London Tube workers are to go on strike in the new year in a dispute about pay, the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has announced. Union members who work on different parts of the Underground will walk out on separate days between 5 and 12 January. It comes after RMT members voted overwhelmingly to take industrial action over a 5% pay offer. Transport for London (TfL) said the pay rise was "the most we can afford".

New "Star Wars" film to be directed by two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12924179/This-movie-Disneys-biggest-flop-Star-Wars-fans-say-female-led-installment-destined-fail-2015-comments-feminist-director-saying-goal-make-men-uncomfortable.html

Exerpts:

Star Wars fans and conservatives have jumped on comments by the director of a new female-led film in the franchise, leading them to believe it will be another 'woke' flop from Disney.

Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has declared 'it's about time' a woman shaped a Star Wars film as she is set to become the first woman and the first person of color to direct a feature film for the franchise.

The film Star Wars: New Jedi Order is set after the most recent Star Wars sequel, 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, and will be centered on Daisy Ridley's character Rey.

However, many have unearthed comments made on a panel Obaid-Chinoy did with Meryl Streep and Jon Stewart that has provoked outrage over Disney prioritizing politics over good filmmaking.

'I like to make men uncomfortable. I enjoy making men uncomfortable,' she said during the panel, which she participated in after winning the Oscar for a documentary about acid attacks against Pakistani women.

It is important to be able to look into the eyes of a man and say, I am here, and recognize that, and recognize that I am working to bring something that makes you uncomfortable, and it should make you uncomfortable,' she added.

Immediately, people jumped on the repeated comments, in addition to Obaid-Chinoy saying 'it's about time' for a female-led Star Wars film.

The tale I heard is that when he lived in New York he carried a Greek newspaper around with him. It probably worked for a while.

Marc Bolan, known for stretching the truth, used to tell the tale that as a youth he lived in Paris with "a wizard'", replete with all kinds of strange and occult adventures.  He never really did, he just took a weekend trip there in his teens with an actor friend, which later expanded into the "wizard" tale.

This just shows how much things have changed. When I first started going to concerts in the very early 70s it was unheard of for them to start anywhere near "on time". The show may have been listed as starting at 8 PM or 8:30 PM and the band would saunter on at 11 or so. People KNEW this, it was just the way things operated back then. People would generally sit and pass joints along the whole row of seats before the band came on and the air would be thick with it. Enormous wine bottles were often passed around in a similarly communal way. And, yeah, frisbees were thrown, but I always found that to be silly at a concert.

But times have changed. Madonna doesn't have any young fans, they're all in their 50s and beyond. They want the show to start and end promptly. In today's world and at my age, so do I. It seems to me like Madonna was trying to bring back that old  kind of style, but it just isn't happening.

It seems to me like Madonna was trying to bring back that old  kind of style, but it just isn't happening.
...and at Woodstock in 1969, Jimi Hendrix was the last to perform at the festival, taking the stage at 8:30 Monday morning due to delays caused by the rain. By that point, the audience had fallen to about 30,000 from its estimated peak of 450,000. Many of them left during Hendrix's performance, having waited to simply catch a glimpse of him.

That's actually a completely different thing than we were talking about. Woodstock was a three day festival that went into a fourth day at which Jimi Hendrix came on at the end. People had been there for upwards of four days by then.

We were talking about a concert scheduled to start at 8 PM at which the artist came on at least two hours late and how, in my early 70s day of concertgoing this was an accepted and expected thing, a hip thing, and indeed part of the culture. The concert business is enormously different now. The concertgoers are enormously older, more affluent, and want things on time and their way. Judging from the recent concerts I have been to, the audience doesn't even care about the performer anymore. They look at their phones the whole time and constantly get up from their seats and come and go.

Well known commentator Bob Lefsetz has this to say about the Madonna kerfuffle in his latest blog:

It used to be exotic. A band from across the land, across the sea, was in your own hometown. And it tended to be your own hometown, you didn’t board flights to go to a show, you might drive a few hours, but that was it. So to see David Bowie in person, whew! You pinched yourself that you were in the presence of greatness, of stardom. But today stardom is all over the internet, 24-7. Not only can you see pictures of your heroes, read their words, you can even watch the show you’re going to see online beforehand, on YouTube.

So if you’re trying to titillate the audience, get them ready, foaming at the mouth, you’re out of touch. They’re just waiting for you to go on. It’s not much different from Vegas. Do your show so they can leave and get back to if not gambling, their regular life.

The Stones were legendary for going on stage late. The anticipation was out of control. When they took the stage heads exploded, metaphorically, at least.

Madonna is 65. People still want to see her, in droves, but the experience is different. They want to relive their memories. It’s no longer cutting edge. Isn’t Madonna finally doing her greatest hits, to ensure that she can sell tickets at prodigious prices?

