Subject: Favorite Doobies Songs & McDonald or Johnston
What are some of your favorite songs by the Doobie Brothers and did you prefer Michael (Sings like he has a sock in his mouth) McDonald or the original lead singer, Tom Johnston?
1. Listen To The Music-1972
2. Long Train Runnin'-1973
3. Black Water-1974
4. Tolouse Street-1972
5. Another Park, Another Sunday-1974
6. Minute By Minute-1979
7. Takin' It To The Streets-1976
8. South City Midnight Lady-1976
I definately preffered Johnston, although McDonald did add another dimension to the group.

Black Water is my favourite Doobies song by far.
I admit my ignorance as I have no idea as to whether McDonald or Johnston sings it.
Can you tell me R&RF ? Ta

I like Michael McDonald. He has a very distinctive voice. My favorites are within RnRF's list. ;)

Please, don't be so hard on yourself FussBedgetVanPelt :) It was sung by Tom Johnston in 1974. McDonald joined in 1976 when Tom had taken ill. Tom came back after Michael left in the early 80's and they had a nice comeback in 1991.. The LP, which I forget the name of (Your turn to forgive MY ignorance) ;) yielded a couple hits...my favorite being "Rollin' On :D

Actually, the group's "comeback" w/ TJ up front started in 1989, w/ the release of their album Cycles, and the hits "The Doctor" and "Need a Little Taste of Love". 1991 was when they released that album's follow-up, Brotherhood, which included the AOR hits "Dangerous" and your fave, "Rollin' On"...
My picks by the band:
01) "It Keeps You Runnin'"
02) "Real Love"
03) "What a Fool Believes"
04) "You Belong to Me" (love Carly Simon's hit version, too)
05) "Long Train Runnin'"
Yeah, I favor the MM tunes. :-) (My three picks by him solo: "I Gotta Try", "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)", and "Yah Mo B There" .) Saw MM in concert a couple years ago, and even got to meet him before the show. :-) He still performs many of the DB hits that he wrote/sang lead vocals on...
However, I'm always surprised by how so few people ever seem to give Patrick Simmons any vocal credit in the band, especially during the pre-MM years - after all, he did sing lead on at least a couple of their hits. Also really like his 1983 solo album, Arcade, which I quickly ran out and bought on cassette after first hearing the killer hit, "So Wrong". But I guess I'm the only one who remembers that one... :-(

I gotta say my fave is Listen to the Music but who doesn't get excited everytime they here the opening to China Grove?
There's so many others.....

From Michael, I like "What a Fool Believes" and his solo effort "I Keep Forgettin'".

Of course silly. ;)
Besides, in an ealier post as to my favorite Doobie Brothers songs, I stated:
"My favorites are within RnRF's list."
I just happen to like Michael's distinctive (not sock in the mouth) voice more, overall.

Although I liked "Takin' It To the Street", I prefer Johnston as a singer. My favorite Doobies' song is "Cheat The Hangman".

Oh Okay..sorry about that. Hey I like Michaels voice too, just not as much. IMO, it's sort of like the case of two separate bands with different sounds...ie: Van Halen/Van Hagar...very nice
Journey with/without Steve Perry....I'll definately take Mr. Perry!
Subject: Re: Favorite Doobies Songs & McDonald or Johnston
I very recently downloaded about 30 old Doob songs, many of which I hadn't heard in 20+ years and had virtually forgotten (I am ashamed to say).
Rio
Losin' End
Take me in your arms
China Grove
Jesus is just Alright
Clear as the Driven Snow
Dark eyed Cajun woman
Eyes of silver
Living on the Fault line
Steamer Lane Breakdown
The Captain & Me
White Sun
Without Love
Sweet Feelin'
Depending
Incredible how music makes you remember events in your life, or recall special feelings you had for someone so long ago....
As for Michael or Tom, one is not better than the other; they're each fabulous in their own special way (I wish to hell I sounded like that when I stuffed a sock in my mouth!)....

I answered this one before the crash in April, but I will add to it again.
I prefer Tom Johnston's voice...Michael McDonald is okay, but I can't listen to him too often.
Here are my favorite Doobies songs:
1. "It Keeps You Runnin'"
2. "Listen To The Music"
3. "What A Fool Believes"
4. "South City Midnight Lady"
:D ;D :D

My fave is Black Water. Incidentally, I caught them about three years ago or so but I'm not sure who was original to the band or not. From where I was standing, though, it was all good! :)
Subject: Re: Favorite Doobies Songs & McDonald or Johnston
"Eyes Of Silver"
"China Grove"
"Long Train Runnin'"
"South City Midnight Lady"
"The Doctor"
+ others.
I'd say Johnston.
Subject: Re: Favorite Doobies Songs & McDonald or Johnston
I'd hafta say that"South City Midnight Lady" would be my fave, but anyting off of Greatest Hits Vol 1 or 2 would do. No preference on lead singer. The Doobies are kinda like Chicago, several hits by different members doing lead vocal.
80smusicfreak, I remember "So Wrong" well. I have it on a K-Tel cassette from the id 80s. I remember radio air play of it, but few people I know remember it at all.

Yep, I have that K-tel collection on cassette as well - it came out in 1983, and is titled Hot Tracks... ;)
