Subject: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
I think Mariah Carey's voice hurts my ears, and that lady who had that one hit in the 70's is horrible too.
I wany anyone's opinion of whose voice in the music business is the most annoying.
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Mariah Carey can call every dog on the block. :)
I never could stand Bobby Sherman...UGH!!!!
That chick who sings in the band No Doubt....'Hey Baaaybe, Hey Baaaybe'...and they call that crap music.
I have to do some thinking because there are quite a few 'singers' (note the quotes) who I can bash. :)
Peace,
A'isha

Let's do some bashing.
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Willie Nelson.
Of course I do agree that Mariah Carey's voice is irritating. I think all she knows how to do is scream…
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Celine Dion has an incredible voice. She is definitely talented, but she really needs to lose Barbra Streisand. You see, she seems to be a copy of her and she doesn't have to be.
And talk about gross...Courtney Love? I had surgery five weeks ago and even with that blasted tube down my throat I could singer better than she could. What is it about her that got her in the business besides being married to Kurt?
Peace,
A'isha
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Count another vote in for Mariah. Also, Britney Spears, Cher, Bruce Springsteen (am I going to get flamed for that one? LOL), and Reba McEntire (sp?).
I'm sure there's more, but my brain is tired.
*Edited to add Whitney Houston

Yoko Ono....oh..wait, you said music...sorry ;D
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
I used to think that too, until my dad got a greatest hits collection and I enjoyed it.
On the subject, I liked REO Speedwagon, but Kevin Cronin was not one of my favorite singers. Rush's Getty Lee's voice also leaves me cold. :-X

I, too, would have to cast my vote for Mariah Carey - when she does that high-pitched squeal, animals start running in circles!
I also find the bombastic Celine Dion exceedingly irritating - I don't think she knows the meaning of the word "subtlety"!
And last, but not least, on my list is Macy Gray. She sounds like the illegitimate love-child of Joe Cocker and Bonnie Tyler!
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Mariah Carey! Yes! #1 irritating voice on my list. :-X
But I do like Celine Dion. ;)

Stevie Nicks
Hey, don't get me wrong! Her voice works with her songs, which I like! But I can only listen to 2 songs of hers, at most, at a time.
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
I love Stevie Nicks, but you won't have to duck. :) And Willie is a great songwriter but I don't care for his voice.
Now, don't kill me but I can't stand Lou Reed...
'TAKE A WALK ON THE WILDSIDE' and shut up Lou. Besides, he insulted Jimi Hendrix...who rules. ;)

It's quite scary to think that, in my opinion, Celine Dion used to be (stress that, please), quite a good artist. Songs like Think Twice were my favourite back when and if they were released.
Yes, that's the one, the Whatever thread, that I started... which, thinking about it, probably wasn't a good idea for a thread, seeing the difference between song conceptuality and writing/performing.
I think Dennis Wilson, although a great singer in his early Beach Boys years, (Little Miss America had them flocking) could be much hated as a singer during the 1970 (Got To Know The Woman) period. But we have to take into account that by then it was the smoking and drinking that was killing him.
That's all for now.

LeeAnn Womack's voice gets on my nerves. It's high and shrilly.
Someone also mentioned earlier that Janis Joplin's voice got on their nerves. I have to totally agree with that. One of her songs came on the other day, and I was like, "Um, her voice is driving me crazy." Don't get me wrong, though, she definitely has a unique sound...it's just not a sound that I care to listen to. (Ouch, I'm going to pay for that one.) ;)
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
I've never cared for Bonnie Tyler's voice. Whenever I hear a song by her I have to either go forward (if it's a CD) or change the station (if it's the radio). I'm very curious to know what her voice sounded like before she had surgery to remove the nodules in her throat...
Another that comes to mind is Michael Bolton. Talk about putting too much emotion into a song! Why, oh why did this guy ever become a singer? Arrrrghhhhh! ::)

