call itself "the new order," and some pointed to the name "Joy Division" coming from the name of the brothels in the Nazi concentration camps.  One problem, the "joy divisions" were from some novel (can't remember which), and a figment of the author's imagination.  New Order always said their name referred to the "new order" for the band following Ian's death.
There was a '70s punk band called "The New Order," you might still find their record in used record stores.

A truly great band.  :D

They had their only chart hit in the 80's with Touch of Grey in 1987 - I think that might have been their only music video too.
