Subject: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
Myself I am immensely happy about the situation. Even though there were a few good songs and even a few good bands, exceptions, "bee Gees" one of the greatest Classic bands or group in my opinion, The Bay City Rollers, even though they had a short career, Heatwave, and K.C. and the Sunshine band. I am glad it is dead not because of the music, but it would not fit in with the music of today. A disco band of group today would be turned down in a second, because of the rap or even the hardcore rock bands out there. Maybe they might be successful, but I highly doubt they would fit in, because even if they were successful, after a couple of years, they would be cut down by either the press or the critics, and maybe even a lot of the fans who might just grow out of the music, hint hint in a way it is like the bubblegum music from the past and present in the music world. Little kids or girls get into it, and as soon as they grow up or grow out of that kind of music it is all over for those bands or groups. Disco it is sort of the same way, in a sense adults after a few maybe even ten years, grow out of the music, and that genre of music is over or in this case dead!!!!

Things have a habit of coming back when all those 'little girlies' grow up and get all nostalgic, hence the fact that 70's and 80's nights are big pullers in clubs, hence boards like this existing......

For the record:
Disco Never Died.
Disco marked the dawn of dance-based popular music. Growing out of the increasingly groove-oriented sound of early '70s and funk, disco emphasized the beat above anything else, even the singer and the song. Disco was named after discotheques, clubs that played nothing but music for dancing. Most of the discotheques were gay clubs in New York, and the DJs in these clubs specifically picked soul and funk records that had a strong, heavy groove. After being played in the disco, the records began receiving radio play and respectable sales. Soon, record companies and producers were cutting records created specifically for discos. Naturally, these records also had strong pop hooks, so they could have crossover success. Disco albums frequently didn't have many tracks -- they had a handful of long songs that kept the beat going. Similarly, the singles were issued on 12-inch records, which allowed for extended remixes. DJs could mix these tracks together, matching the beats on each song since they were marked with how fast they were in terms of Beats Per Minute. In no time, the insistent, pounding disco beat dominated the pop chart and everyone from rockers like the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart, to pop acts like the Bee Gees and new wave artists like Blondie. There were disco artists that became stars -- Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, Chic, Village People, and KC & the Sunshine Band were brand-names -- but the music was primarily a producer's medium, since they created the tracks and wrote the songs.
Disco lost momentum as the '70s became the '80s, but it didn't die -- it mutated into a variety of different dance-based genres, ranging from dance-pop and hip-hop to acid house and techno.

Thanks Hairspray. For a moment I thought I was gonna have to stoot-slap this dude back into the last century. I'm still hyperventilating from the headline...

As for me,I love disco music.I just cannot get out of this time warp. And as far as I'm concerned,I'll just stay in this time warp of the late-70's disco era and never come out.I love old vintage music.I'm a chip off the old block. My Father enjoys his doo-wop while I enjoy my disco. -howard- :)

Would a rose, called by any other name, still smell as sweet? You bet.
Subject: Re: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
I liked disco in the 70s, but it kind of fizzled in the 80s. But at least it lasted longer than the lambada craze. :D

I just HAD to bring this thread back. I think it's hilarious! :D
It'll be nice to see if some of you feel the same way as you did when this was first posted back in May.
I like my Disco music and I'm proud! http://www.sanfords.net/Spots_free_graphics/Dance/dance3.gif

But did you like it? Do you ever play any Disco oldies but goodies?
Subject: Re: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
Well...to be honest, I was never exposed to straight disco. Don't get me wrong, I like 70s music: EWF, The Ohio Players, The Commodores, George Benson, etc., but I never truly heard much disco...but what I DID hear sounds and looks a lot like techno and rave music for today

Did you read my longest post on the thread? That explains the similarity between Disco and Techno. ;)
Similar - but not the same. :-[ Although I like Techno alright.
Subject: Re: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
Said it before, say it again: I love Disco! I am not glad it's "dead" (even if it's morphed).
I love lots of music, so it's not like I'm raving against anything else. Just defending an oft-maligned form. I'm glad the 40-somethings are getting their "culture" re-aired a bit these days - not on a contemporary basis, but at least lots of radio retro time and albums.
I know it's probably been 10 years now (yikes), but remember Rick Astley's hits? He definitely had the Disco sound - in a time when people were still sneering at it.
Subject: Re: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
I LOVE Rick Astley!!!! THat's what disco sounded like? I thought no one remembered because everyone was high
Subject: Re: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
I love LOVE LOVE!!!!!! disco. I listen to disco nearly every day and it always puts me in a good mood. That's usually the only thing that gets me dancing ;D
Subject: Re: Who is all glad that Disco is dead?
Meh. A whole lot of disco was stale, repetitive garbage, but there were a few good songs. Chic, for example, was awesome. "Play That Funky Music" was a great song. "Lady Marmalade," before it was butchered by the Fearsome Foursome, was great.

I never thought of it that way (his SAW work reminded me of Jellybean's work at the time - '87 or '88) but I agree with you.
I love disco. I had the privelige of DJing a 'Studio 54' theme party last year and it was a blast. I was really getting into it spinning the Hi-NRG stuff like Patrick Cowley, Sylvester, Patrick Hernandez etc...
I heard quite a bit of disco-sounding tracks back in '95-96 when I went clubbing on a regular basis. Some songs come to mind:
"The Bomb (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)" by The Bucketheads (Samples Chicago's "Street Player")
"Got Myself Together" by The Bucketheads (Samples GQ's "Disco Nights (Rock Freak)"
"America" by Full Intention (Samples Patrick Juvet's "I Love America")
"Get On Down" and "Got A Feeling" by Harlem Hustlers
"Keep On Jumpin'" by Todd Terry featuring Martha Wash
(I think Lisa Marie Experience also did the same track)
"Disco's Revenge" and "Let's All Chant" (cover of Michael Zager Band's tune) by Gusto

The influence is there, I guess. It must be a BS attempt at capturing yet another vibe/tune/style from the past. Oh well. What else is new.
Thanks for your interest in the topic, PF4Eva. We can't always agree on everything, right? ;) :)

I agree with Howard. Disco is the thing. This music today is so boring. This "Hip Hop" music has got to go. At least you sing along with the Disco songs and dance to it. Explain to me how you can sing to "Hip Hop" music and dance to it? Unless you had one too many, NO WAY MAN!!!!!!

It's a strange one this but I don't know whether to take you seriously. I like Rick Astley's stuff (Never gonna give you up for me was the song for the late eighties) and when I admit that I like his music, people think I'm a bit wierd - I hope they don't to you Syncronos because I think you've got good taste.
SAW (Stock, Aitken and Waterman) were as disco as it got in the 80s. You hear hits from Sinitta, Big Fun (who covered The Jacksons 'Blame it on the Boogie') and Lonnie Gordon and, even though they were criticized for being called 'manufactured pop'. I thought the Hit Factory did a brilliant job in giving us great music.
Even now, you hear Steps (covered Bee Gee's tragedy) and S Club 7 (especially 'Don't stop moving') and you know that Disco will never die.
