I'm trying to figure out what songs were being played on my birthday.I was born in March of 1974 so here are some songs of what I thought was being played during that year:

-"KUNG FU FIGHTING"
(Carl Douglas)

-"SHOW AND TELL"
(Al Wilson)

-"CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE,BABY"
(Barry White)

-"I CAN UNDERSTAND IT"
(New Birth)

-"SATIN SOUL"
(Love Unlimited Orchestra)

So,does anybody have any others? This would be great to put in a scrapbook. Thanks, everybody! -howard- :)

As I recall,  Billy Joel's "Piano Man" was popular at this particular point in time.

I'll add more as I remember them (and as time allows!)...

Aimee, the BeeGees' resurgance occurred in 1975 with "Jive Talkin" at the point when disco began.

"Delta Dawn"...Helen Reddy cover, Tanya Tucker performed it earlier
"Tubular Bells"
"Please Come To Boston"
"Bennie And The Jets"...I think

The biggest song of 1974 was The Carpenter's Mr. Postman!

I like David Essex's "Rock On."  It's cheesy and all, but it has a unique sound, setting it apart from other hits of the time.

I've read the lyrics for Carl Douglas's "Kung Fu Fighting" and I believe it really is about what it was rumored to be about!

Dunno how this thread got resurrected Howard, but if you're interested, here's what we were boppin' to...

In no particular order of preference...

Devil Gate Drive - Suzi Quatro

Jealous Mind - Alvin Stardust
Billy Don't Be A Hero - Paper Lace
The Air That I Breathe - Hollies
Jet - Paul McCartney & Wings
You're Sixteen - Ringo Starr
Candle In The Wind - Elton John
The Most Beautiful Girl - Charlie Rich
Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up - Barry White
Remember (Sha-La-La) - Bay City Rollers

I've never heard of such a thing as Womblies wombling and doing their wombling song.  So, I did a search on it.  I guess this one didn't make it across the Atlantic.  I don't know the tune or the visuals, but it sounds pretty inane to me!

Wombling Free (1977)

The adventures of The Wombles, strange creatures who live on Wimbledon Common and pick up the litter left by the humans. There's always time for a nice song and dance as well. This was a film version of the popular childrens TV show.

The Wombling Song

Underground, Overground, Wombling Free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind.

Uncle Bulgaria,
He can remember the days when he wasn’t behind The Times,
With his map of the World.
Pick up the papers and take them to Tobermory!

Wombles are organized, work as a team.
Wombles are tidy and Wombles are clean.
Underground, Overground, wombling free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we!

People don’t notice us, they never see,
Under their noses a Womble may be.
We womble by night and we womble by day,
Looking for litter to trundle away.

We’re so incredibly, utterly devious
Making the most of everything.
Even bottles and tins.
Pick up the pieces and make them into something new,
Is what we do!

Thank you for the 'memories' Maxwell (he said through gritted teeth!) - indeed this piece of 'kiddie' history was rather inane, it was based around the books written by Elizabeth Beresford and was hugely popular as an animated TV show...

Another fascinating fact...The Wombles were the most successful UK singles chart act of 1974!

And they did manage to cross the pond (sort of) - they had a minor-ish hit with 'Wombling Summer Party' in the US that August...if memory serves, it was a pastiche of the Beach Boys sound!

Perhaps a precedent for the runaway success of the Teletubbies in the '90s, though the 'tubbies have no vocabulary, so they can't really sing about themselves.

Why "Uncle Bulgaria"?  Was there an Eastern Bloc connection?

Guess what Maxwell - they have! "Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh' was a massive hit here in 1997! There was also an album! Which probably made the Wombles' efforts sound like Led Zeppelin in comparison...

Sadly, no...All the furry critters were named after parts of the world, i.e, Orinoco, Tomsk, Wellington, Tobermory...(It's at this point I realise I really must get out more!)