Everybody comes down to earth, it’s the songs that remain in heaven.

All-in-all, Jimi Hendrix did come onto the stage late to perform.

Also, there is a song by Madonna called "Waiting"...

Jimi Hendrix came on later than scheduled at a four day festival of half a million people which had very little in the way of logistics or organization.

To compare it to an artist intentionally coming on several hours late for a scheduled performance in a venue in a time when it was culturally acceptable (1970s) and when it is not culturally acceptable (now) is apples and oranges.

I think that the concert differences between then and now are quite an interesting cultural phenomenon.

Excessively Farting Passenger Reportedly Causes American Airlines Flight to Turn Around

https://people.com/gassy-passenger-farted-removed-from-flight-airplane-8548108

Excerpt:

A flight was reportedly delayed after the plane ran into some unexpected flatulence: an excessively gassy passenger who had to be removed.

The Jan. 14 incident was documented by Texas-based reddit user lamgalatx, who wrote about the smelly situation on an American Airlines flight from Phoenix to Austin. American Airlines did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.  “I was seated near the row where this situation occurred,” the passenger recalled in the r/Austin subreddit. While the airplane was still at the gate, the documentarian says they saw and heard an “audibly disgruntled” and “maybe hungover” man. He reportedly exclaimed, “You thought that was rude? Well how about this smell,“ and proceeded to loudly pass gas.

But the transgression didn’t end there.

“The man who just purposefully farted moments ago decides to loudly and condescendingly say ‘Yeah, everybody, let’s just eat the smelliest food possible all at the same time,’” the poster wrote, seemingly referring to a scent unrelated to his own actions.

In response, a man in the next row reportedly remarked, “If you don’t like it you can fly private,” to which the gassy passenger replied, “That’s so f---ing rude.”

Another passenger chimed in, “I think we’d all agree you’re the rude one here,’” the witness added.

The spat continues with the flatulent flyer responding, “That’s just so low class,” before another nearby passenger said, “Well you’re back here in economy with the rest of us.”
The scuffle caused the plane, which had left the gate and been moving toward the runway for takeoff, to stop and return to the gate, according to the redditor’s post.

At this point, the flight crew had to get involved.

“We get back to the gate and a flight attendant comes back and informs fartman that he will not be staying on this flight. He simply replies, ‘I don’t understand,’ and she tells him they’ll talk about it off the plane,” the witness said, concluding the post by praising American Airline’s actions.

“He gets up, grabs his bag and quietly exits the plane. We all breathed a sigh of relief when he was removed, I think most people were on edge about what he may say or do next. The trip was only delayed by 15-30 minutes, so all in all I think American handled it swiftly."

Frozen iguanas are a phenomenon in Florida. What about frozen alligators?

www.palmbeachpost.com/story/news/local/2024/01/24/facts-frozen-alligators-iguanas-florida-north-caroline-texas/72337265007/

Excerpts:

In a captivating display of nature's resilience, videos and photos of frozen alligators in North Carolina and Texas have taken social media by storm. Dubbed "gatorcicles," these reptiles are seen with their snouts and mouths sticking out, sparking a mix of fear and amazement online.

While the sight may be alarming, experts assure that there's no need to fret. The alligators are not dead; rather, they are exhibiting a survival instinct. As temperatures drop, alligators in the South employ a rarely observed adaptation — a state known as brumation, the reptilian equivalent of mammal hibernation.

The Swamp Park, a tourist attraction in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, reassured the public in several posts that the frozen alligators are not in danger. An employee explained in a video that when it gets too cold, alligators instinctively tilt their noses up, keeping them out of the water to prevent suffocation.

Unlike hibernation, brumation allows reptiles to experience physiological changes similar to hibernation but move about on warmer days. During brumation, alligators become lethargic, with a slowed metabolic rate, and they do not eat. However, they continue to drink to avoid dehydration, according to the South Carolina Aquarium.

n a similar vein, frozen iguanas in cold Florida weather have also gained attention for their unique responses. Like alligators, iguanas experience a temporary paralysis in extremely cold temperatures, causing them to appear frozen. However, they can recover once the temperature rises, showcasing the diverse ways reptiles adapt to their environments in the face of temperature extremes.

The Louvre said the work was behind protective glass and was not damaged. Video shows two female protesters wearing T-shirts that read "food counterattack" throwing the liquid.

That's disgusting!  >:(

Depending on how it was farmed, pumpkin may be sustainable, but the canned pumpkin soup they threw likely is not.

From what I’ve read, the lass did not know that her boyfriend was married.