I agree that MB is a bit of an acquired taste, and also an excellent songwriter. Overall, I like most of his stuff. He did, in fact, record as a hard rock/heavy metal artist from 1979-85, and I feel those albums (two w/ the band Blackjack + two solo) were his best. However, I disagree that the heavy metal genre consisted of nothing but "non-talent". Bolton's 1985 album, Everybody's Crazy, is excellent all the way through - not a dud on it, IMO... :-)

I was never into speed or thrash metal, which I do consider to be mostly "screeching and screaming". Same goes for most of today's so-called "metal" bands, or those horrible rock/rap hybrids. I was mainly referring to the "classic" metal acts of the early to mid '80s, such as Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, etc. Heck, just last weekend I attended my first metal concert in quite a while - a triple-bill of Dio/Deep Purple/Scorpions, and they all sounded pretty good to me... :-)

BTW Rebel, that was not an attack on what you said. A lot of metal singers are really bad -- but not all of them.
Many people find heavy metal difficult to listen to, but I reject the claim that it's talentless. Modern metal music (not the crap they call metal on the radio, but REAL metal (heh heh)) actually takes a lot of talent to play properly and many of the musicians involved are very well respected in musical circles.

Well we like to think of ourselves as being a little sophisticated. LOL. And like I said, heavy metal is often quite technical to play and complex in its arrangements, rather like classical music. Even classic musicians have drawn the parallels; a lot of heavy metal musicians are classically-trained too, so there's a connection from that angle as well. But I will agree that it is often the singing that turns people away.

Yes of course they do. That's because he gives his birthdate as July 10, 1949. However, he was playing bass and singing in a rock n roll band called the Vegas Kings in 1957. There are pictures of him on a biographical website (http://www.dio.net), that lists his entire discography from his very first recording, made with his band Ronnie and the Redcaps in 1958! He dropped out of college to play rock n roll. I don't know what college age is, but I'm sure he had to have been older than 8 or 9. That would put his REAL birthyear somewhere between 1940 and 1942...

Yes, I know the birthdates given in books can be erroneous, so over the years, I've learned not to treat them as gospel. And in this case, I think you're right, Goreripper. Actually, it doesn't surprise me that he may be older than his early 50's, 'cause he sure didn't look 34 to me in the "Rainbow in the Dark" video, lol. But then again, your post implies that Dio himself is helping to perpetuate this, so the discrepancy will continue, I guess...

I gotta say (and I apologize to the Canadians out there who love him) Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip...he sounds like Katharine Hepburn in On Golden Pond!! Seriously!! His voice grates on me like no other...
Imagine, if you will, Kate Hepburn singing in her OGP voice...
"They shot a movie once in my hometown...everybody was in it from miles around..."
Now tell me I'm wrong!! ;D
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Billy Ray Cyrus - he sang the National Anthem at a UK game in '97 and was off key thru the whole friggin song.
Subject: Re: Who has the most annoying voice in music?
Fern Kinney - 'Together we are beautiful'
What a screecher! ;D
Anything from Eminem and Mariah Carey.
Aled Jones - 'We're walking in the air . . .'
Anything from The Pogues (sound's like Bob Geldof after a few drinks).

I think Mariah Carey's voice hurts my ears, and that lady who had that one hit in the 70's is horrible too.
I wany anyone's opinion of whose voice in the music business is the most annoying.

Mariah Carey hurts my ears too. The singer you are referring to must be Minnie Ripperton, the song is Loving You.
Natalie Maines (Dixie Chix) is another one I can not stand to hear, and oh yeah how can I forgot Shania Twain, she says WOO so many times in her songs it about sends me over the edge. I never liked her at all.

Why is it always the ladies that can't stand Shania's.............*ahem*........voice? ;)

Billy Corgan-sounds like nails on a chalkboard "TOOOONIIIIIGHT, TOOONIIGGGGHT!!!!" >:(
Mariah Carey-way to high pitched most of the time and her egomania shows quite a bit in her music
Garth Brooks-sorry this guy is a terrible singer
Fred Schneider (B52s)-how affeminate can you get ???
Eminem-why is this guy so highly rated? He cant sing, listen how monotone and uninspired he is.
Britney-why ask why??
