Subject: first 8-track tape?

Written By: Zella on 05/20/02 at 00:33 a.m.

What was your first 8-track tape?

Mine was Joe Walsh's "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get." I don't even remember how I ended up with it. I didn't ask anyone to buy it for me.

I wanted the Stones' "Sticky Fingers" album, but was afraid my mom would object to the cover, so my friend bought it for me for my birthday on an 8-track, which was a disappointment as I really wanted the album (the track switched right in the middle of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking?").  :P

I never bought an 8-track tape for some reason. But the first one my dad bought was, I believe, a Seals & Crofts album. It totally got tangled up in the 8 track deck, so he exchanged it for another S & C album, the one with "Diamond Girl" and "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" on it. Other 8-track we had included Boston,John Denver, Dolly Parton, and Bread.

IS too bad 8 tracks didn't last very long, because they could have become sought after collectors! Anyway, as far as 8 tracks go, there was only one artist I ever had on 8 track! Can't remember which one came first, but if I found it on 8 track, I grabbed it! Which artist? Well, THE CAT, of course!

I only bought three new 8-track tapes in my life, simply because I preferred records.  They were a British copy of Elton John's "Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy" plus American copies of the Knack's "Get the Knack" and the (Bay City) Rollers' "Elevator", both of which I bought at a flea market still sealed in their original packaging.

I remember hearing about them here in Australia, but honestly don't remember them ever taking off.

I think we called them 'Cartridges'.

I suspect that we lagged behind, and by that time cassettes had come along...

I'm happy to stand corrected though.....

My first was "Life And Times" by Jim Croce-1973....My parents purchased a Record Player/Cassette/8-Track/AM-FM combo in '76 and I used to make my own 8-tracks.   My favorite memory of them though was in 1982.  My 2 best friends and I went down to Pueblo in a van to see "Loverboy" at the state fairgrounds.  We arrived the night before and there was some dog show going on, so we just pulled up next to a big bus and parked for the night.  During the evening as we were all pretty drunk my friend had brought along his 8-track player. All he had was Van Halen II, so it played ALL night! Because of the batteries running down by morning David Lee Roth sounded more like  Barry White  :D  In the morning we discovered that the bus next to us was indeed Loverboys tour bus!  We were able to wave to the band before security happened along and chased us out.

The 2 that I had (I didnt buy anymore since my 8-track tape player busted 3 times after getting warrenty service on it so I got it fixed and sold the stereo (it was an old Marantz) and got a Pioneer 50 watt seperate component system!!!! (well 50 watts was killer for the day) but the ones that I had were Billy Squire's first album and AC/DC's Back in black

Would you believe (click) I  never owned an 8-track or an 8-track player. (click)  My sister's husband had them and I used to love the clear sound, (click) but that blasted click that came in when the tracks were changing somehow put me off.

Look, who wants to hear, "Peace train sounding....click" when you can just get vinyl.  If you took care of vinyl it sounded great as well.

The first 8-track I heard though was by Led Zeppelin. (click)  I think it was 'LZ 4'.

Peace,
A'isha

The only 8track I owned was Kiss "Double Platinum".  But I used to listen to my Mom's Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Supremes (all greatest hits), My Dad's Kiss "Hotter Than Hell" & Grand Funk Railroad, (forget the name.  The one with "Gimme Shelter" on it.)

A friend had a portable player and we'd listen to "Double Platinum", his Kiss "Alive" & "Love Gun", and Boston "Don't Look Back".

Reminds me of a Beavis & Butt-Head episode where they cleaned Van Driessen's (the hippie teacher) house and they tried to put one of his beloved 8-tracks into a VCR.  They managed to destroy the entire collection…

I don't recall having my very own 8-track tapes, but my Dad had some.  I think he mostly had Elvis, but my parents did have a Moms Mabley 8 track!  :o
(I was never allowed to listen to it LOL)

I think my first was Tom Fogerty. My brother(older) asked me which tape I'd like for christmas, I Told him Foghat.      I hated those plastic display cases in the stores( with the round holes to stick your hand in)    you had to pry the door wide enough to slip it through ,in order to shoplift a tape.

I don't remember the very first one. Probably Doobie Bros. or GFR. I do remember my first 8-track player in my first car. I had to have a book of matches to hold the tape in or it would drag something terrible.  :D What was even crazier was we would sometimes be so messed up that we couldn't tell the difference anyway. 8) ??? 8) ???

There's a guy at work who buys 8-tracks whenever he can get them.  Most of the ones are from the early 70s.  He buys them for about a buck apiece at garage sales.

Why didn't 8-track tapes become collectors' items, like beanie babies and baseball cards?

I think that they didn't become collector's items because you have to have a special player to use them unlike Beanie Babies that you just need to own...you don't need any special equipment to enjoy them......

I never had my own.  Honestly I hardly recall them being around, altho' I know they were.  Guess that's how briefly they hit the scene.

Anyway, we had a few from my sister and we still had a player in the 80s until that cheap system went bust.  I think we still have the Sat Nite Fever floating around the house, but the others Barb had seem to be gone.  The others I recall distinctly are Abba and Loggins&Messina; don't recall which albums but I know Abba had "Dancing Queen" on it, and L&M the "Mama Don't Dance".

Incidentally, I (we, back then) still have 2 record albums of SNF.  Should find that 8-track to make it more pathetic!    ;D

My mother went out and bought a "family" stereo with an 8-track tape player (I think she still has it even though she never plays it). She bought most of the tapes and the first I remember her buying was "Fiddler on the Roof." Mostly what she bought were musicals or Ed Ames.

When my dad bought our first 8-track player he got me:

Donny Osmond!! Yea!!  And he got for himself The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
I think I also acquired Shawn Cassidy and then Queen II.  That's about all the 8 tracks I remember owning.  Oh wait, I think my parents had Don Williams, Crystal Gayle, Charlie Rich and CW McCall.  That made for a fun car trip when we had the 8-track installed in the car. :)

I absolutely wore out my parents' 8-tracks of:

1) Very best of the Everly Brothers

and

2) Beach Boys - Endless Summer

*One more play and they both would have disintegrated into thin air.

However, the first one I purchased:  "Kiss - Alive II" (2 tapes).