I wonder just how she was naturalized?  It is EXTREMELY difficult to become a naturalized Japanese citizen. There are third-generation Koreans whose ancestors were absconded to Japan during WW2, who are nevertheless not recognized as Japanese citizens even though they are the second generation born in Japan.

I had a boss who almost got himself arrested at the USA border 15 years ago. When he was asked for his citizenship, he claimed to be a dual USA-Japan citizen. Soon as I heard that BS come out of his mouth, I knew there was gonna be trouble.

Unfortunately Japan doesn't recognize dual citizenship. Otherwise I'd do it. Really the only hope is to be married to a Japanese national, that is to become a permanent resident and not even a citizen. Also since my mother is Japanese, there might be a chance although I'm not sure at this age.

All I can say is, for on a UK passport, you can travel to Japan for tourism or business for up to 90 days. You will get a visa in your passport on arrival, and you do not need to apply before you travel, but as I learnt several years back, you have to commerce your journey to Japan from your homeland, hence London for me. We wanted to fly to Japan from the Philippines, and as I am a UK passport holder I had to obey by the rules of travelling visas.

But a Met Office report for UK Border Force suggests there were more days in 2023 than in 2022 when migrants were unlikely to cross due to the weather. Actor Wil Wheaton apparently was not amused:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/wil-wheaton-larry-david-elmo-attack-abused-1235819558/

Wil Wheaton has unloaded on Larry David for the Curb Your Enthusiasm star’s on-air Elmo attack.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation actor posted an intense 900-word essay on Facebook about the viral stunt, where David throttled the ever-cheerful and child-like Sesame Street icon live on NBC’s Today during a segment on mental health, and then told viewers “somebody had to do it.” David was prodded into apologizing for the incident, but he did so seemingly reluctantly and with a smile.

Wheaton had a strong reaction to the footage and revealed he was abused in a similar way growing up. His rant has made some reexamine last week’s incident — which was largely greeted with amusement online — while others are mocking the actor as “profanely oversensitive.”

And then Wheaton really went off on David.

“What the f--- is wrong with that guy?” he wrote. “Elmo is, like, the best friend to multiple generations of children. In the Sesame Street universe, ELMO IS A CHILD, who is currently putting mental health and caring for others in the spotlight. What an asshole. What a stupid, self-centered, tone deaf a--h---… Larry David strikes me as a person who mocks and belittles people who are vulnerable and sensitive, and enjoys being cruel, because he feels untouchable … First of all, you aren’t even in the segment, but you just decided to barge in and draw focus because … why? You couldn’t stand that a puppet brought people together in a meaningful way that you can’t? You couldn’t stand that your appearance on national television to promote your wildly successful series was delayed for a few seconds while the adults talked about mental health? You wanted to manufacture a viral moment where everyone gets to see what an a--h-- you are, so they’ll tune in and watch you portray an a--h--- in the last season of your show that celebrates how great it is to be an a--h without ever experiencing the consequences of being an a--h--?”

And he just goes on on  on and on from there.

The article continues:

Wheaton’s achingly sincere post has drawn support from some corners of the internet, with one user noting, “If you’re mocking Wil Wheaton for having his PTSD triggered by watching Larry David assault Elmo — who just brought many, many people together in a moment of emotional healing — find that unfollow button and hit it. Go find your fellow garbage people, bond with them.”

Journalist Glenn Greenwald was one of those mocking the actor, writing, “The Star Trek actor and intrepid liberal activist Wil Wheaton posted a screed on Facebook full of rage toward Larry David for viciously assaulting the puppet named Elmo. I debated if it were satire for the first 4 paragraphs. When I realized it wasn’t, I didn’t want it to end.” While another wrote, “Wil Wheaton needs to calm down. My Dad was also an alcoholic and I grew up watching and experiencing abuse, it was total dysfunction. If Larry David grabbed Rainbow Brite and beat the s--- out of her, that would actually be therapeutic for me. Because I would laugh my ass off. Sit tf down, Wil.”

Oregon resident catches rare bubonic plague, likely from their cat: Health officials

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/pet-owner-bubonic-plague-cat-oregon/story?id=107193625

A pet owner has caught a rare case of the bubonic plague, health officials in central Oregon say, and it's believed they may have caught it from their cat.

The Deschutes County Health Services confirmed the case of the plague in a local resident last week. The resident was likely "infected by their symptomatic pet cat," health officials said in a Feb. 7 press release.

"All close contacts of the resident and their pet have been contacted and provided medication to prevent illness," Dr. Richard Fawcett, Deschutes County health officer, said in the release.

he plague spreads to humans or animals through a bite from an infected flea or by contact with an animal sick with the disease, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

To prevent the spread of the plague, Deschutes County Health Services urged residents to avoid all contact with rodents and their potential fleas, and to never touch sick, injured or dead rodents.

