Subject: RUSH - Recomendations needed

Written By: Hair on 01/20/02 at 03:47 p.m.

Everything I have heard from Rush on the radio, I have liked.  I don't own any of their albums but if I were to buy one, what would you'll recommend?  I have heard some opera-like stuff that I didn't care for but I'll stay open-minded.

Don't let anyone talk you into "Tom Sawyer". It is SERIOUSLY overplayed in the rock classics stations. I'll leave that at that. Nice to see you again, Hair!  ;)

I said, "I like the ones that I hear on the radio."  Thanks anyway.  By the way, you make me all sticky.  :P

I'm such a dope.  :P  I didn't even read the body of your message. I've never done that before - reply to a message just by the subject header. I'm tired. Must go to sleep now. BTW, On making you sticky - It's my job.  ;)

"Signals" is a must have.
Enjoy!

If you want a good sampling, I recommend "Retrospective" and "Chronicles". Both have a good mixture of the radio favorites and some of the more eclectic cuts.

IMHO the two best Rush albums are 2112 and Moving Pictures (it has TS on it).....you can't go wrong with the Greatest Hits compilations though if you love the radio hits. :D

It's nice to see people enjoying Canadian music!

I am not a big Rush fan, but their song "Throw the Bones" is one of my favorites from the group.

My best friend is one of the biggest Rush fans I've ever met so I've listened to a fair bit of it.  If you're looking to start you might want to check out Chronicles.  It's a 2 cd set so you get a lot of music and many of the songs on it are played on the radio so you'll probably be familiar with a number of them.  In addition, Getty Lee (the singer) released a solo album last year that was quite good as well.

...then stay away from their 70s material like Hemispheres, 2112, Rush, A Farewell To Kings, Caress Of Steel, and Fly By Night (even thought the title song is pretty popular). Their 80s stuff is pretty theatrical, but is not an elongated 18 minute operatic stanza. Quite synthy (Geddy Lee is pretty good at that). Their lyrics improve as they went further in the 80s. Their 90s stuff is a mish-mash of good and so-so material, but Test For Echo, Counterparts, and Roll The Bones all have stuff NOT included in the Retrospective and Chronicle comps. They also have a few live albums, but the only one I can think of is Different Stages (or is it Different Levels? I forgot...). They have like 17 albums total and they will soon release a new one after years of not doing anything on the scene (mainly due to Neal Pert's tragedy with wife and child...).

A little OT:
Geddy Lee is WAAAAYYY uglier than David Coverdale.
Someone had said David Coverdale was the ugliest guy in rock.  I can't remember who said it though?

Really? David Coverdale? Wow...I'd have thought Ozzy was uglier than DC...I mean, DC's nailing Tawny Kitaen...I guess it's the $$?? Hmmmmmmmm..it all seems weird to me....but getting back to RUSH...Geddy is commonly known up here in the Great White North as the "Noser Hoser" because of his excessively large proboscis :D He's a very funny man though and I think his best work is on Bob & Doug Mackenzie's "Take Off to the Great White North"....

Actually that's "ROLL the Bones," and it's a pretty good album. "Permanent Waves," and "2112," are also decent. The only parts of the title track of that one the radio stations tend to play are "Overture" and "The Temples of Syrinx." Get the album and you'll hear the song in it's entirety. Oh, and listen to Wicked Lester's advice too. ;) ;D

Personally I like rush but don't own any of thier work.  I was more into Van Halen and they were huge rivals.  I have heard only good things about "2112", hope that helps!
