The year just started but here are some songs that just released on Friday that I would consider 2024 songs. Now my go-to for new music is the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify.
This one has a retro oldies sound:

Singer Elvis Presley is set to be brought back to life virtually as part of a new immersive concert experience. Elvis Evolution will use AI and feature holographic projections of the star, created from thousands of his personal photos and home-video footage. The show is set to open in London in November before moving to Las Vegas, Berlin and Tokyo. It follows the success of Abba Voyage, a virtual concert with avatars of the Swedish pop band.

I'm really concerned about old Hollywood actors - not just the ones that were stars *at the time* but those who were not then but have been vindicated by history and are popular in 2023.
The ones with no descendants or no other family left.
Actors that sing?

I mean the wider issue of deepfake and vocal synth and famous dead people.
Rex Harrison may now find himself doing bit parts after all (the opposite of what he said when offered Count Witte in "Nicholas and Alexandra").
This is an music in 2024 topic not acting.

This song when I first heard it I thought it was weird and ominous, but it started to grow on me. It sounds like something that could be in the Dune: Part Two movie, which is funny because one of his songs from his 2021 album had a beat that sounded like those thumpers that call the sandworms when I listened to it literally the next day after watching Dune: Part One.
Had to post the clean version since Kanye isn't exactly doing Christian/gospel music much now.

Ariana Grande's new album "Eternal Sunshine" was disappointing. Really "Yes, And?" was the only banger on there while maybe two other tracks were just decent. Most of the songs on there were too slow for my taste. I liked her previous album "Positions" from 2020 a lot better, and her 2018 album "Sweetener" even more.

Meanwhile Ariana Grande's "We Can't Be Friends" is #1 in the Billboard chart this week, as his her album Eternal Sunshine. Her "Yes, And?" song is back in the top 10.
Justin Timberlake's album "Everything I Thought It Was" was probably not what he thought it would be. For the first time in his career his album didn't make the Top 10. If only he released it two years ago it pretty much only had Harry Styles to compete with, but his previous album from 2018 wasn't that impressive either.

Jennifer Lopez cancels summer tour due to low ticket sales.
https://variety.com/2024/music/news/jennifer-lopez-cancels-tour-1236021391/
According to Variety:
The news does not come as a total surprise, as the tour has been beset with reports of poor ticket sales and many unsold seats on ticketing websites. Seating charts for multiple dates showed very poor sales. After canceling seven dates of the tour — her first North American jaunt in five years — in April Lopez quietly renamed it to apparently broaden its scope, changing it from “This Is Me… Now” to “This Is Me… Live | The Greatest Hits.” Lopez initially announced the trek in February to coincide with the release of her latest album “This Is Me… Now” and its accompanying two films, but she quietly canceled some of its dates last month in cities like Cleveland and Nashville, likely due to poor sales. The rebrand suggested a pivot from a tour focusing on the new album’s songs to one spanning her discography, a move that was presumably intended to entice listeners who didn’t connect with her latest material.

Madonna hit with new lawsuit alleging unwanted exposure to sexual content
https://ew.com/madonna-lawsuit-unwanted-exposure-sexual-content-distress-celebration-tour-8656095
Entertainment Weekly reports:
California concert attendee Justen Lipeles is the latest to sue the pop star over her "Celebration" tour. Lipeles alleges that Madonna concert attendees were subjected to "pornography without warning," including "topless women on stage simulating sex acts" in an uncomfortable, sweltering environment. He claims that Madonna demanded the air conditioning be turned off and he became physically ill in the heat. Lipeles also cites Madonna's tardiness, a complaint at the center of various other lawsuits filed against the singer in recent years. Lipeles alleges that she took the stage after 10 p.m., when the show was marketed with an 8:30 p.m. start time.
"Forcing consumers to wait hours in hot, uncomfortable arenas and subjecting them to pornography without warning is demonstrative of Madonna's flippant disrespect for her fans," Lipeles' complaint says, claiming that when Madonna at last appeared on stage, she lip-synched even though attendees had paid for a live performance.