Residents should also not allow pets to approach sick or dead rodents or explore rodent burrows, county health officials said.

The plague is a very serious illness but is treatable with antibiotics, usually taken for seven to 14 days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If left untreated, people can still die from the plague, the CDC says.

The bubonic plague dates back to the Middle Ages, when it killed millions in Europe, before the age of antibiotics. At the time, people didn't realize the plague was carried by the fleas who lived on rats.

According to the CDC, the plague was first introduced in the United States in 1900 by rat-infested steamships. It is most common in the western U.S.

I noticed that this morning. My app told me that my session “expired”; then I tried to log back in but it wouldn’t accept my password. So then I requested a password reset, to be sent to my email, and entered the six-digit code from the email, but it gave me the “Something went wrong. Please try again later” message. So I waited maybe 5 minutes or so, and I miraculously got back in again.

Many users were wondering if they got hacked, but a news article I found said otherwise. It was just an outage. I’m glad it wasn’t just me, but I was frustrated to have to jump through a ton of hoops.

Methinks this whole thing is a big fakie (see what I bolded below about revenue), but nonetheless it is a clear indicator of a culture in decline.

Jaw-dropping Kyle & Jackie O Show interview: ‘I identify as a dog’
A woman who identifies as a dog has explained how she does tricks for treats and instead of a boyfriend, she has a “handler”.

A woman who identifies as a dog says she is rewarded with doggie biscuits for good behaviour.

US Twitch streamer Meow Dalyn appeared on The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Thursday to explain her unorthodox lifestyle. She explained to hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson that she identifies as a dalmatian breed, sleeps in a crate and is rewarded for doing tricks with dog treats. “My name is Meow like a cat, but I am a dog,” she declared to the hosts. Jackie ‘O’ was confused by Meow’s name, given she identifies as a canine asking, “Why did you call yourself Meow then?”

Meow explained as a kind of antiphrasis, where you give something the exact opposite to its usual meaning, “It’s kind of like whenever you have a really small dog, like a Chihuahua and you name it Hercules”.

Kyle, meanwhile, tested out a theory by activating a “dog controller” device near the microphone during the conversation. Meow appeared to flinch and said, “I don’t like that.”

Meow, who is “117 dog years” old, said she doesn’t have a boyfriend, instead calling her partner/s “handlers”. She said the handlers feed her and take her on walks. “We practice training, which is one of my favourite things because I get treats.”

Prompted by a question from Jackie ‘O’, Meow admitted to going to the toilet in the backyard on occasions, but she added if it was raining she would “get over myself” and use the “human toilet”.

Acting like a dog is sure to fetch a lot of notice from the public, but Moew said she doesn’t pay much attention to what people think about her because “I’m so in the moment of just being the dog”.

Kyle asked a risque question about sex, prompting Meow to bark in response. “She’s an actual dog!” Kyle declared.

Meow has about 11,000 followers on Twitch and is a Twitch ‘pawtner’ , meaning she gets a larger share of revenue from the Amazon-owned service.

She insists she is serious about identifying as a dog. She’s not a furry, the fandom subculture that involves people dressing up in suits and acting as animals. Instead, she self-classified as an ‘Inumimi ‘, which she defined as a “mut(t)ation somewhere between human and canine”.

And she doesn’t produce any adult content online.

“No. Do not mistake my playful/lewd entertainment style as parasocialised flirtation. Do not mistake my heartfelt encouragement through chat as romantic attraction. I’m not sending secret signals. I do not want to date you,” she wrote in her bio.

I told you there were people who identify as canines. Transpecies, I imagine, is the correct term.

It’s time for us to reject the old stodgy definitions of species.

Subject: New York offers pop up "cry spas"

Written By: Voiceofthe70s on 03/20/24 at 11:11 am

New York now has pop up "cry spas", where people can pay $20 for the privilege of going into a room and crying.

Read it here:

https://nypost.com/2024/03/18/lifestyle/sob-parlour-nycs-first-cry-spa-debuts-whats-it-like/

Excerpts:

Anthony Villiotti, Sob Parlour’s founder, introduced the concept of cathartic wail sessions in the city in November. The six tearful fêtes he’s hosted over the past four months have been held at various locations across Manhattan, including community centers, art galleries and office rental sites.

The 31-year-old Upper West Sider explained to The Post that for $20, Gothamites in need of an emotional release can book a 30-minute appointment in a private “cry room,” where they’re welcome to “come sob on your lunch break and then go right back to work.” But it’s neither group nor individual therapy.
In fact, Villiotti and his team of two staffers ask guests to sign a waiver acknowledging that they won’t be receiving any psychological support or counseling — although Sob Parlour does boast an on-call, licensed therapist who’s able to help if a crying client begins experiencing a mental health crisis. Instead, his fledgling imprint is simply providing folks with a swank and secure setting for turning on the waterworks.

