Subject: Things 2024 will be remembered for

Written By: batfan2005 on 01/06/24 at 7:41 am

The year just started but the first week has had a long going on. Here are some potentials:

- Earthquake in Japan on the first day, and then the airline collision at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on the second day of the year
- The bombings at Qasem Soleimani's grave on the 4 year anniversary of his death
- Steamboat Willie/Mickey Mouse horror movie

- The bombings at Qasem Soleimani's grave on the 4 year anniversary of his death
- Steamboat Willie/Mickey Mouse horror movie
Steamboat Willie, a 1928 short film featuring early non-speaking versions of Mickey and Minnie, is widely seen as the moment that transformed Disney's fortunes and made cinema history. Their images are now available to the public in the US, after Disney's copyright expired. It means creatives like cartoonists can now rework and use the earliest versions of Mickey and Minnie.

Madonna taking a minor tumble won't even be remembered beyond this news cycle, let alone in the future.  If she had sustained serious injury however, that would have been a different story. After all, she is elderly and could have broken a hip.

It's barely big news even in this news cycle, as it's pretty much about Navalny's death.

I still think "Yes, And?" by Ariana Grande might still be one of the songs the year could be remembered for. Didn't have the chart performance as I expected as it was #1 only for a week and then dropped down, but still has potential to bounce back. Anyhow it's popular for social media reels.

Now that we're near the end of the first quarter, here is what I have listed so far as potentials:

- Beyonce's "Texas Hold 'Em"
- "Yes, And?" and "We Can't Be Friends" by Ariana Grande
- Dune: Part Two
- The Crocus theater attack in Moscow
- Haiti?
- The Francis Scoot Key Bridge collapse Maryland (this one I'm not so sure about, it's just been in the recent news cycle)
- Donald Trump's sneakers
- The world "unhinged" seems to be the word of the year so far. Maybe it's older but I see it used everywhere on social media now.

I think it's remembered for more than being the event of 1995. It's listed on UMKS Law School's list of all time famous trials. Right up there with the trial of Jesus of Nazareth, the Salem Witch Trials, Lizzie Borden, Scopes "Monkey" Trial,  Sacco & Vanzetti, Charles Manson, the Chicago Seven/Eight and more.

See it here:

https://famous-trials.com/

Although, in this day an age of the 24 hour news cycle,  it just may be that the OJ trial, something so big that even workplaces brought in televisions so people could watch, is fading from memory. It's not really on the radar of Millennials or Gen Z, and even Howard posted here a few days ago that he didn't remember what the famous OJ car chase was for.

I think Donald Trump's trial could be added to that list of famous trials.

For OJ's death and this year however, he will be one of the notable death's of this year but that's more of a separate subcategory. Only a handful of celebrity deaths are remembered in infamy, like Michael Jackson's in 2009 for example.

The song "360" from that album is a candidate for being the song of the summer, along with "Espresso" by Sarah Carpenter, "Million Dollar Baby" by Tony Richman, "I Had Some Help" by Post Malone w/Morgan Wallen, "Not Like Us" by Kendrick Lamar, "Houdini" by Eminem "Lunch" by Billie Eilish, "Fortnite" by Taylor Swift and her Tortured Poets Department album have been among the Top 10 going into the summer months. Also Ariana Grande was mentioned earlier in this thread with "Yes, And?" and "We Can't Be Friends", and more recently "The Boy is Mine".

I thought Playboy was long gone, but I guess it exists in a nominal fashion online. There was a famous old joke, "I buy Playboy for the articles", but, truth be told, the articles and especially the interviews were excellent. Playboy interviewed Martin Luther King, you know. They interviewed Albert Schweitzer, for heaven's sake. They interviewed Jimmy Carter, Bob Dylan (twice) and John Lennon & Yoko Ono, among many other luminaries. In fact, the John & Yoko interview was so exhaustive that it was later issued as a book.

Correct. He was interviewed by Playboy while running for president in 1976. The exact quote was ""I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times." The quote--as would be said today-"went viral". People were not used to such honesty from a presidential candidate. But it was a refreshing honesty and he got elected.