It's almost expected these days for the pop singers to lip synch on stage. It's when the rock bands that do it, then it becomes an issue. She's full of it. It wasn't supposed to be a parody, it was supposed to be serious. When she saw the backlash she tried to do damage control with this "parody" business.
1) What kind of nitwit puts out a feminist anthem written by four men and produced by another man who is an accused rapist? (And accused by Ke$ha no less).
2) What kind of super nitwit, in this day and age, puts out a "parody" of a feminist anthem written by four men and produced by another man who is an accused rapist? (And accused by Ke$ha no less).
Either way, she's out of touch and cannot read the room. She's yesterday's news.

This is what noted culture commentator Bob Lefsetz had to say about the Katy Perry debacle:
After a couple of stiff records decided to give the audience the girl power anthems she’d built her name on. But everybody rejected it. I haven’t seen backlash this big…EVER! This is what happens when you live in a bubble.
So who are the Katy Perry fans?
A certain demo of women. No longer young, not in the active group participating on social media. And that’s how you drive a hit, on social media. Most Katy Perry fans are out of the loop. And there are a limited number of them. Perry could not say no, she appeared everywhere, she stood for nothing so much as…stardom. And that’s not enough.
So Katy Perry completely miscalculated. She’ll ultimately lick her wounds and climb back into the hole she came out of. This is what J.Lo did, this is what all the pop stars of yore do when they’re confronted with the fact that the game has changed. But if she was smart, Perry would release new music almost instantly. That was more raw, not made with legendary producers. Then again, can she make the music alone?
It all comes down to talent. Artistry. We’re back to the basics. Because there’s just too much junk, too much low grade stuff trying to fill the pop pipeline. Odds are you’re going to fail. But especially if you build up the hype, if you’ve got us waiting to see what you’re going to do.

This isn't 1985. That's an outdated concept. Playboy doesn't really exist anymore. There is no print magazine. It has a nominal presence online (behind a paywall), but doesn't attract much attention. It's an outdated model. Exactly what Perry is currently accused of. Using an outdated model.

Call me crazy, but I actually liked the song -- completely unaware that Dr. Luke was involved. I recognized it was a satire. The chorus is extremely catchy. Honestly, I'm just glad Katy is back. "Chained to the Rhythm" (and with it the Witness era) was unfairly rejected. Maybe "Bon Appetit" and "Swish Swish" aren't her best, maybe "Woman's World" isn't her best, but at least give "Chained to the Rhythm" its due.

I admit I like it too and it's catchy, albeit has a very generic sound that's been overused for years if not more than a decade now.

At least her new single sounds better than Woman's World:

Speaking of Ke$ha, she dropped a single about a month ago that's pretty catchy:

Upon hearing both songs more than once, I actually like this one better. The lyrics are too simple, but she wrote it for her daughter. "Woman's World" is better when it's divorced from its campy music video, but at least "Lifetimes" takes itself more seriously. This feels like her true comeback single, even if nothing becomes of it other than an environmental inestigation.

I didn't pay attention to the lyrics but it sounds catchy the way she does the downward inflection with her voice at the end of each line of the main hook.

Subject: Lost Chopin waltz unearthed after almost 200 years
Written By: Philip Eno on 10/29/24 at 2:21 am
A new piece of music believed to be by the Polish composer Frederic Chopin has been discovered nearly 200 years after it was first written.
The unknown waltz was unearthed in the vault of the Morgan Library and Museum in New York.
The rare manuscript - dated between 1830 and 1835 - was discovered by curator Robinson McClellan while he was cataloguing new collections.
He then worked with a leading Chopin expert to authenticate the score.
It is not signed by Chopin, but the handwriting includes his distinctive bass clef.
The waltz has minor errors in rhythm and notation but Mr McClellan said he is sure that Chopin is behind it.

The new track will combine different versions of the charity single that have been recorded over the years, to mark the 40th anniversary of the original.
An all-star supergroup first performed the song in 1984, and it has since been re-recorded three times to mark the fifth, 20th and 30th anniversaries, with some of the most popular artists from each era taking part.
The new version will be released later this month and will feature on a forthcoming compilation to mark the anniversary.