“New Yorkers are so used to struggling through the daily grind, making lemonade out of lemons — without a safe and healthy space for them to cry it out,” said Villiotti, who doubles as a finance executive for a multinational music company.  “Sob Parlour attendees are usually dealing with grief or loss, stress at work or at home,” he revealed. “But the No. 1 reason people come to us for a cry is heartache after experiencing a bad breakup or unrequited love.” In fact, it was a shot to the heart that inspired him to create his wellness venue in December 2022. Getting all choked up while listening to Mariah Carey’s “Whenever You Call” on the StairMaster at Equinox gym, a then-newly jilted Villiotti thought how nice it’d be to end his workout, stop off somewhere for a soothing cry and then move on with his day.

Sure, he could have had a mini-breakdown in a bathroom stall or run home to whimper into a couch pillow. But the millennial wanted a cool, alternative environment that offered him both seclusion and a stylishly unique experience.   “Why not reserve a specific time and place to deliberately cry for its cleansing benefits?” Villiotti reasoned. Esther, who has sniffled and blubbered at a few of Sob Parlour’s pop-ups near Union Square, tells The Post she always feels “refreshed” after letting loose in its cry room. “I deal with a lot of stress on my job,” said the 27-year-old, who works in the Financial District but lives in Park Slope. However, the Brooklynite, who chose not to provide her last name for privacy reasons, says she counts herself lucky to have stumbled across a Sob Parlour ad near her office earlier this year. “I’m not someone who’s going to cry at my desk or in public at a coffee shop,” she explained. “I don’t even like crying at home, because it’s like my peaceful sanctuary. But being in a cry room, with all the amenities, makes me comfortable enough to get it all out in less than a half-hour.”

Not sure if it's related to the Ukraine war or not, but in Moscow there was a terrorist attack in which at least 40 people were killed and 100 injured, from a mass shooting and then explosives were set off at a concert venue.

IIRC, back in ‘02 there was a similar attack by Chechen rebels who took 800 Russians hostage at a Moscow theatre. Russian special forces stormed the place and threw in poison gas and snuffed all 41 Chechens as well as 129 Muscovites.

For this most recent attack, ISIS has claimed credit. I would expect Russian forces in Syria to launch an absolutely brutal counterattack on the Muslim terrorists. Which is the signature feature of Muslim militants. Their shenanigans almost exclusively result in far more Muslim deaths than whoever they imagine their enemies to be. Such as what is happening in Gaza.

The Ukrainians are claiming that Russian special forces launched this attack so as to blame it on The Ukraine.

You would think they would keep it for pure historical value. Even if kept out of sight, or in a case, or a "by appointment only" type of thing for serious scholars or authors. After all, as macabre, grotesque and repulsive as it might be, this was once a practice. Just as today there are museums which display medieval implements of torture, for example. Given that this is Harvard University, methinks there may be an element of wokeness to this, rather than a regard for history.

Some Israelis are up in arms because of a recent Israeli Supreme Court decision:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68684069

Seems that “ultra Orthodox” Jews are exempt from military conscription, while your average non-Orthodox Jew has to serve in the military at one point or another. Then adding insult to injury, the government provides a subsidy to the Ultra Orthodox Torah studies to boot. Apparently a majority of Israelis object to this setup, for obvious reasons. The Court instructed a funding freeze for ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, educational institutions whose students would otherwise be eligible for conscription.

The Haredi community comprises about 12% of the population but those in full-time Torah study are exempt from mandatory military service.

Sounds like the Gravy Train is over for these guys. Get a job, grab a weapon and proceed to the front lines like everybody else.

By the way, throwing chairs (not to mention TVs) out hotel  windows was common practice for rock stars when I was young. They even drove cars into swimming pools. Nobody ever got arrested for it for heaven's sake. The manager just showed up at the desk the next morning with a big wad of cash and paid for the damage and everything was quietly swept up. Those were the classic days of rock stars.  8)

I listed him in the Things 2023 will be remembered for thread.

Were they throwing them from high rise hotels? I can see if it was from a second floor, or if it was an uncrowded street. It is however illegal to drop a penny from the Empire State Building. Broadway in Nashville is busy with partygoers and the fact that it barely missed police officers is what probably made it worse.

Of course it was from high rise hotels. You think rock stars of the 70s stayed in little roadside motels?;D  For example, he Continental Hyatt House on Sunset in Los Angeles was nicknamed "the riot house" back then for the behavior of the musicians who stayed there, and is rumored to be the place "Hotel California" was written about. (Note: If you ever stay at a hotel actually called "Hotel California" it isn't the place. Guaranteed it was named that after the song was written).

