A New Year's celebration in New Orleans was ruined by someone driving a truck into a crowd killing 10 and injuring at least 30 others. It's similar to the incident at a Christmas market in Germany a few weeks ago.

Here is his full statement in English.
"Every morning I've woken up as prime minister, I've been inspired by the resilience, the generosity, and the determination of Canadians. It is the driving force of every single day I have the privilege of serving in this office.
That is why, since 2015, I have fought for this country - for you - to strengthen and grow the middle class.
Why we rallied to support each other through the pandemic, to advance reconciliation, to defend free trade on this continent, to stand strong with Ukraine and our democracy.
And to fight climate chance and get our economy ready for the future. We are at a critical moment in the world.
My friends, as you all know, I am a fighter.
Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians. I care deeply about this country. And I will always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians.
And the fact is, despite best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralysed for months after what has been the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history.
That's why, this morning I advised the governor general that we need a new session of parliament. She has granted this request and the house will now be prorogued until March 24.
Over the holidays, I've also had a chance to reflect and have had long talks with my family about our future.
Throughout the course of my career, any success I have personally achieved has been because of their support and with their encouragement.
So last night over dinner, I told my kids about the decision that I'm sharing with you today.
I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process. Last night I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process.
This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.
The Liberal Party of Canada is an important institution in the history of our great country and democracy. A new prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party will carry its values and ideals into that next election.
I am excited to see the process unfold in the months ahead.
We were elected for the third time in 2021 to strengthen the economy post-pandemic and advance Canada's interests in a complicated world, and that is exactly the job that I, and we, will continue to do for Canadians."

The biggest of these, known as the Palisades fire, has so far burnt through more than 2,900 acres - fanned by gusty winds and dry conditions. The map below shows how rapidly the blaze spread, intensifying in a matter of hours.

Written By: Philip Eno on 01/09/25 at 6:42 am
The pound has fallen to its lowest level in over a year, while UK borrowing costs have surged to their highest for 16 years.
Economists have warned that the rising costs could lead to further tax increases or spending cuts as the government tries to meet its self-imposed rule not to borrow to fund day-to-day spending.
In response to an urgent question in the Commons, Treasury minister Darren Jones said there was "no need for an emergency intervention" in financial markets.
Markets "continue to function in an orderly way" and movements in government borrowing costs were being driven by "a wide range of international and domestic factors," he added.

The firefighters out there are some of the best in the nation. There were over 8,000 wildfires in California in 2024. You read that correctly-over 8,000! 1,050,012 acres burned.
This fire is different. Most of the others were in forested land with communities scattered about. This is in a densely populated area. The fires are driven by the extreme Santa Ana winds which are pretty much at Hurricane levels. And I heard the winds are constinatly shifting. And then the fact that the area is under a severe drought. There hadn't been any rainfall for Aug-Oct. Nov only received 0.14 and Dec received 0.02 making a deficit of -2.24. (According to laalmanic.com)
To answer your question about containing it, the winds should be dying down soon which will help but rain would really help but that is not in the forcast anytime soon. So it is up to the brave men & woman firefighters who will battle this and hopefully be able to put these fires out.

While no original manuscripts were lost, the music owned by Belmont Music Publishing had been the main collection of scores rented out to orchestras and musicians.
The director of the American Symphony Orchestra, Leon Botstein, said these had been an "indispensable resource" for performing musicians.

Subject: Restaurant charges $120 to add pineapple on pizza
Written By: Voiceofthe70s on 01/15/25 at 9:18 am
A restaurant in Norwich, England is charging the equivalent of $120 to add pineapple to pizza. This is not because it is a high priced restaurant, but rather to deter people from the heinous practice of ordering pineapple on pizza. I heartily agree with this tactic. Pineapple does NOT belong on pizza. That is my stance and I'm
sticking to it.
CNN reports:
There are few moments as controversial in food history as the decision by a Canadian chef in the 1960s to put tinned pineapple on top of a ham pizza. When Sam Panapoulos created what he and his brother-slash-partner-in-crime dubbed Hawaiian pizza, it was a breach of Italian culinary protocol that would echo down through the ages.
Some six decades later, the question of whether pineapple belongs on pizza is a topic that divides nations, communities and even families.
Now a pizzeria in Norwich, England, has nailed its colors to the mast by introducing pineapple to its online delivery menu — but at the princely sum of £100 (around $122). “Yeah, for £100 you can have it. Order the champagne too! Go on you Monster!,” jeers the new menu listing for Hawaiian on Lupa Pizza’s account on UK food delivery app Deliveroo. It sits alongside uncontroversial classics such as Napoli, Meatball and Pepperoni, all retailing for $17 or less. “I say ‘no’ to pineapple,” Lupa’s head chef Quin Jianoran tells CNN Travel by phone.
The Panapoulous brothers mixed “Chinese sweet and sour flavors with a traditional Italian product,” he explains. “it’s very controversial, because people literally love it and people hate it. We’re just taking a stance.”

A new, fast-moving wildfire has erupted in Los Angeles County, prompting tens of thousands of people to evacuate a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history.
The Hughes fire ignited 45 miles (72km) north-west of the city of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, near Castaic Lake in a mountainous area that borders several residential areas and schools.
It grew to more than 10,000 acres in several hours on Wednesday, fuelled by winds and dry brush. No homes or businesses have been damaged, and officials expressed confidence about getting it under control.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has backed a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport as part of a fresh plan to get the UK's sluggish economy growing.
She said Heathrow expansion, which has been delayed for decades over environmental concerns, would "make Britain the world's best connected place to do business".
In a wide-ranging speech to business leaders, she also backed expansions at Luton and Gatwick airports, as well as a "growth corridor" between Oxford and Cambridge, which she claimed could be "Europe's Silicon Valley".
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said the plans had mostly been stolen from her party but claimed that Labour's new employment laws would destroy any prospect of growth.

For our amusement I'm offering some speculation here on my intuitive feeling on whether some of the regular posters like or dislike pineapple on pizza. We'll see if I'm correct.
Nally-likes
Howard-probably doesn't like
Cat-probably likes
Eno-probably doesn't like
Whistledog-likes (pineapple on pizza was invented by a Canadian after all)
American Girl-could go either way
Lyricboy-doesn't like
I know I am a little late to the game but I don't mind pineapple on pizza as a once in a while thing.
My go-to is extra cheese, mushrooms, onions, & black olives. It was a compromise between Carlos & me. I had to have the extra cheese & mushrooms & he wanted the onions & black olives. Now, I am just used to ordering it like that.

An artwork by Banksy has been removed from the side of a building in west London.
A statement on behalf of the building's owner Boss & Co. gunmakers, said they made the decision as part of refurbishment works that were "essential for the long-term future of the property".
The goat painting on Kew Green, Kew was the first in an animal-based series of works by Banksy across London last summer.
The building owners said the work was "carefully" removed to "ensure its conservation and protection" and when completed they would "explore options for its future display".

Likely so that nobody can use that image to try to counterfeit stamps. Just the way a sample of a check might say "void" or play money might say "not legal tender".
