Subject: "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 05/10/02 at 05:11 p.m.

This classic Gordon Lightfoot song has long been a favorite of mine.  It's haunting lyrics tell the story of what happened more than 26 years ago when the Edmund Fitzgerald, an ore vessel, sank in rough waters on Lake Superior.  Twenty-nine men were lost.   :'(

What are your thoughts on this?

When are they gonna make the movie?

The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was a tragedy that could have been avoided.....much like the Titanic. The lyrics are very haunting and tear at my heart every time I listen to that song.

There isn't jack squat on the movie, but they should have one.

I saw a documentary last year on the wreck and was quite moved by the story....as for the song....IMO, it was a song That I could tolerate a few times and then grew quickly tired of......much akin to anything by "Pink Floyd"  can you say Over-played? :-X

I love the song, but it gives me the chills.  I never knew the story was factual until they advertised it on "The Learning Channel".  Gordon Lightfoot is an amazing songwriter, he really captured the mood of that tragic event.

"The legend lives on in Ontario, on the Great Lake they call 'Gitchy Goomy'."

The guy on our local (and I do mean local..as in a small town radio) station HAS to play this song EVERY am...it is like his theme song or something....and while the story is sad...if I hear it one more time..I may just have to drive over there and hit the guy in the head!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I saw that same documentary, RnRF.  I've actually seen several about the wreck.  You say the song was overplayed?  Well certainly not in my neck of the woods....

I agree with you Karen M.  Not down here it wasn't/hasn't been overplayed.

I think it is a great story song, with a touch of humour thrown in without being tatseless :

"Fellas, It's been good to know ya"

Was your post inspired by the new GL hits collection that just came out here in the U.S. on Rhino on April 2? If not, I highly recommend it. It's a 20-track, single-CD/cassette collection that covers his entire career, from 1965-93. And most importantly, unlike the two Gord's Gold compilations that were released on Warner/Reprise over the years, they're all the original recordings - including "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". The new collection from Rhino is appropriately titled Complete Greatest Hits, and it's been doing so well that it's actually cracked the Billboard album chart every week since its release (currently #128 ), making it his first hit album here in the States since 1986! I bought it on CD the week it came out, and IMO, it has excellent sound quality and good liner notes, along w/ a well-picked track selection. A pleasant surprise upon first playing it was hearing "Daylight Katy" again for the first time in 20+ years, and actually recognizing it, LOL! Had totally forgotten that song of his - which only managed to crack the AC chart in the Summer of '78, but must've gotten some play on top 40 radio as well where I lived at the time. And then I got to hear what would prove to be his last pop hit here in the U.S., "Baby Step Back", from the Spring of '82. I'm pretty sure I'd never heard it before, but it's an awesome edgy/uptempo tune that should've done much better, IMO. Always great to discover (or "re-discover") old '70s or '80s tunes like both of those. :) Anyway, be sure to run out and pick up this new CD/cassette, if you haven't already... :)

I agree with Karen, this was not an overplayed song in my area, and I don't know when the last time was that I heard it on the radio.

Slightly OT...You are the first person (other than myself) that I have seen actually admit that Pink Floyd is overplayed.  I was beginning to feel like the odd man out.  As for the song, They hardly ever play it in my neck of the woods either.  It is a good song.

I think that it's a beautiful yet sad song. I haven't heard it in a long time. Maybe I need to listen to the radio when I'm visiting YC. I guess I could here it down there!  ;D

For 80smusicfreak:

I had no idea that Gordon Lightfoot had just released a complete hits album.  Thank you so much for the detailed information.  I have Gord's Gold but I think I'll have to pick up a copy of his new one. ;)

Hey Goldie, this is a bit off of the subject, but I notice that you are a nurse.  After spending a week in the hospital last month for surgery I have to give you nurses a pat on the back.  You work your 'arses' off.  I just think someone needs to thank y'all sometime.

And on the subject, Is the new Lightfoot CD available in CD stores or is it only available from the television?

Peace,
A'isha

Although they do occasionally advertise their new releases on TV, Rhino is not a "mail-order only" label (except for a recently-introduced division called "Rhino Handmade", but the new GL collection is not part of that series). In fact, because the new GL collection is doing so well (i.e., cracked the charts, as I noted in my previous post), you should be able to find it on the racks of practically any local store (if they know how to do good business, that is). The CD carries a suggested list price of $18.98 (cassette - $12.98 ), but w/ a little comparison-shopping, you should be able to find it for less. I've included a link below to the album's listing on Amazon, where you can view the cover art, see the complete track listing, listen to samples of each song, and read the extremely positive reviews posted by other buyers...

You know, the lyrics of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and the lyrics from the Gilligan's Island theme song fit either melody.

I had great nurses.  One was kinda rough though, you know, she didn't have a soft touch and killed me each time she had to deal with the tubes and stuff...OUCH, but she was a sweetheart.  I am healing gradually though.  The hardest part was not having internet access for a week and then when I came home I couldn't sit at the computer for a while...  :)

And thanks 80sMusic for the tip about the Gordon Lightfoot CD.  I only have him on vinyl right now.

Peace,
A'isha

I don't quite remember where I got that. Either on TV or I read it somewhere. Not a whole song, mind you, but just the title.