I'm not exactly sure what the difference is  between the "performer" and the "musical excellence" categories, but oh well.

In the performer category, this year’s inductees are Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest.

Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield were selected as the recipients for the Musical Excellence Award.

Runaway horses gallop through central London, blazing a path of mayhem and injuries

Five military horses — including one seemingly covered in blood — got loose in central London early Wednesday, galloping through rush hour crowds, smashing into vehicles and injuring several people before being recaptured.

"A number of military working horses became loose during routine exercise this morning," a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence told NPR. "All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp."

Over roughly two hours, the horses wove a destructive path across some 6 miles of the city.

Bystanders and British news outlets flooded social media with footage of two saddled horses — one black and one white, with bright red liquid covering its chest and legs — hurtling through busy city streets.

Reports and photos emerged of horses smashing into vehicles, panicking commuters and knocking at least one person to the street.

A cab driver named Sean told BBC Radio London that he saw a parked Mercedes "with its side smashed in and covered in blood." The company Big Bus Tours said a horse had run into one of its parked double-decker buses. No one was injured, but photos show a massive crack in the bus' front window.

Eyewitness Bashir Aden told The Telegraph he saw a soldier fall to the ground, "screaming in pain," after one of the horses ran into a car.

"The horses come down this route every day, but today the horse looked stressed or panicked," he added. "I saw the horse run away after it hit a bus. People were screaming and running all over!".

Actor Steve Buscemi has been punched in one of those random attracts that go on in New York now.

He was treated for bruising, swelling, and bleeding in his left eye.

Steve Buscemi, the actor who previously starred in HBO's Boardwalk Empire, was punched in the face in a random attack in Manhattan last week.

As reported by The New York Times, the assault occurred on the morning of Wednesday, May 8, while the 66-year-old actor was out walking near the corner of Third Avenue and East 27th Street in the Kips Bay neighborhood of New York City. He was taken to a nearby hospital with bruising, swelling, and bleeding to his left eye.

"Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Midtown Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city," Buscemi's publicist said in a statement shared with the public on May 12. "He is OK and appreciates everyone's well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of New York."

The New York Police Department has confirmed there have been no arrests related to the attack, and investigations are continuing.

The attack on Buscemi follows a similar incident in April with his Boardwalk Empire co-star Michael Stuhlbarg, who was hit in the back of the neck with a rock while walking in Manhattan's Central Park. Stuhlbarg chased the assailant out of the park, where police apprehended him and later charged him with assault.

Thoughts on the whole Hunter Biden saga.

From what I have been able to read, Joe Biden III (i.e., Beau Biden) strikes me as having been a decent guy. It’s amazing that his family seems to use Beau’s death as an excuse/reason for all sorts of things.

-Joe Jr used it as an excuse to not run against Trump in 2016.  If he had run back then, he would have handily beaten Trump.

-Hunter blames Beau’s death for his descent into addiction, but he had been doing coke well before Beau died, and was thrown out of the Navy Reserves for cocaine well before Beau passed away.

-Hunter then went on to hook up with Beau’s widow and get her hooked on crack. Nice way to honor Beau’s memory. The dope, the hookers, the strippers… all ostensibly due to the loss of the dearly departed.

I see all of this as immensely disrespectful to Beau’s memory. If my family acted like this after my death, I’d climb out of my grave and beat some sense into them.

In the case of Hunter it’s your basic BS of an addict. I’ve had addicts who worked for me. All free time is spent either scoring dope or making excuses for scoring dope. Dope is the end-all, be-all. Addicts can evolve to be master manipulators to gain sympathy from people who care about them. But all the addict cares about is his next score. That’s it. That’s how you end up tapping your deceased brother’s widow and getting her tuned up on crack. It’s how you get some stripper preggo and then deny paternity. It’s how you buy a gun illegally but claim that “I was not an addict on that day”. It’s why you text your daughter and tell her you’re laying on the hood of your car, smoking the dope that you just scored from Mookie. It’s how you get thrown out of the Navy for coke, and blame it on a ciggie that you bummed from some South African guys you met on the street. Dope and sympathy…those are the goals of an addict.

None of it has anything to do with Beau Biden. It’s all about an addict trying to ”justify” abusive and destructive choices. That’s what addicts do.

Surgeon general calls for social media warning labels

www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/06/17/surgeon-general-social-media-warning-labels/

The Washington Post reports:

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy said Monday he will push a requirement for warning labels on social media platforms to combat a mental health emergency among children and teens.

