Subject: LET'S GET CAT STEVENS INTO THE HALL OF FAME
Okay, there are so many artists that have been inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, but so far, Cat Stevens isn't one of them. There are so many inducted who have half of the talent of Cat and half the heart.
At Catstevens.com there is a petition for all who enjoy Cat to sign to help get him inducted into the Hall of Fame. Personally I can't think of anyone more deserving. Please, the goal for signatures is 10,000 for Cat to be considered. The signature tally, as of five minutes ago was 8,834. So we need some more signatures. Please go to this link and support a great artist.

I think Cat Stevens should be in the Hall of Fame solely on his early works. As Yusef Islam, he has taken stands directly opposite of his music. He has said that Salman Rushdie deserves to die (prompting the Dennis Miller barb on SNL) and remaining non-commital on 9/11 (By keeping silent, I believe he shows at least latent support for the al-Queda terrorists.). I do not have anything against his chosen religion. And he was a talented singer-songwriter. I have tried to hold down my believes until now, and I apologize to Yusefcat, Catlover, and other Stevens' fans.

It is a misconception that Yusuf ever supported the death sentence on Rushdie! He was misquoted! He simply did not say the things he has been accused of, and has on many occasions tried to set the record straight! As for the 9-11 attacks, Yusuf HAS condenmed the attacks saying that his religion was hijacked! He has expressed horror over it many times and has even donated much of the profits from his latest boxset to the victims family! The remainder has gone to feed refugees in these war torn countries! He even sang an accapella version of PEACE TRAIN for the NY concert! Please take it from someone who has had the wonderful to meet Yusuf twice in the last two years, that he is really a very peaceful man, and is also very kind and considerate and would never wish harm on anyone!

I would like to say one more thing on this issue! For those who have not seen Cat/Yusuf's episode of BEHIND THE MUSIC, it will be re airing on WEDNESDAY, May 29 at 12EST! Check your local listing as to when it will air in your area! Anyway, Yusuf explains what really happened during the Rushdie issue and what was really said! PLEASE don't believe the media so quickly! They have been known to twist things around!
And alsp, PLEASE believe me when I say Yusuf HAS condemned the attacks of Sept 11! If you go to his website,

Hi J.C. So many people have never heard the truth about Cat/Yusuf and the Salman Rushdie thing. Yusuf never supported the fatwah and never condoned any form of terrorism. As Catlover stated you can read some of his statements at Mountain of Light, but he now has a new website. Go to http://www.yusufislam.org.uk and read his articles there. He doesn't believe in taking one person's life and was very distraught over the events of September 11, enough to make him donate most of his proceeds on his recently released boxed set to the victims of 9-11.
The media isn't going to put out the positive image of Cat/Yusuf. That is not the norm of the media. But some of us who have interacted with Cat/Yusuf or met him can vouch for what kind of person he is. So many of us love him because he is a good person. Cat or Yusuf, he has always been a nice person.
Don't worry, we aren't angry with your statement because it is going to take a long time to undo the damage the media caused back in 1989. People are beginning to let go though and 'The Very Best Of Cat Stevens' went platinum and the radio stations are playing his music again.
Yusuf is a nice person, that is why so many of us stand by him. Not many artists will take the time to send condolences to a woman who lost her husband, but in 1987 he did that...I was the receiver of his condolences.

I dare say, anyone who has really listened to Cat Stevens, understands the depth with which this man feels life. Religion, politics,name change- it does not matter- the music stands as written. The poetry lives on in the hearts of his listeners.
To me this is the essence of "hall of fame" induction. Has the artist moved his audience? Does the music stand as strong today, as 20 years ago? Can the music touch? Teach? Heal?

Based on your words and the article, I will trust that Yusef Islam is a right-minded Muslim and would not condone any violent acts. But a few American Muslims, including a small number of Nation of Islam members, believe that violence done for the "right" reasons is justified. I don't know if that would include the WTC destruction, but they have remained silent except when burning the flag is involved. I hope this is not the belief of any right-thinking Muslim organizations. :-/

J.C, Violence is never an answer to any problems and no real practicing Muslim would condone such a thing. Yusuf spoke on his website in an article posted there last night about terrorism and said that the events of 9-11 were wrong. And I hate flag burning as well, it is mean and also very childish. Now I have spoken out all over the web about hatred and violence from CNN to Tolerance.org. Most of it just got me nowhere, people just called me a 'jew-hating terrorist' which is the furthest thing from being who I am.
In the Qur'an it is stated that the taking of one human life without justification (meaning murder, not defending one's self) is like taking the lives of all mankind. But unfortunately we have some who call themselves Muslims and kill to make statements.
And the Nation Of Islam is not part of the true religion of Islam. It was founded my Elijah Muhammad and is carried on by Louis Farrakhan, a man who is far from the real teachings of Islam. Islam never condones any form of racist teachings.

His politics notwithstanding, I think that the very fact he is a Muslim may preclude him from even being considered as a Hall of Fame inductee for quite some time. This of course would be neither fair nor right, of course, as he made some inspirational music, and that should be all that matters.
From what I've seen of the process however, induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame seems dependent on which legend is flavour of the month at the time, as much as anything. All the best for your campaign however. It would be nice to see the people being listened to for a change.

You do make sense in a way, but I think part of the reason he may be refused is also because he voluntarily walked away from it all! And that really shouldn't matter either! Because as you said, he made some powerful and inspirational music! So, we are all hoping that in time, we can get him in!