Hailey (the Hawk Tuah girl) has reportedly turned down an offer to work with Playboy, and has said that she will never open up an Only Fans page.  :P

Why should she? She's probably in her teens or maybe even in her early twenties,If she don't want to then that's her decision, she don't want to be known for the person who made that spitting sound.

Yup. At the time I was so naive to think that Iran was afraid of Reagan which is why they were released about 2 minutes after he became president. I later learned differently. I once met someone who worked on the botched rescue attempt and was told that there were so many security breaches that you could drive a Mac truck through it. I was not told who did the leaking.

Side note. I remember telling someone on Jan. 20th, that there was so much history being made and we didn't have to learn about it. I also remember they announced over the P.A. system at school that the hostages were airborne and the entire school exploded with cheers.

Around that time, my college professor, who was an acquaintance of The Shah (interviewed him multiple times, but his writings about the Shah were far from complimentary), was officially designated as an “enemy of the people” by the new Islamic poo-bahs in Iran. In short, being "demure" means being cutesy, clean and mindful; not drawing attention to yourself; not being messy or loud; and getting things done and going about your day with quiet confidence and gentility.

A few days early but I'll go ahead and do the end of Q3 update. Here's what I had at the end of the first half of 2024:

- The Trump Trial
- Biden vs Trump rematch elections
- Hunter Biden Trial
- P. Diddy case
- Justin Timberlake's mugshot
- The Hawk Tuah girl
- Beyonce's "Texas Hold 'Em"
- Ariana Grande's "Eternal Sunshine" album including "Yes, And?", "We Can't Be Friends", and "The Boy is Mine"
- Charlie XCX's "brat" album
- Sarah Carpenter's "Espresso"
- Dua Lipa's "Illusions"
- Taylor Swift's "Tortured Poets Department"
- Dune: Part Two
- The Fallout series on Amazon Prime
- Pat Sajak retiring from Wheel of Fortune
- The eclipse and Aurora Borealis
- Boeing aircraft incidents

- So now it's Harris vs. Trump, and anything Trump related including his felony charges and two assassination attempts. Also JD Vance.
- Hunter Biden Trial maybe, but not quite sure
- P. Diddy case for sure
- JT's mugshot maybe but probably not. Was more like a short-term social media fad
- The Hawk Tuah girl definitely
- In music: Beyonce's "Texas Hold 'Em", Sarah Carpenter's "Espresso", Billie Eilish's "Birds of a Feather", Chappelle Roan, and Charlie XCX's "brat girl summer"
- In film: Dune: Part Two, Twisters, and maybe Deadpool & Wolverine. Joker 2 and Wicked from Q4 have potentials.
- Probably not Fallout but Shogun is probably the top series of the year
- Pat Sajak leaving the Wheel probably
- The eclipse and Aurora Borealis probably
- The Beoing aircraft incidents probably

To add:
- The Paris Summer Olympics with Simone Biles and the Australian breakdancer (Ray-Gun)
- The Southport, UK incident and the protests/riots that followed
- The use of the word "demure"
- Brocolli haircuts

At the same time I can't believe we ONLY have 3 more months. The last few months especially have been flying by. I also think it's been a relatively calm year, at least for the 2020's/post-COVID era. The two Trump assassination attempts and his felony convictions are the only things that were crazy, and election years are usually crazy. Other than that it's mostly just been continuations of things that started in previous years such as the wars in Israel/Gaza/Lebanon and Russia-Ukraine. Just been escalated. Also COVID is still around.

That’s right; I remember it affected two of the Braves’ home games against the Mets; both of said games were played on the last day of September (the day after Closing Day) to determine the teams’ seeding for the wildcard round, as well as the fate of the Arizona Diamondbacks (who would have gotten a playoff spot if either the Braves or Mets swept the doubleheader, but that didn’t happen so they were out).

I think so, because it's what I call a "new kind of murder". This is the first time somebody has killed the CEO of an insurance company because they were pissed off about their insurance coverage. (Everybody in the US is pissed off about insurance coverage, by the way). Previous examples of a "new" kind of murder were Princess Diana (death by paparazzi) and John Lennon, which was the first assassination of a major rock star. Prior to Lennon, it was generally political figures that were assassinated.

Although at this point it might go into something that 2025 will be remembered for since the memorial services will be likely after the New Year.