In a New York Times opinion essay, Murthy said he will work with Congress to enact legislation requiring that social media platforms include a surgeon general’s warning to “regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe.” He cited evidence from tobacco studies showing that warning labels can change behavior.

Murthy cited a 2019 study that found the risk of depression and anxiety doubled among adolescents who spent more than three hours a day on social media, as well as statistics showing daily social media use among adolescents averaging 4.8 hours.

“Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food?” Murthy asked. “These harms are not a failure of willpower and parenting; they are the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability.”

Feminist activists here in Australia are warning about toxic male "influencer's" but themselves never offer anything to young men that would lessen that appeal -- just the same "we are not demonising men!" re Take Back the Night et al -- the same beligerant self-rightenousness that has failed to work in the five decades in the second wave.

As for other stuff I've seen elsewhere online like “men refuse to listen to women” which isn’t true, even if it *wasn’t* far too big a stroke by a paint brush made completely of straw -- was that boys and men's attitudes would have made much more progress over the last five decades since the second wave then they have if that claim was not an untruth.

Belligerent self-righteousness -- and being patronising and condescending and calling the average voter and person "bogan" etc. -- changes very few people's minds (see the Voice referendum) and they also seem to fail to comprehend that that most people think from emotion and not intellect -- see  https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2023-10-06/women-less-likely-to-receive-bystander-cpr-than-men/102937012 -- that's what happens if activists frighten non-intellectual elite boys and men with the prospect of a day in court or a cell. Also, as mentioned in this BBC Radio Four documentary -- https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001ypz3 -- many cis and hetero teenage boys in 2024 are now frightened to try and romance girls at all.

I don't think the women's liberation activists of the 1970s wanted any of this to happen.

In the end though, girls and women brought the above conquences upon themselves. Greed, heedless of caution, lures many to their downfall.

Justin Timberlake has been arrested for driving drunk in Long Island, NY.

TMZ reports:

Sources connected to law enforcement tell TMZ, Justin Timberlake, 43, was at the American Hotel partying and almost immediately after he left and began driving, we're told he blew a stop sign. Cops saw that and began to follow him. We're told Justin began swerving and cops pulled him over. Our sources say cops performed a field sobriety test and asked Justin to take a breathalyzer test, but he refused.

We're also told several of Justin's friends came on scene and tried to convince cops to cut him a break, but they refused. Justin was handcuffed and arrested, and we're told it's all on body cam. A rep for the Sag Harbor Police Department tells us the singer is currently in custody at their station ... as SHPD wouldn't disclose more information at this time. But TMZ has confirmed he was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

The 20-something cop who arrested 43 year old Justin Timberlake-who's fame is from an earlier era-unsurprisingly did not know who he was. So he would not have known "Cry Me A River". This isn't 2002.

Page Six reports:

We’re also told that the cop who pulled Timberlake over “was so young that he didn’t even know” who the 10-time Grammy winner was. “He didn’t recognize him or his name,” our insider says. A second source adds, “Justin said under his breath, ‘This is going to ruin the tour.’ The cop replied, ‘What tour?’ Justin said, ‘The world tour.'”

People Magazine reports:

The police officer who recently arrested Justin Timberlake for driving while intoxicated reportedly didn't know who the Grammy winner was — and the internet can't stop laughing.

Shortly after Timberlake, 43, was pulled over and arrested on Long Island, New York, after leaving The American Hotel in Sag Harbor on June 18, the New York Post's Page Six reported that the cop wasn't aware of his fame or occupation."The cop didn’t know who he was at first," a source reportedly told the outlet. "Justin said under his breath, ‘This is going to ruin the tour.’ The cop replied, ‘What tour?’ Justin said, ‘The world tour.'”The source quotes sent social media into a frenzy, with many users finding humor the *NSYNC member allegedly assuming officials would be aware of his ongoing 'Forget Tomorrow' World Tour.

"i already feel like 'this is going to ruin the tour. the world tour' is gonna enter my vocabulary for the next six months," wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/israel-s-army-must-start-drafting-ultra-orthodox-high-court-rules/ar-BB1oQFma?cvid=5efa7782ec3a4fbeb1e0e586bd80506e&ei=19

Israel has had a longstanding, but controversial, policy to excuse ultra-Orthodox youths from its broad-based national draft, which is mandatory for most Jewish citizens, as well as Druze minority men. Instead, ultra-Orthodox men, who call themselves Haredim, study holy texts in yeshivas. Religious women have a separate exemption from the military. About half of ultra-Orthodox men don’t work. They argue that they contribute to the state in their own way by preserving Jewish tradition and providing divine protection for Israel.

Looks like the gravy train has been derailed. Grab a rifle, boys…

Hunter Biden finally pled guilty to the various tax evasion charges against him. The judge in the case previously ruled that he could not bring up (a) the death of Beau Biden or (b) a car accident from 52 years ago as relevant to the case against him.  (Finally somebody said “enough!” to that nonsense, it’s gotten old and was thoroughly disrespectful to his deceased relatives, especially when he used it as an excuse for doing dope, evading taxes, and paying strippers and sex clubs.)

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/joe-biden/hunter-biden-intends-plead-guilty-federal-tax-charges-rcna169621

Earlier in the day Hunter was going to file an Alford plea but the prosecutors objected and the Judge said (words to the effect) “not so fast”.  Finally Hunter pled guilty to the whole kit and kaboodle.

My guess is that Democrat Party operatives severely pressured him to do some sort of plea, to make the whole thing go away. While the old man is no longer in the election, the stink of a trial and the lurid details would still not help the Dems in the upcoming election.

Beer can artwork accidentally thrown in bin by staff member at Dutch museum

www.theguardian.com/world/2024/oct/08/beer-can-artwork-lam-museum-thrown-out-all-the-good-times-we-spent-together

A Dutch museum has recovered an artwork that looks like two empty beer cans after a staff member accidentally threw it in the rubbish bin thinking it was trash. The work, entitled All The Good Times We Spent Together by French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears on first glance to be two discarded and dented beer tins. However, a closer look shows they are in fact meticulously hand-painted with acrylics and “required a lot of time and effort to create”, according to the museum.

But their artistic value was lost on a mechanic, who saw them displayed in a lift and chucked them in the bin. Froukje Budding, a spokesperson for the LAM museum in Lisse, western Netherlands, told AFP that artworks are often left in unusual places – hence the display in a lift. “We try to surprise the visitor all the time,” she said.

Curator Elisah van den Bergh returned from a short break and noticed that the cans had vanished. She recovered them from a bin bag just in the nick of time as they were about to be thrown out. “We have now put the work in a more traditional place on a plinth so it can rest after its adventure,” Budding said.

She stressed there were “no hard feelings” towards the mechanic, who had just started at the museum. “He was just doing his job,” she said.

Authorities in South Carolina on Thursday warned residents to lock their doors and windows after more than 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility.

The primates broke loose from a Alpha Genesis facility in Beaufort County and traps have been set up and thermal imaging cameras are being used in an effort to locate the fugitive monkeys, the Yemassee Police Department said in a statement.

In an update posted Thursday, police confirmed 43 rhesus macaque primates escaped and none had been captured as of early afternoon.  Authorities said the primates were "very young females weighing approximately 6-7 lbs" and had never been used for testing due to their age.

"Residents are strongly advised to keep doors and windows secured to prevent these animals from entering homes," police said earlier. "If you spot any of the escaped animals, please contact 911 immediately and refrain from approaching them."

All may be good in the Land of Oz, but the same can’t be said for the world of Mattel.

The toy company’s latest dolls for the movie “Wicked” listed a porn website on its packaging instead of a very similar URL that promotes an upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.

Mattel, the manufacturer of Barbie and Hot Wheels, said in a statement on Sunday that it was aware of a “misprint” on the box for the dolls, which are primarily sold in the United States. The company said it had intended to direct consumers to the movie’s landing page, not to a URL for a website restricted to people 18 years of age and older.

The doll is for children four and up.

Mattel expressed deep regret, blamed the mix-up on an “unfortunate error” and vowed to take “immediate action.” But the company did not say how the error had occurred or what action it planned to take.

It was not immediately clear early Monday how many of the mislabeled boxes had been distributed to stores. Mattel had not announced a recall or offered a refund to affected customers.

All may be good in the Land of Oz, but the same can’t be said for the world of Mattel.

Subject: Australia bans soxial media for those under 16

Written By: Voiceofthe70s on 11/28/24 at 11:19 am

The BBC reports:

Australia will ban children under 16 from using social media, after its Senate approved the world's strictest laws. The ban - which will not take effect for at least 12 months - could see tech companies fined up to A$50m ($32.5m; £25.7m) if they don't comply. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the legislation is needed to protect young people from the "harms" of social media, something many parent groups have echoed.

"This is a global problem and we want young Australians essentially to have a childhood," Albanese said when introducing the bill to the lower house last week. "We want parents to have peace of mind."

Typhoo Tea has been rescued by vape maker Supreme in a £10m deal which it said would keep the brand "in British hands".

The 120-year-old teamaker fell in to administration in November as its sales slumped and debts rose.

Manchester-based Supreme makes the e-cigarette brand 88Vape and distributes nicotine and home products to supermarkets.

Typhoo currently has fewer than 30 staff in the UK, mainly in sales and marketing, after much of its operations - both in the UK and abroad - have been outsourced over the years.
